LJ Shelton?

He's on the outs with Denny Green. Green came to Arizona & didn't like his OL. Why I don't know (other than Shelton reported to camp overweight), but the 1st thing he did was bounce Pete Kendall, who had a solid year with the Jets in 2004.

Shelton for Henry is low risk because Henry is in the final year of his contract, while Shelton's $3 million salary is reasonable for a starting LT. As long as TD doesn't do something stupid, like restructuring Shelton (like he did with Bledsoe), if Shelton bombs we can cut him with no cap hit in future years since Arizona is taking the full hit on his bonus.

With Shelton it's an upgrade over moving Teague or going with an untested LT.

Does anyone have good updated information on this guy? Can he play LT or not? Why is Denny Green dumping this dude?

Bottom line- Will he upgrade our offensive line or not?

Holly Cow! Hasn't there been enough TSW discussion of Shelton over the past two months?

Here's his profile from Scouts, Inc.

Comment:

Shelton is a good athlete for his size, he has tremendous upper body strength, he shows a good initial punch, he extends his arms, and when he is locked onto a defender, he can be very effective.

At left tackle, he does not have what you are looking for athletically but he can be effective if he can get his hands on the defender, lock on with his long arms, and simply ride the speed rusher past the pocket.

However, if you put him on an island and ask him to be an athlete and to handle double moves or great first-step quickness, he is going to be in big trouble as he is simply not very good in space. Because of his size, Shelton can dominate at the point of attack.

Will push the pile in the running game, comes off the ball hard and can simply overpower DL to get the job done. He needs to continue to improve his footwork, but he has a good work ethic and will certainly give you good effort.

Shelton has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far but he is still young enough to salvage a nice career if he's eventually moved inside to guard.

You could say many of the same things about his Dad, when he was in the NBA.

It seems like Bennie Anderson means that we won't try very hard to get Shelton. It seems like the strengths and weaknesses of Anderson and Teague complement each other on the left side. It seems like Shelton would make the left side a little too plump and slow.
