What were we hearing about Maybin?

I can't recall exactly what the buzz from the Bills was about Maybin before the draft last year. Was he being highly touted by the organization or did they try to keep him under the radar?

I know it's a new regime this year, but it may give us some sort of clue as to who we may pick this year. But probably not

Well...

I was hearing the Bills were definitely one of the Teams interested...I was hearing that Todd McShay felt Maybin was the next Jason Taylor with the best 1st step he's ever seen...I was hearing Mike Mayock say he liked Maybin as a Pass Rush specialist but felt he would be a big time liability vs. the Run...I know Kiper did not like him as much as McShay, but he did not hate him either...I was hearing that he was a bit of a tweener in a 4-3...

I recall Mayock being very high on Maybin, but reiterated that because he was so raw and inexperienced, immediate dividends were unlikely.

Mayock liked him no question...But I remember one specific report he did on Maybin with Film showing him standing up a TE vs. The Run real nice...Then the next Play showed Maybin playing The Run poorly...Mayock was quick to point out on several occasions that Maybin would be a HUGE liability vs. The Run as a DE in a 4-3...I remember it like it was yesterday...He felt Maybin was no where near as strong at the point of attack as he needed to be, and also said Teams would Run right at him...I think the words he used were something like "buyer beware."

Mayock was never high on Maybin! He said that Maybin wasn't strong enough to stand up at the point of attack, and he was years away from being srong enough. He had Maybin ranked 6 out of 6 fo OLB's. He said there was no way he could be a DE in a 4-3.

Last year at this time I wanted the Bills to draft pass rushers. How little difference one year makes.

As for Maybin, I complained several times that there was only one highlight clip of him on Youtube. It was the Rose Bowl against USC and I think it consisted of about 15 or so plays.

He had a strip/sack on a play which was negated because he was offsides. Other than that, the entire highlight package consisted of Maybin trying to speed rush to the outside...in vain.

I knew it was just a small snippet of his career but I wondered aloud how a seeming one-trick pony could be rated so highly.

My two favorite DEs last year were Robert Ayers and Tyson Jackson. Neither had a very productive rookie year but there were extenuating circumstances.

I viewed Ayers as strictly a 4-3 DE. He was a very strong 275 pounder who Denver attempted (and continues to) play as a 3-4 rush backer. I feel very strongly that he's being played out of position.

As for Tyson Jackson, he was drafted very highly, justifying my view of him, but part of that is because he is viewed as an ideal 3-4 DE, a la Richard Seymour. I wanted Jackson because his power and strength would have been a great fit for our 4-3 defense as a LDE. Though I believe Jackson started every game, he now toils at a position where very few players put up any kind of significant numbers.

I also wanted the Bills to draft either Everette Brown or Connor Barwin when they ended up selecting Jairus Byrd. I was very disappointed in the Byrd pick at first but saw his pedigree (father Gil, and Aeneas Williams) and the fact that he broke up something like 70 passes during his career and felt better within about a week of the draft.

I liked the Shawn Nelson pick, but I wanted us to draft Lawrence Sidbury with that pick.

The silver lining is that this year is a much better year for pass rushers. Hopefully we get a few.

I remember thinking how much he sucked and couldnt believe he even declared for the draft let alone was being touted a top 10 talent (by McShay - go figure). Mayock did not liek him one bit as a 3 down player and said he shouldnt be considered for a 43 team at all. I believe I staed it would have to be the 3rd round before I even though about picking him, but prob wouldnt even then.

I remember thinking "there is no way this kid will be drafted before E.Brown/M.Johnson/C. Barwin" The latter of the two were 3rd round picks so I guess my assumption of 3rd-4th round was spot on in that regard.

My favorite college team is Texas, and my favorite play from Texas since VY was Orakpo. I will never recover from that pick.

PS Lamaar Houston is a stud, so is Kindle, thomas, and Mucklerroy Kindle at 9 may happen and I would be OK with it because he could be a D Ware type guy. Houston in the 2nd may be the best value on the board at that point. Muckleroy is prob a cover two LB and Thomas could be a great FS - I hope we dont take those last two.
