  1. Not a fan of Lucas Oil Stadium... at least from an exterior design perspective. It just screens rust belt. I seriouly want Buffalo to push the envelope on design and do something far more modern. I also believe we have no choice but to build a stadium with a dome; as the budget for a facility without a roof just doesn't make sense. You repilcate the Ralph and it will sit empty and unused more than 90% of the time.

Buffalo needs a new convention center.. The Buffalo Bills will need a new stadium. It's time to marry the two and get it done; and done right. Who knows if Buffalo will ever host a Super Bowl. I personally do not care. But what I do hope we replicate from the Lucas Oil Stadium is the way they incorporated OTHER THINGS TO DO around the stadium. Indianapolis hit a home run when they hosted the Super Bowl and no doubt the city will host another one in the near future.

But Buffalo needs to thing big - take advantage of its opportunities to help put this city back on the map. I know it will cost money - no matter how modern and cutting edge - but so will Lucas Oil Stadium.

My only concern - how do we build something that has greater shelf life than those dome stadiums that have already been replaced within 20-30 years of life? Buffalo cannot afford to build a new stadium now and then 25 years later. So, the design will need be modern. clean lines, and tastfully done.

Nice - but no thanks. I think Detroit when I see this:

  2. A couple of thoughts:

1.) Why break this news now? I do hope Ralphie is ok....

2.) Regardless of who buys this team; the world will be falling for many people on here and the new owner will mean the end of the world for them

3.) JK has said for years he has things lined up; for all you know JBJ is part of this....

4.) I would still be shocked to see RWs heirs sell to a group that would move them team; yes money talks but he has been unwilling to move them so far - why would he just sell his legacy off? His Wife did a lot with the Bills, his daughter worked for them and there is at least one family member who works for them (I forgot her name)

  3. It's true we are all tired of hearing about the Bills and Sabres leaving (I'm honestly not worried about the Sabres given the Pegula investment) - this is a good time to mention that the latest Erie County budget includes funding for a new convenetion center study. (yes, another study).

    • Using $500,000 in capital costs to study if Erie County needs a new convention center and where it should be located. The study is part of an overall review of Visit Buffalo Niagara and the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center by an advisory committee headed by Hurwitz & Fine Partner Dan Kohane. The study and report is due in early 2015.

Let's not forget that new lease with the Bills also includes funding for a new stadium working group to explore that potential for the construction of a new facility in the future:

    • ...this new agreement establishes a New Stadium Working Group that will consist of representatives of the Bills, the County and the State to explore the potential for the construction of a new stadium in the future, along with a dedicated fund for future development and planning.

I think it's critical that the Buffalo media not lose sight of these ongoing studies - and would even make sense if these two committees worked together - as a convention center / stadium combo is likely the only viable way to get this huge project funded.

  4. It doesn't, but you have to consider what hotels, restaurants, and other infrastructure are in the area to attract and support big events for the facility to be viable and sustainable in the long term.

I agree. But Buffalobud also just pointed out three of the top seven media markets in the United States. Of course they can build stadiums anywhere they want as money is really no issue.

In order to make this happen in a state like NY and a city like Buffalo - the second poorest in the nation - you have to find multiple uses for the facility in order to make it work.

Build it downtown or in Niagara Falls.

Another stadium in Orchard Park would be a colossal mistake.

  5. Not impressed; one bit. A bit too clunky and I predict it will look like an eye sore in 20 years.

I think I found their inspiration:

I was in Houston last month - drove past the Reliant Stadium. Gotta admit - I was surprised at how dated it's already starting to look... I was also surprised to see that the Astrodome is still standing.

Based on that - I was a proponent of a dome stadium - but now I am thinking twice about what it should look like. If it looks anything like the Vikings new stadium - I won't be happy.

I still like this proposal - but worry about the shelf life:

But I think we can agree - this has to go:

It's time to build all new for the Bills... these renovations are nothing more than lipstick on a pig.

Should there be a domed stadium and a new convention center in downtown Buffalo’s future?Discussion on such development has come to the forefront in recent weeks, intertwined from the new 10-year lease negotiated with the Buffalo Bills for Ralph Wilson Stadium. As part of the new lease, New York state and Erie County officials will be working with the Bills on the possibility of replacing Ralph Wilson Stadium, which will be 50-years old when the extended lease expires. Two Erie County Legislators — Chairperson Betty Jean Grant and Tim Hogues — have set a community meeting to talk about the feasibility of building a domed stadium and convention center, perhaps together. The meeting is set for 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21 at Erie Community College’s downtown campus, 121 Ellicott St.The meeting is designed to get some basic community input.

I had so many problems with the 550 app that I went to TuneIn. Cannot recommend it enough. It's great.

    Question about TuneIn:

I paid and downloaded the app. Works great with one exception.

I cannot simply make a phone call while the App is running. I have to close it out and then make the call; unlike with the WGR app.

Anyone have this issue with their iPhone?

  9. Run, don't walk, away from that PoS app. The worst programmed, the worst designed interface ever constructed. It is terrible beyon belief.

Get tunein and save yourself from wanting to drive off a bridge trying to deal with that PoS.

What's the difference between the free and paid TuneIn App?

  10. Thanks to the WGR ap, I...

LOL.... EXACTLY - I remove my earbuds everytime during commercials. I'm going to download tunein NOW!

  11. it's all the same really. In fact there is really only one source for the stream, WGR. Apps like TuneIn just aggragate them.

No, the commericals are not the same that are aired over the radio v the app. When I'm home in Buffalo Niagara - I play the app and listen to the radio at the same time just to hear the differences and they are never the same.

Run, don't walk, away from that PoS app. The worst programmed, the worst designed interface ever constructed. It is terrible beyon belief.

Get tunein and save yourself from wanting to drive off a bridge trying to deal with that PoS.

I agree. But I do listen to WGR's sister station here in Boston using their app - WEEI - and its just so much better. As a matter of fact, I don't understand why Buffalo's Entercom station is sooooo bad compared to Boston's... I know, different markets but the quality of production, apps, even commercials are better in Boston than Buffalo. Entercom Buffalo is so stuck in the past.

  12. As someone who lives outside of WNY, I love the WGR550 app. I listen to it all day while they broadcast local sports talk.

However, the commercials are painful! They play the same 5 commercials over and over again.

I don't care about the little girl and her questions about Earth.

I don't care if your child's car seat is the right size for your child. (The most annoying commercial).

I don't care if you're acting like an adult - "Am too, Am too" - while you attempt to prove you know your finances.

I don't care if you "feed the pig."

Anyhow, I know I will get flamed for bichin about this but I know I can't be the only one who cringes when these commercials are aired...

  13. Didn't want to start a new thread but I was looking into what the Vikings might do in Minnesota and came across an interesting article on the costs associated with retractable roofs and sliding glass doors...

Bart Riberich, president of Minnesota-based Uni-Systems, which designed retractable roofs at the Cowboys, Lucas Oil and other stadiums, estimated that going from a fixed-roof plan to a retractable roof would require at least an additional $25 million.

The cost for a retractable feature alone, like a door or window, would be more like $5 million to $10 million, Riberich said.

In addition to retractable roofs in both stadiums, the Cowboys facility has large moving glass doors at both end zones and Indianapolis has a large window that opens toward the downtown business district, said Bryan Trubey, design principal at HKS.

Take a look if you're interested... also, the new stadium concepts designed by HKS in Minnesota look good.
