Man Accused of Tossing Kittens From Car

HURON, Ohio (AP) - A part-time police officer has been accused of throwing two kittens out of a car while driving at 70 mph.

Derik Wilhelm, 26, is charged with two counts of animal cruelty and two counts of abandoning animals. The charges are misdemeanors that carry up to 90 days in jail.

Wilhelm is an officer in the village of Castalia, about 50 miles east of Toledo, and a ranger for Erie MetroParks.

A man called the Erie County Sheriff's Office around noon Tuesday to report seeing a driver in front of him throw two kittens out a window. The caller estimated the vehicle was doing 70 mph on state Route 2.

The caller reached dispatchers again about 30 minutes later to report seeing the man toss another kitten, this time on a street in Lorain. Police there stopped Wilhelm's car, according to the sheriff's office.

Authorities couldn't find any kittens at the first location, sheriff's Capt. Paul Sigsworth said. They found one kitten in Lorain and treated it for minor injuries.

Messages seeking comment were left on Friday for Wilhelm at both agencies and with relatives.

Jim Lang, chief of operations for the parks district, said Wilhelm denied the allegations.

"The only thing he says is it's not true, it didn't happen," Lang said.

Wilhelm is due in Huron Municipal Court next week.

If true, they should throw this punky brewster out of a car at 70mph.

Obviously the man is an amateur scientist and he was just studying the effects of acceleration upon a cat's ability to land on his feet. Honestly I don't understand the slandering of this poor man. I bet you people would want to string up Galileo and Newton too, bunch of cro-mags. What kind of world do we live in when a man can be arrested for experimenting with kittens?!?! Long live science!!!

And, one must be practical. It's really hard to get a pony through a side window.

Who leaves a country packed with ponies to come to a non-pony country? It doesn't make sense.. am I wrong?

Paul Simon?

All I know is that it forced me into buying an SUV (bigger windows) and I had to hire illegal immigration labor to get one sorry assed pony out of one side window. He didn't even bounce and spin, just sort of stuck there. Now, I have contributed negatively to both the immigration issue and the energy problem.

So much for science. I'm going to kill some nice fluffy bunnies now. Killing bunnies is a good thing, don't you think?

I heard a story once on TV about six years ago about a guy that stole an old lady's car with a bunch of buddies. Her cat was in the car. Once on the thruway he preceded to take the cat by the tail and swing it around a few times before letting it go. This was reported by the man that was in a car behind the guy that got hit with the cat. He said (and i try to quote), "This thing came at me, the cat was flying with all four legs spread wide as it flew into my windshield belly first."

While i love cats and am a cat person, i can't help but laugh as i imagine a cat flying on the highway at a high speed with all for legs spread going, "Meowwww" I still get a laugh to this day, hence me remembering it for almost a decade.

There is nothing amusing or funny about throwing a kitten, cat, or any animal from a car going 70 mph.  All of you that think that is cute or amusing or really nothing but a bunch of a#$holes.
