Puhonix Posted August 5, 2005 Share Posted August 5, 2005 NCAA Bans Indian Mascots From Postseason This is a mess, Some schools, if not most schools actually have healthy relationship with the tribes they are named for, such as FSU and the Seminole nation! They have the full support of the group, and even work together to raise awareness and accuaracy of the representation of the Seminole Indians. I'm sure its the same elsewhere. Rich Posted August 5, 2005 Share Posted August 5, 2005 Reminds me of a great skit from the old Mad TV show (before it became Sad TV), when the Native Americans had used the proceeds from their casinos to buy the major sports teams using Native American mascots/names and rename them, like the Cleveland Klan (instead of the Indians) and the Washington Rednecks (instead of the Redskins). After all, how long do you think nicknames like "The Bargaining Jews" or "The Murdering Italians" would last? Only the ironic Irish could be so naively honest. However, this NCAA ruling takes political correctness to its most ridiculous extreme. I despise this kind of tokenism. Most Native American nicknames and mascots connote bravery and a strong, fighting spirit. Apparently these virtues are no longer in vogue, at least in liberal academia.
