Baker Mayfield bemoans lack of accountability and discipline

Quote

It’s just non-disciplined,” Mayfield told reporters regarding the rash of penalties, “guys not being focused on doing their job. It starts first and foremost with me, to be a leader every single down. Get our guys lined up, make sure that we’re set, we’re paying attention because if we can’t use cadence we’re hurting ourselves. Any time we try to use a double count, it seems like we’re false starting a little bit, but we’ll get the discipline part fixed, the accountability. Like I said, we’ve pointed out the problem, now we have to execute it on Sundays. Once again, I feel like we had a great week of practice, we just didn’t translate it.”

Stuff that we’ve already pointed out the problem and haven’t fixed it? Yeah, it’s frustrating,” Mayfield said. “Very frustrating. I hate to keep saying it again, but everything is in front of us. But to get to where we want to go, we’ve got to take care of business one week at a time, and it starts tomorrow. It starts [with] preparation for the Broncos.”

I just think everyone has to be singular focused on doing your job, not worrying about what’s going on on the outside,” Mayfield said. “We have to be willing to sacrifice the ultimate price to get to what we talked about preseason, our ultimate goals. We have to be able to sacrifice stuff each and every day. Time, focus. It’s going to be a long stretch, but our guys are capable of doing that, and so it’s my job to make sure we do that each and every day. Like I said earlier, it starts tomorrow.”

“[W]e just need to be harder on ourselves,” Mayfield said. “The accountability thing is making sure everybody’s locked in each and every play. I can’t have eyes on everybody at every single time, neither can the coaches. It’s got to be within the position groups in making sure everybody’s in the right place at the right time.”

The part in bold seems like it could potentially rub some guys the wrong way, especially after the way Mayfield has been playing lately, and with how much outside noise he himself has brought in (between all his commercials, interviews, magazine covers and headline grabbing quotes, etc).

I love Tre'davious White. But we passed on DeShaun Watson AND Patrick Mahomes to trade down for White, which also allowed us room to trade up for Zay Jones. (Ouch)
I like Josh Allen. But Josh Allen is unlikely to ever hit the level of DeShaun Watson, and unlikelier still to hit the level of Patrick Mahomes. Having a shutdown corner is nice. Having an elite QB is a whole different thing.

Funny, I figure at the beginning of the year most here would have liked Allen over Watson. Just homerism really but I was pretty high on Watson myself. I remember the announcers even mentioning that TD throw as one of those potential MVP plays you see several times over if he keeps up winning.

There have been other dominant teams in the past, but I can't remember one of them making the league as predictable & boring as the Patriots.

They'll make the SB, and some NFC team will give them a fight, and then the season will end.

I wonder if Bill Walsh had stuck with the 49ers maybe he and Steve Young would have had a little more success. It helps there was never any clear succeeding dynasty like Dallas stonewalling San Fran at least batting .500 with the Pats.

Also has me realize Beli's longevity. Coaches in the past couldn't adapt to the game for so long. I don't see the league changing as much in this last 20 year stretch as it did in NFL past. But we don't really have the perspective at the moment. Maybe it has. But lot of current coaches up there in wins: that could help some future dynasty be able to have the longevity Beli's had as well.

Really the hypotheticals you can play with San Fran in the past makes me think this won't be unprecedented. Same reason I don't think the Bills 4 SBs in a row is that impossible. There's like 7 teams in history (Dolphins, Vikings, Cowboys, Bills, Pats x2, Broncos) that made 3 out of 4 lol. It'll be matched.. even if the Pats don't get it done now.
