LOST...Season 6

wow James, great comparison. Hadnt pieced that together before. Willy Wonka was one of those movies I wore out VHS tapes of as a kid, it was the first movie I bought on Bluray. No wonder I liked the show so much!

the use of the Tunnel song from the movie in the promo makes even more sense too

That's on Blu-ray? Sweet!

They definitely used the tunnel rowing song with purpose. I think it went over most peoples' heads.

To further the comparison, in WWATCF, for the people who complain that LOST didn't give enough answers, what did we get out of Wonka? Did we need to know how he found the wherewithal for the Everlasting Gobstopper? How does his elevator work? Entering the factory, they went in a door and went out the same door into a completely different room. We never find out so many things. That doesn't detract from the essential story. The essence of Wonka was trying to find a kid who could move past wanton behavior and make a morally right choice.

Willy Wonka has always been one of my favorite movies...and Gene Wilders performance is, IMHO, absolutely magnificent. And the comparison between WWATCF (yes...we can acronymize anything!) and Lost is quite striking...good call UCJ.

And I too found Doc J's timeline analysis re: the wells to be very enlightening. During my one and only viewing of the final episode, I did try to figure that out myself but shelved it as the episode moved on.

Son of a B word I miss this show!

Oh...and I just ordered Willy Wonka on BluRay!<_<

good choice! the version i got from best buy was a special edition that actually came as a small book with the disc in the back jacket. not sure if there is a "regular" bluray version or if theyre all like that. either way, its pretty stellar.

I don't have a HD TV so won't buy blue ray but count me among the fans of WWATCF and just got it last Christmas on DVD after been wanting to get it for years. In terms of parallels to LOST nice work UConn. In terms of LOST, to me it was ultimately Jack's journey but one we should all follow as to me it was not about not holding onto things in our pasts and not to be afraid to make connections with new people and to stop living for only ourselves. I quoted the No man is an island a few days after the finale aired and think it holds true to the message of the show.

Just a bit of info about the DVD release. The epilogue's title is... "The New Man in Charge" and will run 11 minutes.

There is a video of Darlton being interviewed by Diane Sawyer from just before the finale that's very interesting. Lindelof says specifically that "before all is said and done," there will be "significant illumination" about Walt, the fertility problems on the island, and the polar bears. Since we saw none of these in the finale, it looks like these will be areas covered in the epilogue. (I have also read that the DHARMA food drops will be explained). BTW - here's part 1 of that interview.

-----

Forget if it's been mentioned, but Emmy nominations will be announced on 8 July... usually ~ 8 a.m. ET iirc. Special dispensation was granted for "The End" to be considered for nomination. I believe "Ab Aeterno" is also one that's getting a lot of heat, mainly for Nestor Carbonell. I really hope this show gets its due.

Vozzek69 was always the best read on DarkUFO, and for some reason, I never saw this post. Comprehensive in its scope. Here's a link to his or her website, featuring a 250-page LOST book titled "Things You Never Noticed About LOST."

Among the things in the free .pdf sample is the bit about there being more to it than black and white --- black, white and red. This owes to several examples s/he gives, most notably Michael's card joke, "What's black, white, and red all over?" I had never made that connection. And, before reading all of that section, I'm going to write here that one of Hurley's main colors was red --- t-shirt in this last season, the gold course flag, the flower he put on Libby's grave, the Camaro(?)....

-----

I've also read shortly after the finale (but never got to it) that MIB essentially chose suicide. And when you think about it, there may be a case for this.

We know that peoples' deepest wishes/firm intentions come true on the island. So when Jack said, 'I don't know how, but I'm going to turn out the light and then I'm going to kill you' might have given MIB/FLocke pause. Yet, he says, "Let's get on with it then." Perhaps after learning that the island had a new protector, he may have been a little resigned and was ready to go for broke against the odds --- say, 5 percent that he can best Jack, and 95 percent that whatever kept him there for ~2,500-2,000 years is conspiring to keep him longer. Some might understandably choose to take those odds, as "life" as MIB knew it was grown unbearable, and if he couldn't get release from the island / the Cerberus entity, he could get some release in total death.

Another thing I just thought of, after the funeral thread here on Off the Wall....

The Others' funeral rites now make a lot more sense. Setting Coleen's body adrift into the ocean meant that MIB would have a harder time possessing it. Perhaps that's what they did with Paul's body as well (Amy's husband before Horace Goodspeed).

No discussion about the Vozzek69 stuff?

i was familiar with their darkufo posts as well (thank you for pointing me towards that site). i downloaded the sample chapter of Vozzek's book, but havent had a chance to look at it yet.

i dont know if im on board with the "Red" theory. at this point, i dont know that there is really much more to discover about the story of LOST. i do believe there is a lot of room for discussion and theorizing, but not so much as far as "new plot points".

you just reminded me though! i started rewatching the series a couple weeks ago and got up to episode 3 before i got sidetracked. the gf is gone tonight, so i have the chance to catch a couple more episodes!

back later!! :)

The final "Totally LOST" video set.

Still waiting for Doc's Part 2 of his final, final LOST thoughts that was promised in this column (that duey linked here) a couple of weeks ago.

-----

The geography of LOST, created by a US DoD cartographer.

I, too, haven't read the Red theory yet... so the admonishment is pretty hypocritical. Was kind of hoping for some discussion here to motivate me to get to it.

I haven't started a re-watch yet. This is the longest amount of time after a finale that I've gone w/o starting. Still just giving it time to digest and take a break from it so I can come back with fresher eyes. I'm probably going to wait until early August so finishing S5 converges with the S6 release. Which is totally going to be ruined, b/c the first thing I'm going to be watching is the epilogue. .... Perhaps I should wait and start the rewatch in late August, then.

Thanks. I looked last week. Tho, looking for anything on the EW page is weird. Sometimes, an article will be in the "MOST VIEWED ON EW" column on the right, and will not be listed when you click the "LOST" heading.... Right now, the part 1 to this latest string of the 'Island as Carrie' is not there.

Doc Jensen | Part 2: What the Island 'Saw'

Also, this won't be the last bit from Doc about LOST. There's at least Emmys coverage, then there's sure to be a column or two on the DVD release's Hurley epilogues.

But even after that... I get the feeling that there will be discussion about the show for a long time. Great works with great characters and intriguing plots have a way of staying in the collective conscience. I would actually welcome (and read) an English major's master's/doctoral thesis on this show. But that would be quite a challenge for anyone brave enough to try it. Two-hour movies have provided for hundreds of pages of discussion; LOST was over 120 hours?

I found both part 1 and part 2 by clicking on his name in the by line. It lists all his articles starting with the most recent.

My notes:

Foxy finally got a nod for leading actor! Pulling for him, but I don't think he wins given the competition. Count this as a tribute from viewer-voters to how much he devoted to the show for 6 seasons. As Christian Shepherd said in the church alcove, "Nobody does it alone. You needed them... and they needed you."

The friendly battle b/w O'Quinn & Emerson in the supporting actor category continues. Emerson won this last year, and was nominated in 2007 & 2008. O'Quinn won in 2007, and was nominated in 2005. The depth / ensemble this show had really propelled it to greatness.

To all the haters out there, it sure looks like Hollywoodland loved "The End." (Best Writing, even with "Kiss me, James!" "You got it, Blondie"??? Well... OK!)

Props to Michael Giacchino!!! Without his orchestral scores, LOST just would not have been LOST. Dude is the next John Williams.

A little surprised that Allison Janney didn't get a guest actress nod for "Across the Sea." And that EM did get one for "The End" (She had, what? Five minutes of screen time?)

Some nice recognitions for a superb final season on one of the best shows, ever. Even if they never touch an Emmy personally, my thanks as a viewer goes out to everyone who was involved in making LOST exactly what it was. (And, 12 minutes of what it has yet to be.)
