1. Pardon my ignorance but what makes him better than KH in a veteran role ?

    584757

The fact that I've seen them both play, my opinion is that Volek could handle a starting job. Nothing more than watching them both play. That's it. I can't give you the "X's and O's ", just that I think Volek would a fine job from week 1-16. Holcomb being the perfect backup. I wouldn't call you ignorant for that.

  2. Your final statement does not follow from your logic. How will getting Cutler or any newbie help Ralph's win-now plan ? My personal opinion is that win-now plans patched together by short-term solutions are doomed for failure. A few years back, the Redskins loaded their roster with overpaid oldies and it did squat for them.

Answer me this - which veteran QB is out there that can come and really help us more than Kelly Holcomb can ? Kitna ? Garcia ? Brunell ?

I totally agree with Kelso's Helmet & a few others here - give JP a chance to compete. If he wins out the starting job, he will have made great strides towards his own development.

    .....Volek?

  3. Posts such as this should warrant a month long suspension from the board. Disgusting.

    584704

Why don't you start a poll asking that very question? That was an awfully arrogant statement. Please, feel free to disagree with someone, just get over yourself. It's akin to everyone agreeing with every post you've ever made. Or are you as brilliant as you make yourself out to be?

  4. god,  FALL can not get here soon enough to stop all this bull sh-- about JP , give the kid a chance

    584654

Is it that you can't stand a varied opinion, or is it that you think JP is that terriffic?

It's just a different view. Don't get so uptight about it. It's not that important.

  5. We are a testy bunch today.  :)

You see so many people are always saying on this board that JP is no good - but when you suggest a trade all of a sudden you have to get value or somebody in return who is as good or better then JP.

If you think JP is not going to be your QB of the future then this trade gets him off your payroll with something in return.  Maybe Fitzpatrick is a one game wonder? But you are not bringing him in with pressure to be the savior of the franchise.

Maybe Fitzpatrick is another Brady!  Who knows for shure at this point but I will say this much, he has a good arm and is a lot more mature and has better football instincts then JP does right now. JP has far better talent.

I do agree with most of you that say give JP another year but you do realise that if JP does what he did this year and gets benched again he will have no value to any other team. Everybody will just wait for us to cut him and then pick him up.

It's a hard decision. One that could make or break a GM and Coach unless JP becomes the franchise QB and does well.

I would make the trade and start from scratch. I would not want my job to depend on JP.  He is too risky.

    584599

We're on the the same page. I'd love to fortify our OL and bring in a Billy Volek type. I don't care that JP was selected in the first round. That means nothing. IMO, I just don't get "that" good feeling about JP. Obviously, others do and that's fine.

We can, and I'm certain we will, throw him into a competition and he might win it. If it's possible, I'd rather go with someone more established so we can hit the ground running. Just a different philosophy. That's all.

  6. What about this trade?

    To the Bills: Ryan Fitzpatrick

    To the Rams: future considerations

Fitzpatrick was a 7th round pick, with a sub-60 rating, ending the season with games of 58, 32, and 45.  His last game he went 10/24.  These aren't even JP numbers, why would we want someone even more raw?

If Fairchild thinks he can be a miracle worker with Fitzpatrick, then bring him in for nothing.  Or just wait and grab him after he gets cut in training camp.

    584494

Who cares where he was drafted? I'll take Fitz and a 2nd rounder and go with Holcomb. We'll fortify ourselves elsewhere. Hell put the right OL in place and then go get me Collins. The Raiders are bound to part ways with him.

  7. We might as well trade JP for Sage Rosenthal (sp?)  I mean he looked good in the one game he played too!

Sorry but I'm hard-pressed to believe that Fitz will be anything more than a career back-up.  Yes he lit up Houston but come on.  EVERYONE lit up Houston.

Lest we forget, JP torched Houston in his FIRST real start too.

This trade would be like trading a Ferrari with a flat tire for a Honda Civic that has good fuel effiency.  Let's just fix the flat tire first...

    584405

Who said Fitz had to replace JP as the starter? Grab a valuable extra 3rd rounder (or who knows...possibly 2nd is what I'd be asking) and play Holcomb, who I anticipate being better next year anyway. We've got options. The more I think of it, the more I like it. Guess I'm just not as sold on JP as many are.

  8. Thats is the dumbest thing I ever heard. JP for Fitzpatrick who wasnt even drafted and a 3rd round pick? The Bills would be getting ripped off.

Don't let the Fitz's first appearance with the Rams deceive you. The following week he went out and threw 4 picks if my mind serves me right.

For one it wont happen because its a crazy idea. Two if they did do it. I would totally flip out. JP has all the tools. He just needs time. My goodness some of you people are on crack and are way too impatient.

    584338

Oh right, he wasn't drafted so he couldn't possibly get any better. Considering this kid had virtually no preperation time, I'm not so sure he couldn't be adequate with the right OL and a coach already familiar with him. You don't have to like the proposal, but don't discount it because the kid wasn't drafted. Unless you see some unsubstantiated upside with JP, I would CONSIDER it. I'm not one that thinks JP is the "end-all" with or without the proper OL. All I know is that with the way this team sits, another #3 this year would look awfully good.

  9. St Louis -  3 rd round pick this year and Ryan Fiztpatrick QB.

    I would in a heartbeat.

Fairchild thinks Fitzpatrick can run his offense in the future. Holcomb can run it now.

    What do you think?

    584319

I like what I saw from him in spot duty last year. He's certainly smart enough, Harvard I believe. Add a 3rd in this particular draft you propose, and I could be swayed. Though, I'm not sure why St Louis would do this.

  10. Nalen is getting long in the tooth, but has been to multiple Pro bowls and still appeared to be playing at a high level this year. If we can't get Bentley, what about Nalen?

Also, how healthy is Mawae now? Anybody know? He's a UFA too, I think.

    583346

It's the Denver OL as a whole that is good. I think it's more the system than the player. Bring over the whole unit and now you're talkin'. :)

  11. I'll tell you something else...I think that Lendale White's draft stock will soar before April rolls around.  People might be looking at him the same way they saw Carnell Williams this year.  Reggie Bush may be the flashier of the duo, but White is the workhorse.  We could work out a trade-down with a team that's desperate to get him.

    582719

Agreed. I think White will be the best workhorse of the group coming out. Teams interested in him will want to move up right around #8.

  12. Not Culpepper.  First of all, he has a huge contract.  Second, give Losman a chance behind a decent line before you all crucify him.  Did you see the game Brady, Manning, and Plummer put up in the playoffs under pressure?  Brady and Manning are considered top drawer and Plummer had his best season but all looked shaken by having people in their face or at their feet.  Well, Losman (or pick any Buffalo QB, including Bledsoe) faced pressure on just about every snap behind that line.

Build the line and then judge Losman.  And maybe McGehee also for that matter.  It just may turn out that a couple of OL could actually make a huge difference.  Say what you will about TD (and I agree he totally neglected the line) but he didn't leave the cupboard bare regarding young skilled positioned players (Losman, McGehee, Evans, Parrish, Everett, Reed).  Now get a line and see if they have the talent to justify their draft position.

    582879

Ooooooo.....you were doing so well until you mentioned Reed. I don't recall our OL slapping the ball out of his hands. :)

  13. I voted Childress because I wanted the HC to have more of an offensive influence, but none of these guys jumps out at me. I'm more interested in learning who our coordinators will be. Minus Payton and McCarthy, we could have hired any of them and then predicate my opinion, not just on the HC hiring, but on the staff as a whole.

  14. Seriously...is there anyone that was available, with head coaching experience, with a winning career record, who could walk on water, bring in free agents, solve world hunger, stop global warming, teach JP to be Brett Favre, and create lines of steel out of the guys at the Big Tree Inn that was going to be welcomed with open arms by more than 85% of Buffalo fans???  You guys shot down every candidate this year for every possible reason save maybe shoe size, then again Mike Sherman does have some small feet.

    579655

I believe there is. Wade Phillips......the fact that he looks like Bob Newhart with a hyperactive thyroid is troubling, but I'd go back to him over DJ anyday.

  15. Maybe because it'd be smarter for them to get a franchise back with the fourth pick overall. The Jets know that one of the OTs like Winston will fall to the in the second. Do you think one of the top runningbacks will be there for them in the second round? Didn't think so, I rest my case.  :o

    574269

Maybe it's smarter. Maybe not. My philosophy differs in that I'd rather have the stud OL that would enhance the game of a "lesser" RB. As opposed to say.....WM

and ....well......you get the point. Certainly more than one way to skin a cat, I guess.

  16. The Jets will pick a runningback with that pick (Williams or White). They need a threat there and they don't have the cap dollars to get a free agent RB. Everyone knows Curtis' time has run out. No way do they pick an offensive lineman with that first pick.

    574169

Exactly. Why would a Shi$$y team, that has needs everywhere, start with the OL?

    Doesn't make sense. <_<
