I guess this means we'll sign a couple big name OL before the draft maybe??? We need a RG and RT at least. I don't want to even think about Bates and Brown starting again. What will it take for OBD to learn that you can't just throw a bunch of backup caliber OL out there and expect to win a SB?
Beane recently talked up Brown pretty strongly. Seemed like Brown was still in good standing. I know it's GM lying season but gave the impression that he really liked Brown. I agree with you though. They should bring in legitimate competition for RT.

Personally I think they’re replaceable players but they are quality young dependable starters in the league.
Beane will have to swallow his pride to let both go. Shows he made mistakes. I don’t think he will.I understand your point about Beane. He seemed stubborn to me regarding Cody Ford. Hopefully he will swallow that pride.

Because whether people like it or not, Oliver is a good player who makes a difference on this defense
Injuries heard him a lot last year and we better have a plan for replacing him
There are I believe 3 DTs ( Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, and Jeffery Simmons) who were drafted after Oliver who have better production and are better than Oliver. When players don't play to your expectations, you gotta move along and try to replace them with a better player. That being said, they'll probably let Oliver leave after 2023.

I just can’t see Beane letting both his 9th overall pick and 16th overall pick go. That would show a flaw in his front office.
Edmunds has shown more production to date than Oliver imo. They play different positions but neither is a difference maker. Why would you extend a first rounder who hasn't been a difference maker thus far? Extending them is a flaw imo.

I think if Edmunds is walking they will extend Oliver.
That's an interesting take. Beane has always talked up Edmunds when given the chance. I was thinking if they're willing to let Edmunds walk that they are likely to let Oliver walk next year. There's still some time to go but Rousseau may be next former 1st rounder to get extended by Bills.

He is a game changer. He changes games, like that Minny game. Just not the way that some people want to see them changed. Beane is subject to the salary cap. He has to give up guys he'd rather keep every year, going right back to Robert Woods.
You could very well be right about signing Von. We can totally agree there. Beane went outside his comfort zone there, consciously, knowing something else would have to give.
But again, we don't know Edmunds is gone yet. Might be. But we'll have to see.
True, Edmunds isn't gone yet. We'll see what happens. A pivotal off-season for the Bills. Need to get over the hump.

I'm not padding the stats. I'm just looking at everything that happened.
It's you who's actively ignoring the stuff you don't agree with.
Classic confirmation bias. Flawed thinking.
He absolutely is a game changer.
Again, with Edmunds in this year, we were #4 against the pass. With Edmunds out, #27.
Wanna see a game change? Look at our defensive performance against the Vikings. With Edmunds in in the first half, the defense was strong. With Edmunds out, the game totally turned and we were shredded.
That's what happens when you take a game changer out. Teh game changed. He's a terrific player.
Cam Lewis was actually OK in that game, with the exception of that one stupid play. And yeah, Allen had some bad turnovers in that game but that was the offense. The defense played great with Edmunds. And awful without him.
I guess we'll disagree on game changer. If he was a game changer, Beane would have extended him already is how I see it. The Bills signing Von Miller last year sealed Edmunds fate imo.

Sorry, man, that's just wrong
You're not looking at their playoff record. You're looking only at the three playoff games that best make your point. You're looking at a dataset of 40+ games and looking only at three and throwing out the rest, and thinking that makes a point. That's flawed thinking.
In fact, overall they've been a good playoff defense overall. Yes, three bad games. But again, looking only at those games says more about you and what you want to believe than it does about the defense.
More, the offense was much much worse than the defense was against the Bengals, and yet nobody blames them despite the fact that they were healthy and the defense was a shell of itself from the injuries.
If Von Miller and Da'Quan Jones had been healthy, if Hyde had played, and if Poyer weren't hobbling and if White was as good as he's likely to be next year, the defense would have been much much better.
And we'd still have lost because of how awful the offense played.
Edmunds is a good player but he's not a game changer. He's going to get paid by some dumb team a ridiculous amount of money. Good for Edmunds. As far as how valuable Edmunds is to the Bills, it's difficult to evaluate. The Bills really have no quality depth at LB so if Milano was out or Edmunds it really showed. The Vikings game did show Edmunds in a good way but Cam Lewis was terrible in that game too. Plus a couple of bad turnovers by Allen. Anyway, if Edmunds leaves it will hurt short term but it could turn into an overall positive IF Beane signs some quality players on offense and has a strong draft.

Losing both in the short term will hurt. The Edmunds haters will be happy but his loss will really impact the pass defense. Reload with rookies and possibly a FA player or two will transform this defense. No longer thinking Super Bowl this season. Daunting schedule will be trial by fire for the new guys. Long term this team will be set.
Short term it will hurt. I actually see this as an opportunity for Beane to re-tool the roster and make it better. Edmunds is good not great imo. If Edmunds does leave, which I believe is best for Bills, it offers some opportunity to sign an Oline guy, WR, and a stop gap LB. Draft a LB, WR, and OL.

Pretty big indictment on Tremaine.
Beane talks constantly about drafting and retaining. But they are going to let a 24 y/o first round pick team captain walk without giving him a second contract?
Edmunds is a good player but not a great player. Beane was hoping and hoping but even he has realized this now. Edmunds will get a big contract somewhere else. Curious to see how Beane approaches free agency. Will he try to sign released players in order to qualify for comp picks in next year's draft? Edmunds and Poyer should get pretty good contracts.

I think it was the ucl injury. Our O will be fine , injuries aside.
But I love this mentality from McD. He's evolving
I'm 50/50 on the offense. I think Allen's injury was more significant than we believed but also we need some upgrades at WR and OL to help Allen out. Too dependent on Allen last season.

I didn't take that as being the chronology but I will re-listen. I was doing other things at the time. But regardless even if it was a week in the making my point is I don't think this has been some snap decision.
I have the same suspicion as you. The decision was made awhile ago and was made public today. Beane was doing a lof GM speak today. Some truth to what he was saying but left out most of the story.

This decision was made a few weeks ago. They made it public today jmo

Losing good players who have been productive for you sucks, but paying an aging player who has an injury history big bucks past his prime sucks too. I think Beane has played this right so far. If Poyer truly wants market value, they need to move on. Draft a young safety and use some free agency money on oline.

It's a rather common thing, to learn how to fall in any defensive tactics course. If you are falling backwards, you learn to tuck your chin into your chest before hitting the ground. Your back hits the ground and absorbs the hit and not the back of your head. It's a good move on Tua's part. I've slipped on ice a couple of times and it's saved my ass. No doubt.

It’s impossible for cap reasons. Maybe if he takes pay cut.
Thank you! Per Spotrac, $45M dead cap hit if they were to get rid of him. His base salary is $7.9 M this year. Everything else Bills would have to eat in a trade. Diggs isn't going anywhere. Florio is an idiot.

Bills will keep Oliver because there are higher priorities to address imo. Poyer is likely gone so that's likely at least a draft pick needed. Also, even though they like Edmunds I think he's gonna get a huge offer somewhere else. So losing Edmunds is a huge hole to fill. Probably sign a veteran LB as a bridge and draft a LB early (first 3 rounds.) The remaining picks hopefully are used on OL, WR, and a late pick on RB.

Cheapest fa available
No more draft resources on the DL.
Brace yourself because I think Beane is going to draft a DL guy. Edmunds will walk and he'll use FA to address oline issues. Then draft a DE or DT on Day 2. They have too many guys with one year remaining - Oliver, Jones, Settle and Epenesa. Jordan Phillips and Shaq are free agents. Need to get better, younger, and cheaper guys.

Appreciate your insightfulness. Are they re-signing Phillips or someone else? Only 3 DTs under contract. They have to do something. They carry 4 on the 53.

Another premium pick on a rb? Seriously? How about OL or WR? They're really short on these positions.
