First four picks

Recommended Posts

I was bored so I thought I'd throw down a mock draft for the Bills with their first four pick (rounds 1 through 3):

1st Patrick Willis LB

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/willis_patrick

This is so logical it's not even worth an explaination.

2nd Jason Hill WR

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/hill_jason

I know many here want the Bills to get a RB like Pittman in round two after taking Willis, but I think this is a bad strategy. Having a player like Jason Hill opposite Lee Evans would be an extreme upgrade to Peerless Price (who is a shell of what he was when he lit up the Bills scoreboard many years ago) at the number two receiver position. He's super fast, was very productive in college, stayed all four years and has had great workouts. He's ready! I hope others around here get on the Jason Hill 2nd round pick express. As for Parrish, I think he's too small for that number two roll.

3rd Tony Hunt RB

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/hunt_tony

The more I see mock drafts the more I think the Bills should wait on getting their runningback till the first pick in round three. Is there really that much of a difference bewteen Antonio Pittman, Tony Hunt, Darius Walker? One of these guys will be there with the third rounder so the Bills should look at another hole to plug in the second (I think that Hill is the BEST choice, see above).

3rd Tanard Jackson CB

http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/2007/jackson_tanard

This is where you hope that one of the talented corners (like Jackson) drops. Someone will be there and I'm guessing at Jackson. He's a good fit.

Antonio Pittman will be our second round pick. I don't see why we should wait till the 3rd round.

I explained why. Pittman and Hunt look to be very close in talent, so why not add another starter with that second round pick. One that scores touchdowns and had an over 18 yards per catch average in college. I'm sorry but Pittman isn't that special.

Hunt and Pittman are such different types of players that I would have a very hard time considering one as an adequate replacement for the other.

I don't think they're in the same group in this draft, anyway. While I'm not overly impressed with Pittman, I do think he's probably the best of the 2nd tier Rbs in this draft. Meanwhile, I think Hunt is at the top of the third and final group.

They have differing skills, yes. But BOTH are in the 2nd tier. What Hunt lacks in elusiveness which Pittman has, he makes up for in that he's a much bigger back and he's apparently much better at catching the football than Pittman. These are two big plus' for an NFL runningback.

Be that as it may, Jason Hill would be a perfect complement to Lee Evans. Given the choice between having the replacement starters being either A. Pittman and P. Price or T. Hunt and J. Hill, the clear choice for me would be having Hunt and Hill replacing McGahee and Price. Which ever back they draft, they only have one year to make a good impression given the class of 2008 runningbacks.

DAMN!! Champ, what he do..steal your shoes or something?

He is from Cleveland and went back to sign autographs with Ginn and Smith. Those three jerks were asking for $50 cash per item signed at a local sports shop. So $100 would get you two things signed. What charity was the money going to you ask? Thier personal bank accounts. That is so shallow. These three dipsh-ts are going to be millionaires at 22 years old and they have to pull that crap? I hope all three are busts.

Who exactly would pay $50 for Pittman's autograph (or the other two for that matter)?

Hunt may be slightly better than Pittman as a receiver, but he doesn't seem to be a player who adds a significant extra value as a true receiver. He's a screen pass or dumpoff target only, even if a very good one. He's not Lorenzo Booker or Marshawn Lynch, both of whom are skilled enough to be dangerous downfield receiving threats.

I'm sure we'll disagree on this, but I believe that size is also one of the most overrated attributes when evaluating RBs. People equate size with strength and its not always true. Acceleration and short area quickness are at least as important. The average 210lb Rb is going to break his share of arm tackles. Its an exceptional 235lb+ RB that can make an NFL CB or S miss in the open field with some consistency. Short yardage is where size can help a bigger RB, but on the flip side, with defenses stacking the LOS, they can also become a big target.

BTW, Hunt averaged a little over 9 yards per reception in college, not 18 (88 receptions for 799 yards).

I was talking about getting Jason Hill (who does have an over 18 ypc avarage) in addition to Hunt. Sorry for the confusion.

My bad. I should have realized that immediately. As far as Hill is concerned, he would seem to be a very good 2nd round pick.

Great draft. I totally agree about 2nd round RBs. If we don't land Peterson or take a flyer on Lynch, everyone will panic, because of our RB hole. But I don't see great value in any of the 2nd round RBs. We'll be able to get some committee help in round 3. The only "2nd round RB" I like this year is Michael Turner.

I've actually started feeling pretty similar about LBs. Good values in the 1st round and probably in the 3rd or 4th, but I'm not sure about the LBs who would be available to us in the 2nd - maybe David Harris, but he could be in there in the 3d anyway. So for me, it's 1st round or 3d round on LB/RB (and I'd be happy to see one of the two DTs in the 1st, as well).

Which leaves the 2nd round for WR or DB, because I think there will be real value at those two positions there. (Note: I don't even care if we draft any WRs or DBs in the abstract. But if you look at the specific players who might be there in the 2nd like Hill or Rice at WR or Hughes or Jackson (I don't think he lasts until the 3rd) at DB, they could be real impact players. I wouldn't panic and grab any old RB/LB just for the sake of it. - Now if Marv and gang love a particular RB/LB in the 2nd slot and do feel he is much better than the 3rd rounders that will be there, then that's another story. But from the couch at home, I don't see it.)

Hunt and Walker don;t even qualify for day 1.

Agree to wait unitl 3rd round, but Brandon Jackson or Lorenzo Booker are better options.

id be EXTREMELY happy with that draft. i dont know why theres all the hate for Hunt. he's a strong back who catches and blocks very well. if we could get him in the 3rd, it would be a steal. heck, if we got either fo tose guys in the 3rd, we'd be lucky.

Its definitely not hate for Tony Hunt, but definitely concern over whether or not he's just a good collegiate RB. Its not just his 40 time. His overall workout was very poor. I look at him and see another Jonathan Linton; a player with good strength, intangibles and receiving skills, but quite possibly lacking the athleticism necessary to play in the NFL.
