With the changes in defensive scheme....and based on who we have drafted where...are we good in the defensive backfield, or not? Yeah, I know we weren't good last year, but that seems to be more on the screwball coaching situation than anything. I have read the "4_3 over" stuff that was posted in another thread a while back...I don't have the link"

But please, can we get somebody who knows this stuff beyond the basics to tell us whether the people we have, given the 4_3, and given whether that means we will play zone or man, are good/marginal/awful?

The reason I ask is: if we are losing a LB in favor of a DL...doesn't that mean we would need better CBs at least?

I dunno, the more I read about this, the more contradictory it seems to be.

And, didn't we draft McKelvin and Byrd because of their skills. Seems like that's a waste if we are playing zone all the time. In my non-football experience, the reason you play man...is because you have the guys with the skill set to do it. The reason you play zone is because either you are screwing with the other team's offense, trying to keep them off balance, or because you can't stay with their guys.

And, won't drafting a CB at 10 also be a waste...if we are mostly playing zone? I understand why not if it's zone/blitz...but not if the base coverage is zone....or maybe I don't. :wallbash:

From what I know, Wanny prefers a zone, and doesn't like to aggressively use or rely on zone blitzes. He likes to line up with power at the DL position and just go after the QB full bore, which is why they did what they did in FA.

To me, we really don't know what we have in the DBs because of our woeful lack of pass rush the last few seasons. If I had my druthers, I wouldn't choose a DB high this year, and just see what Williams, Florence, McKelvin and McGee and Rogers can do. They need some back-ups, and probably another back-up FS (although Wilson can play both). But I would much prefer to try to fill other positions and see what these guys can do with a pass rush.

I actually expect McKelvin to play well this year. Florence will be Florence, take the very good with the very bad. Williams may already be our best CB and has a great future. And hopefully McGee stays healthy enough to be a #3 or #4 guy.

I think we draft a CB because out of McGee, McKelvin, and Florence I think two of them are gone next season. McGee is one of my favorite players but injuries are slowing him down and McKelvin will not be re-signed next year.

I pretty much agree with this thinking, with the notable exception bolded above. I've never seen a CB with worse "ball awareness" skills, and I don't think that's something a guy can learn. McKelvin is time and time again in great position, yet the receiver makes a big play because McK can't find the damn ball in time. It's absolutely maddening.

If I'm wrong, and he actually CAN learn how to spot the ball sooner, then there's hope. At least he appears to be a great punt returner.

But -- I still think it's better than 50/50 the Bills take Gilmore or Kirkpatrick at #10.
