Jim Lovell, astronaut, died 8/7/25 at age 97. He flew Gemini 7 and 12 and Apollo 8 and 13.  He was the oldest living astronaut. He was played by Tom Hanks in the movie Apollo 13 and appeared in it as the admiral who greets  them coming out of the helicopter after they splashed down at the end of the movie.

Apollo 8 was the first manned flight  to reach the moon(didn't land) and it was on Christmas eve. They read passages from The Book of Genisis as they broadcast circling the moon.

Remember watching it  on the TV at my grandparent's house. I think it was about 9 PM or so.
