I disagree that they have "plenty" of weapons.   They are middling wrt weapons offensively and other contenders have some of the best skill talent in the league so they are out-gunned in that regard.    They do have a QB in Josh Allen who can play like the best QB in the league for stretches and make huge plays with his mobility so they will have to lean on that and hope he gets them to the playoffs and gets red hot there.

KC looked pedestrian last week, but you've noted that PHI, SF, CIN, and MIA took QB's who were young/perhaps more limited than Allen and surrounded them with excellent skilled talent.  Helped to get Eagles to a SB last season where they went up against another team with a great QB and high-end skill players.

Not sure where it comes why they keep investing in RB's as though that's the missing ingredient to their offense.  I think it primarily offers, especially with Murray and Fournette, reducing the risk of turnovers and short-yardage options not named Josh.

Step back the Chiefs have scored 20, 17, 19 and 9 against the Lions, Jags and Broncos twice and added Mecole "butter fingers" Hedman at WR. But I know we should work on scoring more than stopping the opposition cuz that worked in 13 seconds game.

Chiefs andhave 3 SB appearances and 2 wins.  They get the benefit of the doubt.

Bills keep faltering in the playoffs with McD's roster.

Predictable that, you can't refute an argument but fall back on asking questions that can't be answered as some sort of dunk.

Ain't got the chops to make your own points.

And how many starters on offense have we lost to injury this season? Bad take.

Zoom out for a second.  Defense is surrendering 17 points per through half the season with their HC moonlighting as DC and those injuries.  That's about what their scoring defense was in 2022 and 2021.

If you're scoring 20, 14, 25, and 24 against the likes of Jacksonville, the Giants, New England, and Tampa Bay I'd say something's wrong.  4 game spells aren't a drop in the bucket.

  5. Amazing how this HC and GM spin the personnel wheel and more often than not wind up with slower RB's and zone CB's.

Team's averaging 21 points over their last 4 and the personnel solution is Fournette and another zone CB.  Even if Douglas plays well, offense is pushed to the background again.

Right but a coach can help his team get looser or tighter, depending on what is needed.

There's tension for sure and some is the pressure to win it all.  At the same time, McD isn't a calming influence and that's what is needed now.

Players take on the personality of their leader(s) and both sides of the ball have either McD or Dorsey running it.  Neither are whom I would consider able to reduce the tension.

How far has McBeane's pro personnel groups evaluations come since 2017 in both talent and contract value?  Not far.

Off-season trade in 2007. Refused to report when Buffalo refused to re-negotiate his contract.

I’m just glad they’re starting to use shakur I was worried that they were not going to be able to find a way to use him and he was going to get away

We need these later round picks to pan out now that we’re paying a franchise quarterback

2pac did get away, is alive, and gone full Machiavelli now.  ;)

Hopefully I can get this in before this thread gets buried.

Bills had their backup 1T and 3T today, and the guys backing them up are a practice squad player and a guy who had been inactive.

The lack of NT was detrimental to the DL, you could see it start when Jones went out but losing Oliver was the kiss of death. Poor DTs + small LBers results in what we saw today. I love our small LBers too, but this defensive performance was predictable.

All the talk of the offense, but Bills MUST bring in a legitimate NT by the trade deadline.

You couldn't name the starting DT's for any 40 front team in the league.  No one could, but yet it's the catastrophic issue that led to this loss.  Right.

The DT depth is awful and the Puna Ford gamble did NOT pay off.

If you're gonna reference the guy, at least spell his name correctly.  And no, it wasn't a gamble.  Dude's on 1 year 2.25M deal.

    That was Bert Bell.

    Rozelle expanded the league.

Bell had a deal with a now defunct TV network to share revenue among owners from 1 game a week.  Not a big challenge because the game in the 50s was largely driven by stadium attendance.  Teams also negotiated their own TV deals locally which wasn't shared.  Rozelle came in and not only expanded the league, he took the increased revenues from gate and television deals and shared that among the NFL owners. And much of that required getting more games on television across multiple networks.

  11. 1 hour ago, Mr. WEO said:

Rozelle got the money machine going, when it was easier to do so.  Goodell has made everyone far richer--not least the players.

You think it was easy convincing the owners back then to share TV revenue equally between big and small markets?

  12. 59 minutes ago, Mr. WEO said:

He is easily the most successful and therefore the greatest pro league commissioner ever.  These owners would pay him whatever he asked to take these punches for them and make them even more rich.

To Terry and the rest...he is simply priceless.

Pete Rozelle was better, but just as sneaky, at being NFL Commissioner.  And neither were good on draft day.

If McD is better off with a different kind of QB, it would just confirm to me that he's an idiot - but I'm asking the question regardless.  I am not stating it as a fact.  And the more interesting question, related to the OP, is whether McD is the right coach to get Allen a ring.

I don't see McD ever changing his coaching philosophy even after going from DC to HC and in his current role, after having a franchise QB.  I think he's always wanted a balanced run-pass offense that focused on ball control and a strong defense.  He seems uncomfortable with a franchise QB and the importance of passing the ball.

Reminds me of the times people ask why HC's, particularly in the NFL, refuse to adapt their personnel to scheme upon taking over.

Because deep down McD is about avoiding risk and the defensive side offers that much more than offensive focused football, particularly the passing game.  And that's why I don't see McD as the coach who gets them to the promised land.

  14. The statistical analysis leaves out some variables, namely, that not all WR2's are playing with a QB of Allen's caliber.  Setting that aside, Gabe's 2023 season isn't much different than 2022.

Last year, he was targeted 93 times in 16 games or less than 6 per.  Through 6 games this season, it's 5 targets a game.  His yards per game are similar (57 this year versus 52 last).

If a guy giving you, on average 3-4 catches per and 55 yards is your low expectation, then great.  It shouldn't be for fans who would like to see Josh have a player who isn't pedestrian in the passing game.  Nor, is the short sample catch rate increase enough to overcome that lack of production.

Because for some reason, he's not getting much attention in this offense despite no one threatening his apparent role as their 2nd option in the passing game. That's a question to consider in this debate, which is pretty much settled by now.

I think we also have to account for the fact, that under Daboll, we had an inferior oline, mainly both guard positions. Teams knew we couldn't run it, and we still had success passing the ball at will.  I think the front office is to blame as well. They have continually failed to replace the Beasley position. They have invested more on TE (Knox big contract) and a 1st round pick on Kincaid, than on WR. Where is our return investment?

So much on offense under McBeane has been disorganized, even since Josh ascended into a franchise QB. Because for as much as this HC and GM were cited for re-establishing order into the organization after Rex and Doug, they don't seem to understand offense years into their tenure.  From establishing a scheme/identity, staffing it, finding the coordinator, and adapting in-season...little has improved aside from finding the QB and trading for Diggs.

I get the sense McD likes playing super DCoord now and abdicates offense even more to the OC than he did when Daboll was here  That is, until something like last night happens and then he's asking questions.  Can't have it both ways as a HC.
