Who has a roster spot locked up??

Recommended Posts

There's obviously some subjectivity in performing an exercise like this, but these are the players that I think have a roster spot locked up prior to training camp (of course, barring an injury or trade). Some guys are not on this list because they haven't proven themselves yet or because their high salary cap figure is not commensurate with how they are performing/how others at their position are performing.

The locks (39 players):

QB (2): Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brad Smith
RB (3): Fred Jackson, C.J. Spiller, C. McIntyre
WR (4): Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, Donald Jones, T.J. Graham
TE (1): Scott Chandler
OT (3): Cordy Glenn, Erik Pears, Chris Hairston,
OG (3): Andy Levitre, Kraig Urbik, Chad Rinehart
C (1): Eric Wood
DE (4): Mario Williams, Mark Anderson, Chris Kelsay, Shawne Merriman
DT (3): Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus, Spencer Johnson, Dwan Edwards
OLB (4): Nick Barnett, Kirk Morrison, Bryan Scott, Nigel Bradham,

ILB (1): Kelvin Sheppard
CB (4): Stephon Gilmore, Aaron Williams, Justin Rogers, Ron Brooks
S (3): Jairus Byrd, George Wilson, Da'Norris Searcy
SP (2): Rian Lindell, Garrison Sanborn

I agree with most of those, but not McIntyre (because of Dorin Dickerson possibly replacing him at the H-back position). I also don't agree with Kelsay, Johnson, or Edwards, as there is a lot of competition there. Do I think those three will be cut? No. However, I don't think it's set in stone that all three have a roster spot. Also, Rogers and Brooks will have to prove themselves before they are a lock to be given a roster spot. McGee probably comes before either of them, and with the money given to McKelvin already, they may decide to keep him (I hope not!) and put one of those two on the practice squad.

I hope McKelvin shines and earns a starting spot. It would be a good thing with all of his talent. Let's support these young men and only hate them once they are picked up by the Jets, Fins and Pats.

Picking Locks in June is tough. You might turn out to be right, but here are some that are in doubt.

McIntyre - may not keep a traditional full back and Dickerson's versatility could win out.

Dawn Edwards and Spencer Johnson. The performance of the D last 2 years has shown these guys are below average and a major reason for the big spending in the off season. There will be a major veteran presence on the line anyway, so I think young guys like K. Heard and Carrington have a better chance to make the team.

Kirk Morrison - might be a good fit in the new D. But he was unimpressive last year. Plus Wanny's preference for speed should favor young guys such as Carder, Moats, and C. White.

Justin Rogers and Brooks. I would expect they'l both be on the opening day roster. But they're hardly locks. For what it's worth McGee and Mckelvin are ahead on the depth chart

Here's my predictions. Not locks but who I think will male the team

QB- (3) Fitz, Young, Smith

RB- (4) Freddy, CJ, Choice, CMac

TE- (1) Chandler

WR- (6) Stevie, Nelson, Jones, Graham, Hagan, Easley

OT- (4) Hairston, Pears, Glenn, Sanders

OG- (3) Levitre, Rhinehardt, Ubrik

C- (1) Wood

DE- (4) Williams, Merriman, Kelsey, Anderson

DT- (4) Dareus, Williams, Johnson, Heard

OLB- (4) Barnett, Morrison, Bradham, Carder

ILB- (1) Shephard

CB- (6) Gilmore, Williams, McGee, McKelvin, Rogers, Brooks

SS- (2) Wilson, Searcy

FS- (2) Byrd, Scott

K/P- (4) Lindell, Morman, Sanborn, Rookie Kicker

that's 49. I expect others to make the cut with some suprise cuts.

Guys that I expect to make it:

Dickerson, Carrington, Moats, Batten, Martin, Roosevelt

Guys unexpected to be cut:

Troup, Thigpen, Edwards

of course there's always training camp to change things and injuries to take into account.

It's funny, with the difficulty our defense has had in recent years, but I believe our CB's are among the best in the league now, as a group. I think we have to keep A. Williams, Gilmore, McKelvin, Brooks, and Rogers, with McGee being the sixth CB on the opening day roster. If we put Brooks or Rogers out there to be snagged by anyone, they would be in short order - both are good enough to play on a number of teams. Our core group of young guys is solid, and looks to be set for the next half decade in Gilmore, Williams, Brooks, and Rogers - and, if McKelvin can turn it on this year in a new system/new role, he may end up also staying at a lower salary (although I think he'd test the market, and being a former 1st rounder, if he has a good year would be picked up by some needy team - with McKelvin it's never been about talent, it's always been the mental aspect of the game. Maybe Wanny's system will allow him to shine?).

I agree with everything on this projected roster except for two guys, Heard and Potter.

QB- (3) Fitz, Young, Smith

RB- (4) Freddy, CJ, Choice, CMac

TE- (1) Chandler

WR- (6) Stevie, Nelson, Jones, Graham, Hagan, Easley

OT- (4) Hairston, Pears, Glenn, Sanders

OG- (3) Levitre, Rhinehardt, Ubrik

C- (1) Wood

DE- (4) Williams, Merriman, Kelsey, Anderson

DT- (4) Dareus, Williams, Johnson, Heard

OLB- (4) Barnett, Morrison, Bradham, Carder

ILB- (1) Shephard

CB- (6) Gilmore, Williams, McGee, McKelvin, Rogers, Brooks

SS- (2) Wilson, Searcy

FS- (2) Byrd, Scott

K/P- (4) Lindell, Morman, Sanborn, Rookie Kicker

Heard is certainly a good player, but may not fit into Wanny's pass rushing DT scheme. Heard is more of a run stuffer than a lean pass rusher.

Potter would be an awful nice luxury to have on the team, but I think that the Bills have too many talented players at other positions to keep Potter. Hopefully, the Bills can retain him on the PS and maybe activate later in the year if injures start to take their toll.

49 players are listed minus the two that I mentioned means that the other 6 that I would project include:

D. Edwards, Carrington, Moats, C. Brown, Dickerson, McKillop.

CMac makes the team because of his ST prowess.

Thanks. Seems like i did fairly well. I agree with Heard I just don't think they keep Edwards because of his paycheck. I think they'd rather go with a younger talent. They seemed to like Heard alot last year so that why I named him. I could see Carrington taking that spot or Troup but it seems Troups career may be done.

I also picker Potter (thanks for reminding me his name) because he can BOOM it into and out of the endzone and that would be a huge field position advantage in a regular basis. I also took into thought that Carrington would be one of the expected to make the team, along with Batten and Moats. This eliminated needs for additional players at certain positions like DL and LB. Carrington could okay anywhere from LB to DE to DT if needed and in a pinch. Moats and Batten and possibly White (who I forgot to mention) can all play STs, DE, OLB, ILB if needed in a pinch. This saves roster spots for guys like Potter. When I look at good playoff teams, they tend to have a few specialist players in thier teams every year. For us that's Smith, Potter, Merriman (because we have Mario, Kelsey and Anderson) Merriman becomes our wild card 3rd down pass rusher. At least if he's in the same health as last year. If he's close to lights out then Anderson is that guy.

Two other names I'd add to make the team are Lee Smith for a blocking TE and this Dickerson guy as another TE H back. I'd go as far to say I wouldn't be shocked to see them keep Dickerson and cut Brad Smith as I think there's quite a bit of over lap in what they bring to the table, but Dickerson may have more options. I don't see that there's enough snaps in a game to utilize both an H back and the Wildcat so one of them goes
