May Movies: Summer Season starts with....

Hello again everybody, I have been back since Monday, just have'nt had time to post anything. I had a great time at the draft, even though being a Bills fan was pretty rough after our first pick. Still I think the Bills had a good solid draft, and I have a lot of faith in Marv Levy.

Enough on that now, let me get to the real point of this topic. The month of May is here, and from this moment all the way through June, it is the most boring time of the year for football fans. However, May also signals the start of the Summer Season at the movie theatres. So we will have plenty of mindless fun at the cinemas as the distributors unleash their tentpole films.

Thanks to "Ice Age 2", "Scary Movie 4", "The Benchwarmers", & "Silent Hill", the month of April was a very profitable one, unlike last year. The distributors know that there is nowhere to go but up with even bigger titles coming in the next 4 months. This month alone has 4 big movies. One each opening every Friday.

 

One of the biggest weekends of the summer is Memorial Day weekend, and opening on that coveted weekend is "X-Men: The Last Stand". The 3rd installment in this series centers around the government's "cure" for mutancy, the return of a mutant thought to be lost, and the possible beginning of the all out war between mutants and humans.

Once again the entire cast from the first 2 films, except for Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, returns intact. There are some new additions as well, Kelsey Grammar as Beast, Ben Foster as Angel, Ellen Page as Shadowcat, & Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut. Let us all hope that this is not the "last stand" of this very good series.

 

Before Ian McKellan returns as Magneto he will be starring opposite Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno, & Alfred Molina, in the highly anticipated "The Da Vinci Code". Ron Howard is in the director's chair and adults and fans of the celebrated book will be out in full force for this taut drama, centering around a symbologist who uncovers an ancient conspiracy involving the origins of the holy grail.

 

Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt in "Mission Impossible:III". This time "Alias" & "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams directs. Little is known about the plot, but fans will know they will get a lot of explosions, gunfire, high tech spyware gadgets, and Tom Cruise running around. The supporting cast is top notch too, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne, Ving Rhames, & Kerri Russell co-starring.

 

An all-star cast headlines the disaster remake "Poseidon". Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Josh Lucas, Emmy Rossum, Andre Braugher, and Mia Maestro all find themselves aboard the doomed cruise ship. It has been nearly a decade since "Titanic", so people who want to see a disaster drama involving a large ship, will get their fill here. Wolfgang Petersen may not be James Cameron, but he's had success with films on the water before.

 

Of course there are other films that have significantly smaller budgets than the films above which will be released this month too.

 

For those who want a good scare, look no further than "An American Haunting". Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, & Rachel Hurd-Wood star in this chiller, based on the true accounts of "The Bell Witch". Set in 19th century Tennessee, this is the only known story of where a ghost was responsible for the actual death of a man.

 

From the creators of "Shrek" & "Madagascar" comes "Over the Hedge". This story centers around a group of forest animals who find their land is being encroached upon by suburbia. Will they all be able to lead their normal lives, or will they find the temptations of the human world to be irresistable? Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carrell, Nick Nolte, & William Shatner lend their voice talents.

 

"Just My Luck" stars Lindsey Lohan as a mannhattanite who is known as the luckiest woman in the world. All that chancges when she crosses paths with a down-and-out of his luck guy(Chris Pine).

 

A group of endangered owls are about to have their habitat wiped out by construction. Only 3 teenagers can stop them, in "Hoot".

 

I'll let the tagline for "See No Evil" speak for itself. "Eight Teens, One Weekend, One Serial Killer". That serial killer is none other than the WWE's Kane.

Here is a pair of Independant films to watch for.

 

"Art School Confidential" stars Max Minghella, Sophia Myles, & John Malkovich. The creators of "Ghost World" bring another of Daniel Clowes' graphic novels to life. This story centering around the world of art school.

 

"Down in the Valley" stars Edward Norton, Evan Rachel Wood, David Morse, Rory Culkin, & Bruce Dern. In this film, a young woman falls for a cowboy, much to the chagrin of her father. Is this cowboy who he really seems to be?

I read the book this weekend. Brown is a good fiction writer - it's a fine page turner detective novel with the requisite surprise endings, twists and turns. I'm surprised there's any controversy at all. It's just a good read.

 

It will be interesting to see how it was worked into a flick.
