  1. [*]Great teams, even superbowl winners, over the course of a season, come away with one or two games that everyone agrees they didn't deserve....they win them ugly, by the skin of their teeth...and sometimes there's luck involved.

[*]Many teams we consider to be great, could have had games, seasons, playoff clinches and history changed drastically with a momentum destroying call that decided a game. A game that their fans would call ugly, their defense flopped, offense was flat....but they pulled it together and their QB stepped up or their D came up with a stop/turnover. One bad call...could equal a total 180.

OUR "great team" was most-definitely on the way to doing so driving with the lead. They played ugly but still found a way to be positioned for the win late in the game. That one play and subsequent horrific call took that away.

Yes we played ugly, the D was awful but I think fans have every reason to be pissed about the call. We were about to do "just enough" for the win....and if you don't think that "just enough" got many great teams through a game or two in a season, think again. This was our total stinker game that we were going to pull out by the skin of our teeth and go home 4-0.

I hope we do what's necessary to not put ourselves in that position for Philly.

  2. I live in the NYC area and rumor has it that Osi plays today at AZ. They were speculating it could be a showcase game for a pre-deadline trade. I believe,as many do on this board, that a big time pass rush may get us playoff-bound+++. Yes he's older and coming off knee surgery....but having watched a lot of giants games, he's a big play Machine .

You know where I'm going....would you? How much? Is he a 3-4 player?

    Etc.

  3. at a nickname...for the offense...not that there has to be one.

most points in the NFL, #3 in yardage...2 come from behind wins of 18+ points...playing at a level where they can score on anyone at anytime. I know we all know how we got these guys but, looking at it as a group, especially to an outsider....this is most impressive and has to be unprecedented.

I love how they wear it too! If there are to be nicknames at all....they deserve a nickname that relates all of this.

    Fitz - 7th rounder/cast-off from the Bungles

    Freddie - Undrafted D3

    Stevie - 7th rounder

    Nelson - Undrafted

Chandler - waived from practice squads 3x and cut before Bills

    Jones - Undrafted FA

    D. Bell - 7th rounder

    Pears - Undrafted FA

    Urbik - Claimed off Waivers

Chan - Fired as OC in the preseason from the team with the worst offense in the leage - out of pro football when hired.

    "The Undesirables" or "The Undesira-BILLS"

    "The Expendables" or "The Expenda-BILLS"

love it, flame it, hate it...it's all good....just having some fun and enjoying all of this. I was a hater/doubter for sure....apology to follow.

  4. It's the PS. Why not give some freaklishly large, athletic guy a chance? I think the odds are against the guy turning in to a true NFL player at any position. I also thought that when they drafted him. You take chances in the 7th round. You also have guys on your practice squad that are raw. This guy gets more press than any other 7th rounder we've drafted. He's not taking a roster spot and salary cap space. Why have such a strong opinion against the guy?

I just think they see what a great athlete the guy is for his size and they're giving him some time to develop. I don't think it's desperation on their part. By the time he would be ready the verdict will be out on Chan, good or bad.

I have no problem with Jasper whatsoever, I hoped and prayed he would be that load in the middle other teams will not dare try to run at. Jury is still out and I will continue to be a fan. He's young and raw and unique...so it's up to our coaching staff to make him a pro. I hope he becomes a 2-way wrecking ball...

My issue is this constant notion that is used to validate the things we do that would otherwise be considered "questionable" to put it lightly. This notion that Chan and Bud have this secret and genius plan and if you give it enough years, you'll see just what genius is....till then you cannot criticize.

The "desperation" comment I made was towards our OL depth....there's nothing genius about the way that has been addressed (or not)

Sorry just not a blue kool aid drinking happy horse sh-t 10-6 guy at the moment.

  5. Total and utter sign of OL desperation.....trying to see if there's ANY value they can squeeze out of him outside of practice squad. Come on with the hidden genius of Chix suggestions already....had that been the case, they would have put him with the OL at the start of camp.

  6. I think Billsguy said it best - 'we got 2 shots...just depends which way we point our gun!'

(Play well, score more points, don't let McKelvin field any returns, and we win - unless, of course, the refs say something like, "Just give it to them!")

Ohhhh man....."Just give it to them".....bad memories..

If I remember correctly, that wound up costing us the division after ANOTHER bad call the next week on a Testaverde keeper gave the Jets a win in Seattle. Instead we got a road wildcard playoff game in Miami ending with the Flutie whiff inside the 5. The Jets went to the conf title game. AmI right or am I combining seasons?

  7. I'll repost this in this thread, which is the real topic at hand.

In answer to K-9's good question of why would Nix stand for this, I stated...

This is just my speculation from what I know, have heard from very good sources, and have surmised,. I think that since Overdork handles all of the salary cap stuff and all contracts, he has power over Nix on some aspects of the typical GM job. Overdork has been here forever and he's Ralph's man (who happens to work from behind the curtain). We heard he has cut players before, like Troy Vincent and others, and has that power.

So if he thinks he can save 7 mil total this year and next by jettisoning Evans, he can do it and Nix doesn't have much say. But Nix is not going to jeopardize his job, or the organization by publicly announcing it. It's my belief that Nix and gailey were very likely told before they came on board that Overdork holds that power, and there may be times when they are powerless over personnel decisions. It won't happen all the time but it could happen. That may be why a bigger name was not hired, maybe they wouldn't work under those conditions but that is total conjecture. I have not heard that anyway. It seems possible.

I also believe that Gailey and Nix are both very qualified for their jobs but they likely weren't going to get this opportunity anywhere else but Buffalo. Nix very unlikely. Gailey probably not either. I think, rightfully, they thought to themselves can I live with this? And at their age, and what they want out of life and their work, they decided yes. Maybe if they were a little younger they could have taken a stand against it. Maybe if they had a little more power or opportunity they could have walked away.

All I know is if I were either of them, I would have very likely taken the job like they did, knowing it wasn't ideal. But better than not having a GM job or NFL Head Coach job at all, and never realizing your real dreams.

Again, that is just my reading on it. And I can't blame them. But it explains a lot.

It also explains why, perhaps, they didn't offer Clabo more. Overdork does the contracts. All of them. I can't honestly say that I know how other NFL teams operate behind the scenes but I doubt any one of them has a bean counter making these kinds of football and personnel decisions as opposed to a GM and talent evaluator who learned how to work the cap and negotiate contracts. Overdork never was a talent guy or football guy, he is a glorified accountant (GG says he's a lawyer, which I believe is true but to me he is acting as accountant not a lawyer). And he is making football decisions like getting rid of Lee Evans. It is no wonder we are where we are.

It's possible that Nix and Gailey can overcome this handicap. But it surely makes it much harder. And not all of the grumbling by guys like Fred Jackson can be put on them. Look for the Man Behind the Curtain.

    THIS!!!!

    THIS!!!!

    1000X THIS!!!!!

I'm so sad that this really rings truest to me of all explanations.

  8. heard a caller to NFL radio discuss his major concerns about Steven Jackson for St. Louis. In thier most recent game, he ran for 10 yards on 6 carriers. Ergo, the caller suggested, there was a major concern for SJ on the short yardage carrier in the upcoming season. if you only average 1.6 ypc in that pre-season game, what's going to happen when you need 3 on 3rd down in the regular season? the reply from ross tucker was basically this:

the guy's a beast, he's shown he can get it done, don't be alarmed about the results of a preseason game where he wasn't trying to impress coaches, make the team, or make a statement. however---if the caller was concerned about SJ's body beginning to show the wear and tear after 4 years of league-leading yards from scrimmage, well, at some point he'll begin to breakdown so that may be a valid concern. either way, the message was "time will tell".

i think that's a wise course of action. if you have a coach telling you "our plan was to play it the way we played regardless of the outcome", and an LB says they took a quick look at film---why go any further than that? obviously, they may well struggle in the regular season---time will tell.

Time will tell indeed. But you need to give me and everyone that is upset at least this much: in today's NFL, it is (and has been proven) possible to do a complete rebuild in under 3 years. We may be a special case because we have been completely dysfunctional for so long.....BUT....this regime went backwards to 4-12 last year and they do NOT deserve a pass for another 4-12. I say this ONLY because the OL was a glaring area of concern when they came in.....and, 2 drafts and FA periods later, it remains a glaring area of concern - now more than ever. There's little if anything to feel good about on the OL...when it comes specifically to the Tackles....they have no excuses. Outside of owner-interference for a "asses in the seats/jersey sales pick"...the explanation for the Spiller thing remains a mystery to many.

We can twist, turn and contort to try to explain away the bloody-awful pre-season perfomances BUT this They have that much more to prove this year.SOMETHING to get the fans excited. Otherwise this could be 1985 very soon.

to the long suffering fan, until we see a true fll-tilt commitment to winning...bitching will remian our only medicine. Better to vent anger/frustration here than out in the real world!!!

  9. Tebow - assuming a small price - would be worth it...

I can see where he is the type of QB that needs the right fit for a system. Chan's offense seems to be just that.

He's a very high character guy and a leader type - also what this FO is looking for.

all depends on the price but this may be our turn to play the Pats role in making lemonade out of other teams "lemons"

  10. Because the average poster has no idea what they're looking at, doesn't understand what "base" means and wants to participate in the "OMG WE SUCK" screaming contest.

Preseason games are for evaluating personnel. We have absolutely no idea what the coaches objectives are going into the game yet the fan base freaks when they don't see us absolutely dominating. I'm sure we could go out and waste time installing a full blown game plan but it's a pointless exercise.

Gailey & Wanny wanted to see if they could get pressure on the QB with just 3 lineman. If they can, it completely changes what they can do in the regular season. That process is called a self assessment. He also wanted to see if our five lineman were able to block in a base package without a lot of additional schemes.

Can we all just please relax and let the coaches do their job. If we don't win 8 games this season then you'll have something to B word about.

OMG we suck!!!! We're awful. Oh wait, it's base protection scheme testing time.....whew. Soundss about right.

  11. Yeah he looked so good against those NFL backups.....except when he didn't in his last game.

How would you feel if he was our guy and playing the same as he has?

I for one would be ecstatic....as I am sure others would.

Until the Pats stop doing it right....I'm going to credit them with doing it right.....the bastrds

  12. This feels like a Rob Johnson/Flutie-esque meddling Ralph move: "Why am I paying this high-priced supposedly-prolific player if a cheap aquisition can outplay him. Let's see what this guy can do."

All things being equal - Freddie deserves to start.

  13. Here's the source code for an app that simulates TBD the day after a bad preseason game: :)

10 PRINT "WE'RE DOOMED WE SUCK BAD PREP 0-16 OH NO WE'RE DONE NIX BLOWS GAILEY BLOWS 4TH ROUND O LINE D LINE SECONDARY FITZ HAS NO ARM SUCK SUCK [HEAD BASH SMILEY] SUCK 0-16"

    20 GOTO 10

    30 END

Give them time to play together in game situations for more than five minutes. They had no OTAs or any of the pre-pre-season work.

    GO BILLS!!!!!

10 - Fuk up first round draft choice

    20 - Draft CB

20.5 - GO TO 20 unless you see high motor smaller "speedy" project where you can project that player anywhere from DE to Safety.

30 - Do nothing in FA

40 - Pull players off other teams scrap heaps

50 - If by chance we are to groom a high cliber NFL player - do not offer them market value for their talent and hard work.

60 - Use the press to say "we tried to get this one and that one.....we tried to keep this one and that one....making the player look greedy for wanting what they deserve.

70 - Use the kind hearted and loyal fans on this page (knowing they support this team no matter what)to police bad sentiment....no matter how much the truth hurts.

80 - reap profits from the rest of the league's successes while keeping your cost base low and blaming your "small market" for your horrific mismanagement

90 - Anyone stop going to games? Threaten to move to LA.

    100 - Draft CB

  14. The OLine IS bad.

We know this. Chan knows this. The players know this. Buddy knows this.

Just like the Run Defense from last year, it will be addressed when possible. Might have to wait for the draft and next FA period though.

So we just accept no attempts at doing anything about the OL THIS year.....because this was the year of the Defense? It wasn't possible last year at draft time? This year at draft time? There's no more excuses to make my friend...this is not a front office that is committed to winning.

Football 101: you win the game in the trenches. No OL: no running game/no pass protection = dead QB....waterbug 9th pick 2010 cant run without holes.

the MOST pedestrian casual Bills fans knew the last 2 years that OL was of primary concern.

  15. This blue kool aid is running a little too deep

Good for Buddy raiding practice squads for OL men. Good for Buddy for making a bid for one guy in Atlanta and having no BACK UP PLAN at RT.....see! he tried! Good for Buddy for building through the draft and not addressing OL til they drafterd the Donger in round 5 last yr. You haters cry too much....I mean two pre-season games where we look like utter sh-t on offense on the back of a decade++ of futility and you're ready to throw in the towel. Pessimists!

You need to give them a few more years to draft more high round CB's, ignore FA, and to turn the organization around.....I mean we have 1 above average center and 2 average guards (Levitre overrated on this board)....thats HOT! We could go all the way to 7-9 with a few more drafts and some breaks.

Let the system grow roots dammit....waterbug RB's take time .....maybe we could put weight on ours and make him a Safety! Not to worry we have roscoe - lets trade him for 7 number 1's and nothing less. Lee was a bum anyway....we got a 4!

Yeah! Eagles....Pats.....Steelers....PFFFFF Buddy has em all riiiiiiight where he wants em. He's got a plan......and dammit its working......just give him a few more years to really finish it up.

Some of you guys have to be kidding me with the way you react to fans calling a bad team - a bad team....a bad draft pick - a bust.....and your calling a lifeless pursuit of trash bag players - a true effort at rebuilding. You can address the defense and the offense in the same offseason - just so you Buddy apologists know. I have never seen a team come out and say.....this year - Defense....NEXT year....look out....were revamping the O baby. Nor will any of us ever....but theres some on this board that explain away the non moves as if that's something that happens! WE CANT FIELD A REMOTELY COMPETITIVE OFFENSIVE LINE - WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fitz - my deepest sympathies for the absolute beating you're about to take this year.

  16. Just for fun, let's weigh in on who you would have taken at each pick knowing who was off the board. So for each pick you can take anybody from the player we picked through our next pick. I really like Buddy's draft, so I am not up in arms complaining. As Cannon and Mallett sit on the New England bench for different reasons, I think we will like our actual draft better than mine. But now is the time to state who you wanted at each pick for the historical record :) (For example, I wanted Ngata over Whitner, but I wanted Lynch over Revis and would have wasted a 2nd on Claussen).

R1 #3 (Dareus DT) My pick: SAME

R2 #34 (Williams CB) My Pick: Akeem Ayers LB

R3 #68 (Sheppard LB) My Pick: Ryan Mallett QB

R4 #100 (Searcy DB) My Pick: Luke Stocker TE

R4 #122 (Hairston OT) My Pick: House Daven DB

R5 #133 (J. White RB) My Pick: Marcus Cannon OT

R6 #169 (C. White LB) My Pick: Quan Sturdivant LB

R7 #206 (Rogers DB) My Pick: SAME (what do I know in the 7th)

R7 #245 (Jasper DT) My Pick: SAME (what do I know in the 7th)

This would have been amazing. Hindsight always 20/20....Ayers looks like a player.

  17. -Any card carrying Bills fan has the right to be negative after the horriffic streak of bad drafts, coaches, GM's and ownership decisions since the glory days.

-This is EXACTLY the place for them to vent/discuss their viewpoints regardless if anyone else deems it unworthy.

-They have the right to read only if thats what they choose or post as much as they want. How exactly would that make their opinion worse than someone with 2000 posts?

-I havent seen a single thread pre-draft that came close to alluding to our needing to use this draft to overhaul the D-Backfield. All the talk was front 7. Now its genius and those that do not think so are dim-wits??

-Most (if not all) of the threads and mocks included players from everyones agreed upon areas of needs(DB's way down on that list if not the bottom) ....and we had a chance to get several of them. We did not.

-In the eyes of the long suffering fan: drafting DB's in the early rounds, opting not to choose the consensus best at a position for the "sleeper" that was further down on the rankings, passing on certain players we all have a feeling are going to be studs one day...for DB's...Looks and smells like same ol' same ol'

-This regime has so far underwhelmed with last years draft where they spent the #9 pick on the position of least need.

-I don't know of any fan base that rally's around a 4 year plan happily when all the short-term signs point to the same garbage they have lived with all along.

Yet there are those that will continue to jam the square peg of this draft (rd 2-7) into the round hole of blind optimism and chastise those who just can't see it that way. Every move is brilliant and just what we wanted to do/needed. The scientists in the FO are at work and us lowly fans that do not agree with their decisions do not have enough knowledge and should be cleansed from this pristine environment of blowing positive smoke up each others a$$es. Suddenly this franchise that goes after mediocre and cheap free agents are going to get Boss or Z. Miller....or Claybo at RT. Oh yeah, simple and turnkey....get Boss....fill need. Thats the Bills. lol.

I get it....there is a long term plan and a bigger picture but until that takes shape in a more defined way, the majority of Bills fans have EVERY RIGHT to remain unconvinced. Til then, a 4-12 team with the worst run D in the league, a questionnable OL that nearly got their QB killed, a need at TE and a need for a QB of the future opted not to draft the best help possible (aside from Dareus).

It's the team's job to change the minds of the fans guys. Til then, those that remain unconvinced should be free to express whatever they wish. Congrats to the optimists...I hope you're right. I really do.

  18. I love it! What are the Bills doing with #3? QB? DL? Trade down? Why is a guaranteed mid 1st rounder like Kerrigan visiting? Why Peterson?

IF a QB comes off the board #1 or #2, the Bills are going to see some desperado GM's looking to cough up a big chunk of draft picks to get the #3 spot as Cincy needs a QB at #4.

The Bills are doing a great job of not telegraphing. Nobody knows for sure what theyre going to do....I really think theyre doing due diligence on all possibilities.

Gives me a shred of hope for a trade down and a gutting of the team looking to get up to #3.

Fairley is the only guy I want at 3.
