Schools pulling non-diet pop

Recommended Posts

I'll tell you who doesn't care:  the stock market.

KO (Coke) is down 15 cents, while (PepsiCo) PEP is up 15 cents.  Pretty much means that on-campus sales of sugar water don't mean much to the bottom line.

We don't make all that much from the school contracts. School pays a flat fee (usually pretty low) for the product and they set the price at the machine. I was part of a test project aimed at getting healthier products into the vendors. My responsibility was to figure out ways around our vending constraints (e.g. How to vend milk products in a can vendor as older vending machines are not flexible with package selection and price point). Regardless, after a two year study the snapshot conclusion is that kids don't buy juice/water/milk.

Edit: We, as well as our competition saw the writing on the wall a long time ago. The minimal shift in stock price probably can be attributed to analysts being warned about this impending shift for a while.

Amen to that.

I think that the bad publicity that the soft-drink manufacturers have received and the fact that this whole nation consists of fat@$$e$ probably did the trick.

That, and the episode of "The Simpsons" that spoofed the whole thing (remember Bart getting fat and having a heart attack?  Best line was "The machines at school feed me now.").  It certainly didn't win over any supporters to the side of the soda people.

Ha i remember that. Seriously, if i'd cut soft drinks out of my diet, I'd probably be like 30 pounds lighter but i keep drinking it

When I went to school you had a choice of milk that was 1-2 weeks beyond the code date or water from the toilet.  You want me to cry a tear for the pansies of today?  Not fuggin likely.

oh yeah? in our school you drank your own urine or salt water, and then went crazy and died a horrible death, so take your diet pepsi and f-yourself with it!

That said, your after school special dumbass crap with Mellisa was pretty lame.

Pot being "so much stronger now" is a bunch of bullshidt. "Drug dealers selling pills". Oh man...no drug dealers sell pills.

But, at least you Googled historically. I'll give you a B - for trying. I take it you kids have never brought in any decent Thai Stick?

Man, 3 of us smoked one pinner joint of thai after school, we all laughed so hard that my friend developed a gushing nosebleed, and then we laughed harder

After reading this thread, I'm not sure where I stand on the soda in school issue, but I'm sure about one thing:  I wanna go out and beat the crap out of some of these fat ass kids.  Buncha pussies.  Who's with me?

It starts at home though. If the parents are willing to take the time and energy to teach their kids that soft drinks are unhealthy, they will make the choice. My nephews don't touch soft drinks, even when i bring them somewhere to eat, they will not have any because their parents got it into their head that the sh-- is poisonous.

I am with you. Fatasses piss me off. If you cant see that you are fat and cant make a decision to not drink pop, then you deserve an ass beating.

I especially want to beat up those lame bastards who can't even carry their backpack--it's on that wheels-on-a-stick thing that no self-respecting able-bodied person would ever consider using.

My friend in high school had surgery for a twisted testicle, and had to roll his backpack for a couple months.

True story.

Bicycle helmets used to mean an immediate ass beating.

True... I think it was in the late 1970's/early 1980's that Coca Cola switched from using cane sugar...

You are an old timer...   I was still young... Did you notice a taste difference?

682690

No. I was well into beer then.

I have a question. When and why did the backpack "thing" start? In grade school, we kept our stuff in the desks, and in high school, we were issued lockers. Texts for homework were carried in the arm.

What the heck are the kids carrying?

Every now and again somebody raises concerns about back injury and so forth. I tend to believe 'em - these children look like a caravan of pack animals.

That's the only possible exception. Anybody under the age of 90 seen using those things should be asked, "did you just have surgery for a twisted testicle?" If they say no, twist their testicle and say, "well, you're about to."

He could also buy and bring a golddarned can of pop from home if it's that important to him.  The point is that they're encouraging good nutritional choices, and not enabling and even endorsing bad ones, by not offering soda.

BTW, An 18 year-old can go out and buy smokes, but he can't buy them in school.  Your argument is ludicrous.

The only people "suffering" here are the filthy-rich soft-drink manufacturers that have been socking it to schools and kids.

682589

Maybe if you took a second and thought about it you would have actually understood my argument. Did you really think I meant just because you can legally buy something, it should be sold in school? Yeah I think porn, tobacco, and guns should be sold in school to anyone 18 and over. Yeah that was it. I meant that by the time you're in high school, the law has granted you some pretty significant rights and the ability to make some pretty important life decisions. Therefore I think that a high schooler should be able to decide for themselves if they want to drink a fuggin non-diet coke or not.
