Travis Beckum - TE Solution

Travis Beckum could be the solution to our TE dilemma. This guy has got everything we are looking for and since he missed most of his senior season should slip to the 3rd or 4th round. He could be an immediate starter. Plus this will allow us to address our DE and OL/LB needs with our 1st two picks. FYI - made known of this person from a big-time nfl insider - can't disclose source.

I understand that he has great production and speed. But using the word "everything" is a stretch. Remember, he is a Tight End, so a big part of Tight End duties is blocking. We run and pass 50/50. If you read up on him, he is 235 lbs, which is very small for a TE and he has very little experience blocking lined up next to the tackle. He was used more split out.

He would be at best in his first year with us, as a situational TE. He would most likely not be used in our base formation because he would be a liability as a blocker.

Analysis

Strengths: Rangy athlete with the top-end speed to challenge down the seam. Uses this threat and his long arms to gain separation from defenders. Lines up as an H-back with his hand down, in the slot and outside. Good lateral quickness. Shimmies to sell his route or get off press coverage at the line. Improved recognition of defenses and can recognize the soft spots in the zone. Nice body control as a receiver, flashing the ability to track over his shoulder. Able to make the acrobatic high-point catch. Secures the ball quickly and looks to head upfield. Flashes some wiggle to make defenders miss. Impressive straight-line speed. Provides an initial pop and willingness to sustain as a pass and run blocker.

Weaknesses: 'Tweener who is undersized for the traditional tight end position. Has struggled to gain weight in the past and is a narrow shouldered athlete who lacks the frame to add much bulk. Ultimately gets backed down or ripped off by larger players when blocking on the line due to his less than ideal playing strength. Does not have the straight-line speed and explosive burst out of his breaks to convert to receiver. Lacks the raw power to break tackles. Rounds off routes. Will short-arm passes when hearing footsteps. Body-catches too often. Underwent shoulder surgery after his junior season and his left leg must check out medically.

We have two talented, mobile, small tight ends. They arent world beaters, but schouman and fine have done what you would expect of them. We dont use them as tight slot receivers in versatile formations as it is, and they dont catch many passes, so why dont we have a tight end that can block?

A multifaceted fullback would be perfect for this team. Our two running back sets were very effective, especially because freddy jackson is a receiving threat and edwards is a good short passer.

Kliensasser is a free agent. He is a physical specimen and will be cheap.

He could be had in the 3rd round because of the terrible year he had. People who want Scheffler should want Beckum, as hes a guy who can beat defenses between the seams of the zone. Travis will catch a ton of passes in the NFL because he is a physical specimen AND a good player (unlike a few TE's in this draft)

Fullbacks are generally a waste as they don't really pose a threat to defenses, thus you don't have to assign a dedicated player to cover them (both in the run and the pass). They are good for opening up holes, but you are better off putting another offensive weapon on the field and spread the d. It works better, plus opens up the pass (hence why the early 90's Bills were consistently a top rushing team, whereas the more recent "run-focused" teams with a traditional FB rarely broke the top 10)

As for our "two talented, mobile, small tight ends" - Small - yes. Mobile - eh... not for their size. Talented - Shouman has shown decent talent, but isn't a #1, the jury is still out on Fine. They need a gamebreaker and given the remaining offensive weapons, it would behoove them to bolster more pressing needs (DE and OG) and spend a later round pick on TE. If they really wanted to get interesting they would spread the offense with 3 WR and 2 RB and get the best 5 skill players on the field - but Turk hasn't shown me that he can build an offense around his players yet.
