  1. A month ago that statement would have been true, and it may be true again when it matters in 1-1/2 months. As of today, Congress sits w/ a 18% approval rating and many 1st term Congresscritters are nervous. Most of those 1st termers have a D next to their name. After the debates, things may swing back in the D's favor, but right now the House is in play.
  2. In the House, EVERY seat is up for election. At this moment, control of the House is in play. Whether that will still be true ~50 days from now remains to be seen. In the Senate about 2/3rds of the seats that are up are currently Republican held.
  3. What is this "heat" thing you are referring to? It hasn't broken 90 in Ra-cha-cha since May.
  4. In your purely hypothetical scenario, which of the TEN missile defense missile launchers do you expect to accidentally shoot down a Russian MIG? My money's on #7.
  5. What, no love for Bailey Quarters (Jan Smithers)? Sorry, I'm too tired / lazy to find a pic. Of the ones you listed, I'd have to go for either Alyssa or JLH (hey it's fearless leader's B-day, happy B-day SDS).
  6. That's KOharskI. Not that anyone on a Jags message board would realize the typo. And, technically, IIRC, the quote was "have another donut, you fat pig."
  7. If you AND Deb are morally opposed to the McCain/Palin ticket, I might have just decided who I'm voting for. (I'd already decided who I'm not voting for.)
  8. Yeah, he was only 30 years off on what would be the "Al Franken decade." I don't fully understand why, when there are so many people that are actually funny that lean to the left, that people support/follow AF. "Because gosh darn it, he's good enough, he's funny enough, and he just gets it" is as near as I can figure that people support him. Please enlighten me on what it is that makes him more relevant than Tom Davis (who was a far better comic IMHO). He was, IMHO, annoying in '79 and he's still annoying today. Deb, please explain what it is that you find humorous about the man, and maybe I can help you out w/ PJ O'Rourke.
  9. Well, why should we only turn South America against us, when there is a much greater world out there?
  10. Only if you include the SS money coming into the treasury which had already been allocated to meeting future obligations. If you look at that as a normal person or business would, you would have to say that there still was a deficit. You should not count money that you already plan on spending as being available. (No, no, I can afford the $500k mortgage on my $30k job; I'll just set up an interest only, 5 year balloon payment plan, that should work. )
  11. The Eulers didn't have strong support prior to Bud Adams moving them to the Volunteer State. Unless Pittsburgh or Dallas was coming to town, a local grocery chain routinely bought out the last 4-5k seats. And that's in a stadium that held low 60k for football and w/ a team that went to the playoffs 7(?) consecutive seasons and in the 4th largest city in the US. I agree w/ you though that it's sad the other cities had to lose teams (at least for a few years).
  12. Hindsight being 20/20, it would have been better that he begin filling the SPR when prices began to dip below $18/barrel; which would have had the dual effect of increasing the SPR rather inexpensively and delaying OPEC getting serious about maintaining their quotas. When oil was in the low $20's OPEC didn't seem to have much resolve; when it fell to ~$12, they got serious. Prices still would have eventually gone up due to increased demand in Asia, but possibly not as much and most likely not as soon. (Which also would have had the side benefit of keeping some money out of the pockets of Chavez and Putin.)
  13. It shouldn't be an issue in Jersey, but it might be a problem in the other 49.
  14. Last time I checked it was Obama vs McCain. But continue to make this Obama vs Palin and continue to wonder why the polling goes against where your guy "should be".
  15. I don't think I can ever forgive them for buying up and closing Two Pesos. THAT was VERY good Tex-mex fast food. TC was good. I miss 2P. (But at least I still have Mighty when I feel like driving an hour.)
  16. Eh, he could probably be there in an hour.
  17. Oh, come on, that Fish game where Ricky had 2 long runs and then the snow started falling and he and his teammates ran for the bus was one of the most fun games I've ever been at. "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow." We were in about 8" of snow by the time it was over and it was great.
  18. The election was in '94, but the Republicans didn't take control of Congress until '95.
  19. Which brings to mind a classic "Willy & Ethel" comic strip. Ethel is looking strangely at Willy standing with pie all over his face and shoulders. Willy's response to her quizical look was "part of me said 'duck', but the other part said 'what if it's blueberry'?" That Joe Martin cracks me up. (Eh, so my sense of humor is warped. Whatever.)
  20. The Republicans controlled the House and Senate in 1993?
  21. Did I just get "Crayonzed"?
  22. W/ nearly 2 months to go, I don't see either side burying themselves just yet. There is plenty of time for both sides to get plenty nastier and for people to forget whatever it is you are referring to.
  23. I'd like to see term limits, but I'm not sure how to deal w/ "lifetime staffers". Maybe Yellow Lines has some thoughts on that one.
  24. Wait a sec, is this thread about Creationism or Michael Moore and Gustav?
  25. Hmmmm, $0.02 flag or $1.00 slice? Can't say that's a particularily tough decision. Now, if the pizza was from Domino's and the flag had pepperoni on it, the choice gets a lot tougher.
