This has to hurt both Modrak and Guy's credibility

Recommended Posts

I was bored, so I was checking out the Buffalo Bills website for that draft video I remember seeing. Both Modrak and Guy were a big part of it and looked like they were worried about not getting him. They also both seemed happy to get him. Plus, then it replayed the quote from ESPN....

"Tulane QB JP Losman is a guy the Bills really like. The Bills love him."

I wish the war room was on PPV for the draft...I know you cant do it for obvious reasons, but this is quality reality TV

yeah, it's better than any other reality TV show I have seen. I love watching TD squirm when he no one is willing to trade down. ;)

Yeah, and someone who correctly handled the Chicago Bears and Detroit lions QB situations over the last 10 years is probably uniquely qualified to help him  ;)

exactly, and we know the formula ...........run, run, run, kick

That's what scares me. We got an idiot head coach that couldn't handle QB competion if his life depended on it. His QBs in Chicago and Detroit were a !@#$ing mess. It was one big carousel. ;)

Injuries played a big part of the "carousel" in Chicago. As far as Detroit goes, he came to the conclusion, as most everyone else but Matt Millien did, that Harrington wasn't going to get it done. When Jauron was named the interim HC in Detroit, he promptly made Garcia the starter. Garcia got hurt! Harrington was back in the starter role again! Injuries were a big part of both situations...

Right you are buftex. I like reading your comments, you're a good poster.

I think that the more time that goes by and I see the strategies develope with Marv and Jauron, the more I like it. We just might actually have a pretty good and STABLE tandem going on here. As in Losman, I'm willing to give Jauron ALOT more time before I form an opinion on his abilities.

Thanks to you both for some rational comments. We were going nowhere before with the past duo. I have the feeling that this one may just be on to something! ;)

I could be wrong, but I don't think Dick Jauron was responsible for signing any players in Chicago; that task fell to their GM. The GM that hired Jauron was inept and the GM who replaced him didn't like Jauron because Dick wasn't "his" guy.

I think the career paths of the men who quarterbacked the Bears during Jauron's tenure speaks volumes; they could give the Tidy Bowl man a run for his money.

First off, Losman is, dare I say it, a victim of last year's coaching staff. He was named the starter without earning the job, which is something that even he was uncomfortable with it. As a result, I'm sure his teammates, who have all had to fight to earn their starting spot, did not fully buy in to a QB who was inserted into the mix. That certainly didn't help Losman last year as he tried to keep his starting role. It would also account for any rumoured "team doesn't like him" messages...

As to where things are now, it's kind of silly to think that the Bills would be ready to shuffle him off without even seeing him make one throw live, just based on tape. They just started the offseason conditioning program last week, so it seems far too early for the coaching staff to have assessed his current capabilities. Does that mean that Marv and company are not "testing the trade waters?" Absolutely not. You have a 3 way competition at QB (as Marv and Dick pretty much had said all along...Dick saying no one will be handed the starting job at any position, that it has to be earned, and Marv saying they'd be picking up a 2nd tier Free agent QB to give us 3 (non-NFL Europe) QB's), which means that there are 2 out of 3 outcomes that result in Losman not getting the starting job. Now this doesn't mean that Losman only has a 33% chance of getting the job, but if he can't beat out two other candidates in a practice scenario, then he's not going to cut it as a #1 QB for this offense during the season. If one of those two situations happen (Nall or Holcomb get the starting nod), you need to be ready for plan B. Plan B cannot (or at least shouldn't) include keeping Losman as a number 2 so you have to determine what your other options are. A trade is the best overall option because you get something for him. So where people are complaining that Levy won't get anything for Moulds because it's already clear the Bills will release Moulds, he's taking the opposite tack of looking for trade partners first in case he needs to dump Losman. This rumored "trade scenario" is not about Losman losing the team's confidence before he even steps out on the practice field, it's not about dumping a "TD guy," it's talking hypothetically with other teams to guage interest in anticipation of a possible outcome. This scenario would be completely consistent with everything we've heard from the coaching staff and front office, and I haven't seen them do anything that's inconsistent with what they've said they were going to do.

As we all know, the verdict is still out on JP. Obviously the Bills really did love him -- or they wouldn't have traded up into the 1st round to get him. Still, I really think that the guy who was blowing the trumpet to get him was Sam Wyche. Remember that it was Wyche who had scouted JP at Eli Manning's workout. Wyche had been very vocal in insisting that JP actually had a BETTER workout than Manning.

TD was the one who was obsessed with getting Losman in the first round, not Modrak and/or Mularkey.  Modrak liked him, but not with that high a pick...

Yep, this is the impression I've had for a long time. Donahoe and Mularkey really liked JP as much as the other QBs. At last year's draft, Donahoe went on record to assert that he believed that JP would have been the #1 overall pick. I think he was pretty obsessed with the notion of proving that he got the better deal over the STeelers.

I don't know if what the guys of WGR are saying is true (that the team hates JP and finds his personality grating) but I know that Donahoe was bested by Cowher in just about every way, and I gather that watching him win a superbowl represented his own personal hell.
