Just curious to see what everyone thinks about our kicking situation this season...As my subtitle was trying to say, this poll does not include Adam Vinateiri since he is 99.9% sure to get a new deal with the Patriots or be franchised by them.

I voted for Gramatica however there is another kicker in this draft that for whatever reason does not get the play that "The Nuge" has on this board. I'm speaking of Jonathan Nichols. He had a great Junior year but struggled a little as a senior but definately has an NFL leg for FGs and kicking off. Here's a link to his college bio. He might be worth taking a flyer on in the 6th or 7th Round.

Gramatica is interesting, and I almost had forgotten about him this offseason. He dominated at kicking in the NFL until the last two years when his production really dropped. Was it because of his dislike of Gruden like he said? Or did he just tank out?

Who knows what happened but it can't hurt to try and sign him to a low end contract to at least compete with Lindell in the preseason.

I think the way to go is for the scouting staff to check out the CFL for their top free agent guys, Mike Vanderjagt began his career in Toronto and an emerging kicker for the Chefs.. Lawrence Tynes started for the Ottawa Renegades!! Besides, these guys get paid nothing and are begging just to get in the NFL!! Most of them are cold weather kickers already and would be a perfect fit in Buffalo!! ( canadian perspective EH!)

I don't know where you got he does not like Gruden. I live down here, and heard him on local radio after he was cut. He said he loved Gruden, and his biggest regret was letting Gruden and the team down. I did not vote to bring him here because after watching him the last 2 years I think his confidence is gone. He is a great guy and I hope he recovers but I don't see it.

When he signed with the Colts on ESPN Radio he said that he felt that Gruden put too much of the blame on him and criticized him too harshly for missing kicks that even the best NFL kicker would struggle to make. I just got the impression he did not like his former coach from that interview.

I've heard that Nichols had a foot injury that hampered him throughout this season. In any event, its worth mentioning that there are other kickers in this draft besides Nugent. In addition to Nichols, another possible alternative is Tyler Jones of Boise State, who was 24/27 on FGs this season, and while I have no data on the last two years, his sophomore season, he was used as a kickoff specialist and had 54 touchbacks on 103 kickoffs.

His Junior season, he was 19 out of 25 on field goals and 75 out of 76 on extra points. Longest was 52 yards. Like you mentioned, he was used as a kickoff specialist his soph season, but had a few attempts, making 3 out of 8.
