According to tsn.ca, the Flyers are over the salary cap right now!
They should be allowed go over the cap regardless. TSN says babber mouth Roenick will be shipped to LA to bring them back under the cap.
Would be nice to at least read that we lost out in biding for someone. However, I haven't read one creditable rumor about the Sabres and free agency.
Technically they're not over. The cap is not on payroll, it's on total money spent over during the season. A team, like say Philly, could have a $40 million payroll for the first half of the season and then unload $4 million worth of players for the second half and they'd be ok. The same could go for a team with a $28 million payroll for the first half of the season. They could add up to $20 million worth of payroll for the second half and still not go over the cap.
I saw this mentioned in an article last week, but I have no idea where it was.

Yeah, Toronto and Ottawa have really been going crazy lately.
2/5th of the division has made a couple of moves and all of a sudden everyone in the Northeast is "racking up guys like crazy" except Buffalo?

Since the 00-01 season. So that's 3 straight years without playoffs, not including the strike season.
The Bucky Gleason article provides a good justification for DR's quietness the past 2 days, but not if he plans to go into the season with a $23-$28 million payroll! There's a difference between being responsible with money allocation and being just downright cheap.
There's going to be some very good players after this initial rush of overpaying ends. The Sabres should be able to get some of those guys for much less than they'd have to pay right now. The season doesn't start next week, so there's plenty of time. Sit back, relax. The team will make some moves.
Remember what happened in the NFL 4-5 years after they started using a salary cap? A bunch of teams found themselves in cap hell. With some of the deals that have been signed over the last 2 days, we're going to end up seeing the same thing from a few teams in about 3 years.

Two days in and its all doom and gloom. I'm so sick of this. The fans in this city are always looking for something to complain about.
Me, I'd rather sign a couple solid players instead of signing one $5 million guy and then a bunch of veteran minimum guys.

My simple answer to the question is "too much". I don't know why the beer got to me tonight. I really didn't have all that much.

I guess every NBA draft lottery is fixed since the actual lottery isn't televized.

The more I think about it, I really believe that the Sabres did things like this just to keep their name in the news. They wanted the fans to think "hey, this team is really trying to improve the game".

I'd love to see a list of the people who won those tourneys that Jack finished 2nd or 3rd in. I'm guessing you'd see names like Palmer, Player, and Watson a bunch of times.

I'm getting pretty sick of people saying the fix is in. The worst part is when people think that they're the first to think of it. I guarantee right now that this thing will not be fixed. That doesn't mean that Crosby won't end up in New York though. I think he's going there no matter which team wins the lottery.

I'm pretty sure he hurt his leg this year while playing on that swiss team he was playing for. If you look at the stats labaatblue posted, he didn't play too many games. I've been searching for the story, but I can't find it. I'm sure someone here can back this up.

I thought I heard something about a leg injury. Anyone else hear something like that?

He also signed that deal so he could become an unrestricted free agent the next year. I forget how that ended. Where did he sign with the following offseason?

Any conversation about the most embarassing play in Bills history has to begin and end with the name Ronnie Harmon.

I'd love to see Weight centering a line with Vanek and Satan. That sounds pretty dangerous to me.

I noticed a few of you mentioned "if Satan is still around". Is he now a free agent? We should have the cap room to be able to sign him. I would be disappointed in the team management if he was allowed to leave. Although a soft non-physical player, he has a lot of ability at putting the puck in the net. Muckers and grinders you can alway find. Scorers is harder
He's a restricted free agent. The big question is if he's worth the amount of money he would want. Not only is he a soft player, his effort has also come into question. You have to wonder if the money could be better spent on one or two other players.
Personally, I want him to stay. I don't want to buy a new jersey.

just read that there's probably going to be a rule change against icing the puck on the kill. some of these new rules... wow.

There's too many ways around that. They'll just ice the puck anyway. If a guy desperately needs to get off the ice, he'll fake an injury.

In fact, it opens things up on the power play. What you'll find in college is that a team on the power play will hang a guy around the other team's blue line. The defense has to respect the hanger because there is no two line pass rule, so you really can't kill off a power play by holding the puck down in their corner. It makes the attacking team get the puck in faster and get set up. Power plays in the NCAA tend to be a lot more exciting than most NHL power plays.
It also makes the line changes after icing the puck on a penalty kill pretty risky. That hanger will usually stay on the side opposite the benches. The fresh skaters have to move pretty quickly from the bench in order to break up the play (assuming the pass connects).

Three balls out of 48 (6.25%) does not make me feel confident. If you want to talk conspiracy, I hate to say it, but this kid will go to the Leafs. Do you think the NHL was excited when Tampa Bay (!!!) beat a Canadian team for the Cup? If the fix is in, they will send the hometown boy to Toronto.
Crosby's from Nova Scotia. It will be a bit tough for him to play in his hometown.
Note: I don't know if he moved to a different area while young, making this post completely pointless.

Disagree. Get rid of 2-line passing prohibition and you will populate the NHL with 160 lb "you touched me! you touched me! types", and the wheeling of defensemen, the forwards lurking on the boards to get a crisp pass and then fire a quick pass to a center who skates through the defense will be no more.
Hockey is meant to be a hard-fought contest played among hard men who play hard for a single score, not a da-ding!-da-ding! video game.
They have already done enough rule changes that have put the league deeply into the can - make it an instant-jolly shoot-out and kiss it goodbye.
Try watching a few higher level college games. By higher level, I mean the elite teams. There is no 2 line pass rule there and it really doesn't hurt the game at all.
SABRES SIGN SOMEBODY I'VE HEARD OF!!

One more signing on the blue line and I think they could be in decent shape.
