I believe you're incorrect here.  The Browns can eat a portion of Baker's salary next year in a trade.  For example, the Panthers paid 7 million of Bridgewater's 10 million dollar contract last year when they traded him to the Broncos who paid the remaining 3 million.

You're right in that if they cut him and he's signed they save about a million dollars in dead cap (they'll pay him 17.7 million of his 18.8 million salary).

It is his 5th year option that is fully guaranteed so referencing other veterans doesn't corelate. There is no bonus money or anything to create any savings in a trade like the other 4 years of his contract.

AFAIK that means the entirety of the contract follows him.

We have talked about this same situation re: Edmunds. We can wipe him off the books entirely with a trade and use his $12M elsewhere.

Except the trade that brings CB James Bradberry to Buffalo

I accept the exception.

It is in the CBA. When you take together the non-negotiable 5th year option together with the provisions posted above that is the effect it has.

Allen's option was replaced. That is permitted. But if you are playing on the option you are playing on the full salary as base salary because you are not permitted to do anything else.

I agree an extension is possible to allow them to make him more attractive for trade. But that is only going to happen IMO in order to facilitate a deal for Baker's preferred spot and that really depend where the relationship between him and the Browns is at.

Fifth year options are not negotiable in that they are set by the CBA rules.  They are replaceable in that the player and team can agree to replace it with any contract they want.  That includes a one year deal for the exact same total amount, but split between signing bonus and salary.
