My six month old is sitting indian style in front of me on my computer desk for the first time. I must return to the car lot at 6:00pm and I hate to have to leave him. I am so motivated to make money that I find all I can think of is the next sale. Each near miss or customer who promises to come back and doesn't absolutely ruins my day. I have been teaching for the last 12 years and i am thinking about a change. I am at a great school and everything about my job is top notch, except the pay. I recently started selling cars parttime for Carmax. In my first month, I made almost 2k. I can't help but think about the idea of possibly switching careers. I do not know which product I would like to sell or how would you even get involved in finding that out. I have several questions I need answered. Where would you seek out good sales jobs?? Doug in Florida 349169[/snapback] As someone who understands about being away from the kids more then I would like (I literally missed 2 years of my kids lives when I lived up in Cape Cod....I was active duty during the day and worked the mid shift for their Raytheon contractor on a mid shift.....so I was just....gone) Dont get to wrapped up in the sale that got away.....the next one is right around the corner....my wife (a black jack dealer at a local casino) talks about the "money that got away" every friggen day.....in the end I ask her "did you make money?" she is like well YEAH....but I could have made XXXXX amount of money! Doug in Florida 349169[/snapback] Full disclosure statement: My mom was a teacher. Tough balance to find something you enjoy doing, pays the bills, and allows for time with your family. I quit a relatively high-paying job in California last year to move my family to Florida. I'll be lucky to make half of what my last job paid, but my overall living situation is better now (I'll have more family time, and we live near other relatives now). Priorities change throughout your life; a good trade-off now may not make sense in a few years - then you may find you want/need another change. I don't regret making a lot of money when I did - I'm still reaping the benefits of it, but seeing how happy my wife and kids are now makes up for giving up that gig. Understand too, had I NOT worked that job, we would not have had the financial security to be able to make the move. BTW, I don't remember the guys I bought cars from. I do remember teachers I had thirty years ago. My mother has kept in touch with quite a few of her former students; they've become extended family. She still sees others (got pulled over for speeding a couple years ago - the officer declined to write up his former English teacher ). You can trade money for time, and find a way to get more money. If you give time for money, it's not a trade, it's a sacrifice. You can't get that time back. Sometimes it's not a huge sacrifice, and you can still make it work. Good luck with your decision. Leaving Florida is always an option, but once you get use to this lifestyle and warm weather it is really hard to leave. I, like so many others is often never satisfied. In all honesty, I should be happy as hell to have a home skyrocketing in value and 2 jobs that are both pretty cool. I often see my other friends doing even better and it pisses me off. My wife also makes 50 - 70 per hour doing private speech therapy for little ones. I just wish I could have one job that pays well and that does not require me to work 7 days per week. D Rock Posted June 2, 2005 Share Posted June 2, 2005 Are you "sport-smart"--can you coach a sport? heck try that, you'll make an easy 2-7K coaching a varsity sport and if you coach three sports, then well you can see some of the benefits of that. I coached 5 nights per week and that included many late evening dinners with my players for a grand total of $650!!!!!!!!!!!! Florida coaching is a joke. Pharmacy sales I think are not available.
