A whopping 98.5 percent of season-ticket holders have put down a deposit for their playoff tickets, while 90 percent already have renewed for next year — more than six months before the start of next season. And with the team’s own 14,800 season-ticket cap still in place for next season, Sabres officials believe there’s a decent chance they won’t be able to provide minipacks — which typically allow fans to buy tickets for five, 10 or 20 games. The very definition of mediocre, yet they sell out every game, every night, year after year on the promise of hope. Why can't the Bills have fans like that?? One for sure but not both. Its possible to keep both, the key is that contracts have to be given NOW, and some players like Connolly, Hecht, Kalinan, or a Kotalik may need to be moved to make room financially. If you don't let Briere or Drury sniff FA, you could get Briere for around $6 mil for 5 years, and Drury for about $5mil for 5 years. Instead I can see them losing both because by the time Darcy gets around to talking contracts, they might as well test their worth on the open market where someone will offer both $7 mil plus a year. Losing either will have an effect at the box office and with the fan base. Remember, the average fan doesn't spend all day on a message board reviewing the cap numbers and financial trends in the NHL. They know these are the 2 most popular players (besides Miller) that will both become FA's and will want both back. Losing one will bring this team back down to Earth and they will be fighting to get back to where they are right now. Now lets just say, for sh*ts and Giggles they don't win the cup (I mean its not a given they will, look at Ottawa last year, who thought they would be out second round?, who thought Carolina even had a chance) and are knocked out 2nd round or in the finals. Are fans going to be happy now seeing one of the best players allowed to walk? Are they going to support a team that yet again had their season end in disapointment and then seemingly get worse by letting one of their best players go? The only way Buffalo continues to pack the building with Season ticket holders is to keep the team at the top. As for the comment about the Leafs. Its called corporate backing, and a very long tradition (because they are an original six) with a huge fan base. The lower bowl is mostly owned by corporations which limits seating to the average fan and allows the prices to be huge.
