Impressions from second QB-WR session -QB Report

I just got back from the second (and final) throwing session of the Combine and I can tell you this... Oklahoma State's Zac Robinson will be rising up draft boards with his performance today.

With highly touted passers Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow and Dan LeFevour all sitting out the throwing session, Robinson was among several passers who took advantage of the spotlight.

Robinson showed good footwork and balance dropping back -- a question mark considering he's coming from a spread offense -- and was consistently accurate to all levels of the field. He zipped intermediate slants and dig routes and showed plenty of drive on the deep out. As a perfect example of why quarterbacks should throw at the Combine, Robinson scored points with scouts on the accuracy of his deep ball (good trajectory, outside shade) despite none of his deep passes actually being caught by his receivers.

Arguably the second most impressive quarterback on this day was surprisingly Ole Miss' Jevan Snead. Snead was as accurate on this day as I've ever seen him -- hitting receivers in stride consistently and showing off his good arm strength. The problem with Snead is that he knows he has a good arm and he relies on it. He carries the ball a bit low and has a very quick release, but he rarely stepped into his throws today, relying almost exclusively on his arm. Snead has intriguing tools -- and he clearly helped his cause today by showing them -- but quarterback coaches I've spoken with in the past have pointed this out as an issue.

Cincinnati's Tony Pike was inconsistent today. The opposite of Snead, Pike has steps into his throws and has a nice over-the-top delivery, which is enhanced by his 6-5, 243 pounds. However, he sprayed the ball today, especially when throwing outside the numbers. He got better as the day went on and didn't do anything to lower his stock, but he certainly didn't seize the opportunity, either.

Under the radar quarterbacks Thaddeus Lewis (Duke), Riley Skinner (Wake Forest) and John Skelton (Fordham) showed why they are rated as they are. Lewis was inconsistent to most levels of the field, except on the deep ball - where his wounded ducks forced receivers to slow and, at times even stop their routes, to wait for the ball. Skelton was wildly erratic, especially early in the gauntlet drills. His high and wide throws consistently forced receivers to adjust, throwing off their balance and timing during drills.

I like what I have been hearing about this Robinson kid. If it's true that he has an accurate deep ball, then I'm in. Good footwork and balance, accuracy and a nice deep ball. Sign me up. We should take him in about the fourth round or so. Whether or not he is a day one starter, I wouldn't mind taking the time to develop him.

Go look at film of the ol Miss, Ok State game. See why both these QB's suck.

if they were polished pro-ready qbs then the talk wouldn't be 3rd to 4th round picks. Just like you can't disregard those games in rating them, they can't be the only games you look at. If they were 6-5 240lbs, great arm strength perfect accuracy on all levels, and impeccable leadership they wouldn't make it to 9 yet alone pick 129. In a discussion like this you have to find what mistakes are correctable and if any of those weaknesses are impossible to overcome with teaching, time, or a well designed system.

Does watching that game prove both these guys should be escorted to the nearest grocery store and taught how to stock shelves? Perhaps you could elaborate if you have such a strong opinion on each. What are their non-redeemable qualities?

I've seen them play, and I'm not sold on either but I haven't seen all that much and your comment didn't add much to the conversation....

I for one agree. Robison and Snead look great in shorts but not so much in pads. they are worth a 6th rounders I guess because thhe could improve, but Im hesitant to draft guys who proved in college they werent very good. Id rather take a guy who started 1 year and player very well, displaying all the tools an NFL QB needs, or a guy with a much much higher ceiling.

Ok, we get it already.. Sam Bradford is God's Gift to Football, and all other QB's in the 2010 Draft class suck.

Did I say anything about Bradford? GO WATCH THE DAMN GAME. Both QB's suck ass. I have seen more than enough of Robinson and his crappy on the field lack of accuracy in games and his inconsistancy to know this guy doesn't have it. Snead flat sucks. The guy is an interception waiting to happen.

It has nothing to do with the other QB's in the draft.

We should not be settling for mediocrity. remember Trent Edwards was had in the third round. Many people thought he would go higher. So the grade was high on him. We need a premier guy. Either in Free Agency or the Draft. If we have to be looking in the weeds for guys than go with LeFevour, Highly touted, but he did not come from a powerful conference. Big schools do produce good players. Whomever this guy is has to be the guy. We cant keep looking for a project. Look at Jemarcus Russell. A project from the start, who cant cut it at the next level.

Yes you did say a LOT of things about Bradford. Just not in this thread. This isn't the only thread you have participated in in this forum that we read
