Space Shuttle Off for another mission

Discovery, making its way to the international space station, is carrying the orbiting outpost's biggest room by far — Japan's $1 billion lab.

The shuttle is also delivering a spare pump for the space station's malfunctioning toilet.

Since volume and weight are at a premium, they are also (at my suggestion) taking along a tennis ball for the old plug hole!

They are doing a surprisingly good job getting these things off in a timely manner the last few years, the hail storm on Atlantis non-withstanding. I was one who thought that this headlong pace of launches was going to get them in big, big trouble. So far, they've pulled it off well. As far as the toilets in space go, Mike Mullane wrote a very funny piece about going to the bathroom in space in his book Riding Rockets. His advice: Get naked, it's much easier to clean skin than a spacesuit...

How many billions ? And they can't make a toilet that doesn't clog !

it's a Russian design, a veritable bargain at $19M

A NASA spoke woman said that paying 19 million U.S. dollars for a Russian-built international space station toilet system is a bargain compared to building one from scratch. The toilet system, similar to the one already in use in the station's Zvezda Service Module, is scheduled to arrive at the space station in 2008 and will offer more privacy for a crew expected to double from three to six by 2009. Another plus is astronauts are familiar with how it works because it's similar to one already in place at the space station. The space station toilet will be installed on the American side, and the current toilet system on the Russian side will remain in place.

Well, it has not given us the ability to differentiate the difference between the circumference of your belly and someone's perceived fiscal irresponsibility. :(
