  1. Wait... the event was free, right?
  2. He must live in Winston-Salem, home of the Journal, which still has 20 people on the copy desk (before the consolidation with Richmond and Tampa), yet literally no presence in the state capital.
  3. Don't mean to get all PPP here, but tax incentives aren't always the best tool in economic development. Just saying. The city is kick-ass awesome in a brutally depressing way. Like the '90s.
  4. Tough job. I feel awful for the umpire.
  5. The longstanding formula is half his age, plus seven years is the youngest a guy should go. So no, she's too young.
  6. Haha, who voted for "excellent job turning this franchise around"? Lordy, lordy.
  7. That is surprising to hear, although I'm sure there's some kind of new-fangled science behind the idea, so I'll give professional trainers the benefit of the doubt. That being said, I'm glad to hear they're doing those kind of core strength training techniques again.
  8. Weird. I was under the impression you didn't sway far from Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Jean-Baptiste Lully.
  9. A cover band plays renditions of multiple bands' -- usually popular -- songs. A tribute band plays renditions of one specific bands' songs. No?
  10. Ugh. Amen. And not only with the team brass and media, but the fans, too.
  11. I think it's fine to unscrew it a little bit. We have a 40-45-pound painting that sits in the middle of a wall in our living room (no studs to hang on) and used two of the similar plastic bolts to hang it. No problems. Although, obviously, the painting was strung, and didn't have built-in hanging holes.
  12. Who in the world has ever said that?
  13. Ah, nice.
  14. OK, a kid on the team you're covering for your newspaper misses two free-throws with 1 second left that could have won the state championship. Instead of winning the title, they lose by one. Please, please tell me you're printing the kid's name.
  15. Thank you for this. Thank you.
  16. Like you, I probably wouldn't have done it unless charges were made. If he were charged, his name would have definitely been in, no doubt about it. What would you do?
  17. Maybe not, but it certainly exposes the lengths to which some people will go shift blame/point fingers/keep something out of the paper, regardless of whether or not it's true. You know this.
  18. He is also the star quarterback for the football team, and dozens, if not hundreds, of people were at the game. Everybody knows he's the kid who did it. The stigma is there regardless of whether or not the newspaper prints his name. If you haven't already, please read the editor's justification -- the link is in Lori's post.
