  1. I should have clarified on coaches making poor decisions: there are moments in a game that a coach can do the right thing or make the wrong choice. The call to roll Losman out and have him throw a pass to the FB is a catastrophically bad decision that affected the outcome of a game. Deciding to go for it on 4th and 1 in the second quarter and fail isn't as huge a thing. DJ tends to screw up at the worst possible moment and we've seen it through three seasons. I can list no less than 5 games in the past 2 seasons he's made catastrophically bad decisisons that determined the game. I personally don't think he's more than a coordinator if it weren't for Buffalo.

Agree with you here about mistakes...as I said, I am not a DJ supporter and prefer he be replaced, but I don't feel he is our worst problem.

I'm not demanding a firing of the HC without the coordinators. I didn't say you said that. If DJ goes, all of them should go. But again, we're talking about a team that's been in rebuild mode for three seasons. If DJ had as much personnel control as I think he did, it's amazing he doesn't bear more responsibility for such a thin team. And he's proven he can't find reliable coordinators, neither here nor Chicago. He can't coach, and he doesn't know talent. Those are fatal flaws for a HC.

He doesnt have as much personnel control as you think he does.

Second, there's no way I can confirm or deny your sources. However, there are some very knowledgeable fans on this board who see more than what a casual fan does. I've been to 14 of the last 15 home games, and while that doesn't make me an expert, I've been able to deduce what kind of coach DJ is. He'll generally make the safe pick, but not all the time. Occasionally he gets a wild streak and goes for it. But if one bad thing happens, he goes into his shell.

For the record, Edwards' durability is my only major concern with him. The coaching he receives is another matter. Watching him after the Cleveland game and throwing 3 picks, I wondered who would get him going. He doesn't have a mentor on that team to work with him. Van Pelt and Schonert are former QB's, but they're not preparing him adequately. To have no answer for 3-4 defenses so many times is appalling. But we're talking about a guy with little more than a season's worth of starts. I'll give him more time.

You have to be kidding here. Trents only problem is durability? How about his clear inability to find open recievers, or his tendency to hold the ball too long, or his not protecting the ball, or the clear fact that he really regressed as soon as he hit a little rough patch and showed no signs of working his way through it?

I mean, once he struggled, he played the QB position like a dear in head lights. Very hesitant, read defenses poorly, missed wide open recievers just to check it down, often throwing passes behind or near the line of scrimmage. He has shown nothing to indicate that he can make it in this league, and don't bring up his 4th quarter comebacks against the worst pass defenses in the NFL. We had to come back because he did squat in the first 3 quarters. And in three of those comebacks, our D (Mitchells pick in one and Greer Int in another for a TD) and our ST bailed us for the most part to turn the game around in the 4th. Trent's best game this season would be an average game at best for a top QB in this league. You can even argue the last half of the year was as bad as anything JP or Rob Johnson have put up.

  2. And for the record, I can't stand Turk...do not confuse my understanding as to why we kept Turk as support for Turk.

DJ is really on a one year deal...produce a winning season or he is gone. So, you let DJ keep his coordinators this year and if they dont produce then you fire DJ and let the new HC bring in their own coordinators. If you fire the coordinators now, and end up firing the HC next year too who brings in their own coordinators, then you have your young QB learning 3 systems in 3 years, which is not the recipe for developing your QB.

  3. When coaches make bad decisions on gameday, they lose. Whether it's playcalling (at NYJ) or which players to start (an injured McGee over a healthy McKelvin) or which players to draft (Whitner over Ngata), it's clear DJ isn't good enough in all phases of the game. I'm not sure who your sources are, but if DJ was a good HC, he would have proven it by now. He's hired four OC's in his 8 seasons as a HC. Three of them are in the college ranks and won't return anytime soon. Neither of his two DC hires were/are very special. No rational NFL "insider" would say DJ is anything more than a guy lucky to be working for a minor league NFL team.

But I'm still confused. You'd rather see DJ fired, but want to keep the same coordinators for the sake of continuity. That's a non-sequitur, and goes against your original post.

DJ is a bad coach, and I'd wager that there are few in league circles who agree DJ is even below average.

    1. When coaches make bad decisions, they do NOT always lose...see Mike Tomlin, Tom Coughlin, John Fox, Andy Reid and just about every other NFL coach. Great teams and players can over come coaching mistakes. That is about as irrational statement as you can make.

    2. First off, on DJ, I am not a general supporter of him. I only posted that he is still thought of as a good coach in several NFL circles. However, I firmly believe that with the POOR, let me say this again, POOR overall QB quality we have had that our last few seasons wouldnt have been much different regardless of our coach. Add in the lack of depth killing us because we have been decimated by injuries, and you have a recipe for marginal seasons.

    3. The GM, or lack of true GM, is this teams biggest need in terms of staff. We need a true GM who knows football talent to maximize our drafts and FA pickups. This falls on Ralphs lap, not DJ's.

    4. I never once said keep the coordinators and fire DJ, not once...I swear its like you read 4 words of a post and make up the rest. The original topic of this post was WHY did we keep our coordinators. I said its because if you are going to keep DJ this upcoming season, you have to keep the coordinators for continuity, especially since DJ WILL be fired if he doesnt have a winning season this year and who ever we bring in to replace him will bring their own coordinators. You don't switch the offense on a young QB this again, then do it again next year too (see JP Losman).

    5. I am sure there are circles in the NFL that have various oppinnions on DJ, but I am telling you that there is also support for him and he still often viewed as a good coach who gets a lot our of his players.

At some point, fans of this board are going to have to realize that we don't have enough talent or depth to be much better than we are, especially when injuries hit. And we will NEVER be able to consistently win and be a SB contender until we improve at the QB spot because no other area of our team is dominant enough to make up for the defeciencies at the QB position we have.

  4. SKOOBY is his source.

lol, nope he's not my source...I have several friends at various levels of the NFL, some still playing, some coaching, some in the front office type capacity, etc. from my days of college ball while starting 4 years for a top ranked Pac 10 team.

Honestly, I don't really care if anyone on this board believes he is still viewed in NFL circles as a good coach, especially since most on here are often irrational and incapable of seperating the butt hurt emotion from logically looking at any given situation with the Bills. Truth is, it's a fact...he still is thought of as a good coach in NFL circles, and that fact has even been mentioned in the media since he was retained.

  5. I think we can get the TE and C we want by trading with Detroit. They need a QB and a top OT. They move to 11 for the 20 from Dallas and the 33 that they own. We then trade back into the first round to pick in the early 20's giving us two picks in the first round. We can get Mack and the TE of our choice.

I dont see this happening with Detroit...they have too many needs and need all the picks they can get. I just dont see them giving up a pick as important as the 1st pick in round 2 just move up 9 spots in the first from their 2nd first round selecton at pick 20.

Det is in a position to make huge strides if they maximize these picks this year, just dont see them giving any of them up for that type of move.

  6. Buffalo will select either Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford in 2010.

With all the talent coming back, including Mays of USC and Gresham and Pryor of Ohio, Buffalo will probably end up selecting a quarterback.

Edwards only has one year left to prove his worth as a starter. If by week #10 Buffalo is already under 500, start watching Bradford and McCoy more closely.

About as dumb of a prediction as I have seen...and I am not referring to taking a QB, but your apparent claim as to we will have the worst record in the NFL to get the first overall pick.

Man, butt hurt fans will post the dumbest things...

  7. I'm not sure how long you've been following this team. Because in football, teams with the best talent evaluators generally win. Usually those talent evaluators are GM's, or directors of pro personnel or amateur scouting. Ralph spends money on players because he has to according to the CBA. On coaches and talent evaluators, RW spends near the bottom. He has no GM, which is ironically the same setup the Bengals have. And it's clear RW makes decisions on really important things, like coach. That's the same method that Jerry Jones and Al Davis utilize.

The point to all of this is simple. And your football background cannot be deep, or else you would know this. Teams with great talent evaluators win, and teams without them and have owners making football decisions usually don't.

And for the record, there aren't many cheaper coaches than DJ.

Hold on, I said nothing about the GM spot, only as to why we kept our coordinators. I have a pretty extensive football background and have also been a Bills fan for more than 20 years. I have said on numerous posts on here that we need a GM big time, and that it is our biggest need, not a new HC.

Ralph is gunshy and bitter still about the GM position, and because of that he is gun shy, which is a big problem in my eyes. I actually dont think it has to do with money to pay the GM, I think he just is gun shy based on the sour taste in his mouth. Either way, it's still holding the team back and this is the one area that falls solely on Ralph Wilson.

For the record, DJ was MARVS guy and brought him in because Marv wanted him. Also, I have several ties to the inner circles to the NFL from my football background, and believe it or not, DJ is still considered to be a good HC and feel the job he did in 07 with all our injuries was one of the better coaching jobs in the league that year. He also already has one Coach of the Year award and has done his best coaching with just moderte talent on his teams.

Now, I think he made plenty of mistakes this year, and when you dont have the talent to over come them they stand out. Mike Tomlin made just as many bone head blunders, but because the talent on his team overcomes them, they get brushed aside or go unnoticed by most. Winning masks mistakes, and losing highlights them.

DJ isn't as bad as Bills fans want to make him out to be. Me personally, I would prefer to make a change as I think this team needs more intensity and fire, one area DJ severely lacks. But, the lack of a true football mind as a GM is hurting us way more than DJ. This is proven the last 2 years as injuries have been something we have not been able to recover from as a lack of depth. Plus the contracts given to Kelsay and Denney would not have happened if we had a true GM in place, at least thats how I feel about it.

  8. Good article in the Buffalo News about the Steelers being almost completely healthy and the Ravens dealing with plenty of injuries. Same deal with ARI/PHILLY, as Arizona only has 3 guys on the injury list and Philly has 8 or 9.

If injuries mean anything, the picks seem obvious. But as we all know, nothing is ever as easy as it sounds. Should be some good games...

Yeah Balt has been bitten by the injury bug, although I don't recall anyone of any real significance being out this week. Like I said, I would go AZ and Pitt right now and probably will end up betting them come game time as I don't really see much changing my mind. That being said though, I am not as confident as I was last week.

To me, Philly, AZ, Balt and Pitt were picks I had a lot of confidence in last week, and logic would say have the same confidence in Pitt this week, but for some reason I just don't. I am not a fan of how Tomlin manages the game and he makes key mistakes at critical times that have cost him wins and almost cost him wins in other close games. So, I just dont trust him in a close game and with these 2 defenses I just think either team puts a lot of points on the board.

  9. With Bradford out, USC QB Mark Sanchez is set to cash in. Literally.

And seeing how he thrashed the Nittany Lions with his 28 for 35 passing, piling up 413 yards and 4 TDs with zero picks, he's a first rounder for sure.

The Combine is going to be exciting as Sanchez and Stafford battle for top QB honors, and the likely right to go number one overall.

I think he ends up being the 2nd QB taken and will be there at #11...do you think the FO throws a curve ball and considers him, especially if he has a strong combine? I don't think its likely, but I also thought Ngata was a lock for us to take that year when they took Whitner.

  10. Pretty good. Have you made your picks for this weekend?

Not yet, leaning toward AZ at this time though as I have concerns with Westbrooks injury possibly limiting his mobility even though he is going to play.

Honestly, the Pitt v Balt game to me is the toughest game I have had to pick this year. I am pretty sure I am going to go with Pitt, but I just have this feeling that an upset by Balt is in the making. The Balt D has been very oppotunistic to this point, Ben I think is going to struggle, and I dont see Willie Parker bailing them out against this Ravens D. On the flip side, I dont have much confidence in Balt making plays on the offensive side of the ball either against Pitts smothering D. All in all though, I think the experience of Pitt probably carries them through and they win.

Last weekend I bet all the games individually and played a parlay and a teaser and won them all...so it was a good weekend...lol...but this week is a lot tougher...

So, if I was to bet right now, I would go AZ and Pitt, but I won't make my final decision until this weekend.

  11. Ralph Wilson, for the past three seasons, has been in the business of buying time. He named Levy GM to get the fans back after Donahoe. DJ was hired, along with the lackluster coordinators, one of whom is now gone, because the HC had experience.

When Wilson elected to keep DJ and not mandate changes in the coaching structure, he gave his stamp of approval for mediocrity.

I whole heartedly disagree with this statement. Ralph has shown a clear distaste for losing, has spent a lot of money the last 3 years on players and clearly WANTS to win.

His decision to keep DJ is not a signal he approves mediocrity, and it's quite an outlandish statement. I guarantee you this staff will be fired if we fail to have a winning season next year. If it was about money, he wouldnt have given the extension to DJ when he could get a cheaper HC by hiring a up and coming coordinator this offseason.

  12. Off the top of my head I can't think of one person who thought the Cardinals would win. I wonder how this will affect LV's bottom line?

I know Vegas tries to put the spread so both teams will be bet equally but I still see the higher payouts for betting on Arizona hurting them.

Um, I was 4-0 in the games last weekend with and without the point spreads and posted it on here before the weekend games even began...

  13. Coming from a football background, continuity is way bigger than the casual fans give it credit for. Switching a philosophy requires a learning curve and more often than not, it takes more than a season to adjust.

Most importantly though, continuity is even bigger when dealing with a young QB. I think the FO realizes how bad they handled JP and fear switching offensive philosophy is going to cause Trent to regress further. Young QB's need time to develop in the same system...doesn't mean they cant grow in a new one, but it's not an easy feat and more often than not that young QB will struggle.

I really believe this is the staffs last year to get something more from this team...anything less than a 9-7 record next year will certainly bring in change to the HC, OC, and DC. I think Ralph sees the incredible coaching pool available next year and this staff will be on a very short leash.

  14. If we address our backup QB via FA and draft a stud DE (Orapko, Brown, etc) at #11, where do we address our needs at C and TE. I think everyone, maybe even DJ, would agree Royal and Preston will not be starting next season. Preston i like as a back up for his versatility and Royal might want to look into arena football, oh wait there cancelled, maybe he can go to the United Indoor football league and play for Freddie's old team!!

As for TE it looks like there are Coffman, Pettigrew, and Beckum as the best candidates and at least 1 or 2 would be available in rd 2. At C the top 3 are Mack, Unger, and Luigs, possible all 3 could be there in rd 2.

In FA at TE, the only decent TE is Owen Daniels who i'd love to get here but he;s and RFA which might be tricky i don't know what we'd have to give up. At C there is Matt Birk, Jason Brown, Jeff Satruday, and Brad Meester; Brown is the only one under 30 and i heard he's going to resign.

So what is the answer? If I had my choice I'd sign Matt Birk to a 2 year deal and do whatever it takes to trade for Danielsor Winslow, though i would not give up a #1.

Any thoughts? Also is there any precedent on whether a rookie TE or rookie C would be more apt to succeed right away?

The thing I fear is that the FO doesnt view a Tight End as big of a need as we do...I keep hearing how high they are on D. Fine, who I think showed some promise, but they didnt put him on the field enough to get a clear answer.

My personal opinnion is that we address LB and a WR in FA and then draft a DE in the 1st. Tough call on the 2nd Rd though. If they decide we need TE help, they may look at Coffman (some mocks have him maybe going in the 3rd, but come draft time I dont see him as any lower than a mid or high 2nd Rd pick, especially with Gresham returning) or center. I think the Center they target is Unger if they do.

However, if Pettigrew starts to fall to bottom of 1st Rd (I doubt it with Gresham returning) they may try and move up to get him because I suspect a big combine for him, and we all know the FO has been aggressive moving back into the bottom half of the 1st when a guy they want is still there.

Most likely scenario though in my eyes is DE in 1st and Unger in the 2nd.

  15. impossible to call a bust after 1 year eh? o.k. Ryan Leaf 2nd overall selection 1998 draft, bust. 2002 WR Charles Rodgers 2nd overall pick bust, 2004 WR Reggie Williams Jacksonville Jaguars bust, 2005 QB Alex Smith Bust, 2005 Mike Williams bust, all became busts after 1st two seasons.

Drew Brees stunk for his first 2 seasons...so bad they traded for and drafted Phillip Rivers. I could actually list a ton of players who contributed very little, or even stunk the field up in at least their first season or two that blossomed into stud players. Heck, Jimmy Smith was dumped by Dallas before he went on to be one of the best WR's of this generation in Jax.

All of your posts in this thread make me simply go >>>> and then go >>>> :wallbash: followed by >>>> and then finally to >>>>>> :sick

  16. Now that the season is over, who do you think is the Gem of the 2008 Draft, we didn't see much of Demitrious Butler, Chris Ellis was put on IR, James Hardy put on IR, Steve Johnson came around late, Alvin Bowen was put on IR, in training camp. Derek Fine was a stud, Leodis McKelvin was a great returner, and Xavier Omon didn't do much.

Gem of the 2008 draft: Reggie Corner

Stud of 2008 draft: Derek Fine

Showed Potential from 2008 Draft: Leodis McKelvin, and Steve Johnson

Busts of 2008 draft: James Hardy, Chris Ellis

I don't wanna say James Hardy to be a bust, because we didn't use him for what we drafted him to be. A red zone threat, but he did let a lot of balls go by him, and he dropped several easy passes, got a lot of work to do in 09. Chris Ellis i didn't see much out of him.

I cant even dignify this gibberish with a real response... :wallbash:

  17. You can't argue with this list overall!

You rebuild the offense/Defensive lines and this team wins 3-4 more games next year. I should be the G.M. I would need (2) more drafts and F/A to get the bills on track! RF.

Not a fan of your draft at all

  18. Hey Ray,

The Bills can trade down and aquire more lack round picks.

I love how fans think when a team wants to trade down that they just simply trade down. Its not easy to trade down...

One, you need a team who wants a player bad enough that they don't feel will be there when they pick and is available at our pick.

Two, they have to be willing to compensate appropriately.

Three, the team we trade down with has to be in a draft slot where we feel comfortable grabbing another player we have graded really high and really want.

Four, teams have to be willing trading partners (some teams just don't like dealing with each other).

Its really not easy to trade down, but posters on this board jump all over the FO when they dont trade down without ever having any knowledge if we tried to or not.

  19. so all it will take is a good draft and we are playoff bound? gimme a friggin break. our bonehead front office could screw up a wet dream. lets just say this senario happens we get all three, frick, we get Orakpo,Mack and Coffman, one of these guys will be a bust and the other two will take time to develop into the players they were in COLLEGE( you know that place where not everyone you play is pro caliber?) Instead, every year, from late december till mid July there is BS sense of optimism that some how, this front office, regardless of year after year after year of stupid decisions, poor drafting, completly flabergasting Free agent moves and a "piss down your back and tell you its rainning" media spin from Chris Brown, belief that some how, some way, this year is different.

Do yourselves a favor, cancel your season tickets(I did, anyone want 2 seats in the Van Miller club can PM me) get a frickin hobby that doesnt involve speculating about a pack of carreer losers and check back in with these losers sometime in the 1st week of september if you are interested in a rerun of the past 10 myear.

I want to puke. sorry for my rant.

I love how you give up season tickets, say this team makes you vomit, yet you have so little else going on in your life that you waste time telling people about it on a message board dedicated to the very team you say makes you sick. And you call the Bills a bunch of losers...

  20. Jordan Gross is a Pro Bowl LT. Could we make a run at him this offseason and then trade Peters? Yes we would have to pay him top tier money, but atleast he would come in here with a right attitude if we signed him as a FA. Peters is possibly going to be disgruntled until he gets what he feels he deserves. On the other hand, if we did try to accomplish this and it didn't work then Peters would surely be a cancer. If this did go according to plan, we could have a premier LT and extra draft picks (maybe a 1st and 2nd or 1st and 3rd, something along those lines) to help build our team. Just a thought. I know there's going to be the typical "you're stupid if you want to trade Peters away" posts  . But if we got Gross in return, there really wouldn't be a drop-off in our LT level of performance. All of this is relative to whether Carolina franchises him again or throws big money his way of course. I think this would be a good move if it could be pulled off. We are the Buffalo Bills though, so I don't know if stuff like this happens around here anymore. For all of you who are about to say it's "stupid" :D , actually think about what could be done with the extra draft picks.

There is a very long list of teams already said to have Gross HIGH on their priority list. And, Buffalo by the way hasn't been on any of those lists that I have seen. He isn't coming to Buffalo...

Good idea, just not going to be a reality.

  21. If we're just looking for a decent vet to give Trent another option, I would take a look at Gaffney. He is a decent WR, knows how to get open and would weaken a divisional opponent. An offense that features Lynch/Jackson at RB, Evans/Gaffney/Reed/Johnson/Parrish/Hardy at WR and a big upgrade at TE with Fine as a backup would seem to have the requisite weapons to be successful.

Gaffney said his first option is NE by far and that he wanted to be in NE before he even got to NE and that he definitely wants to stay.

Austin is the best choice on this list in terms of potential, youth and price. TJ would be ideal, but I just dont see him coming here.

  22. "I think he's converted to Judaism purely for the jokes!"

"And that offends you as a Jewish person?"

"No, it offends me as a comedian."

Not a Bills joke, but golden oldie...

What did Lorena Bobbit say to her husband after the trial?

    ...

    ...

    ...

    "No hard feelings"

    Lol
