1. They're hunting for Bob Lanier?

    349540

 I live in the Springfield, MA area about 10 minutes from the BB HOF. I haven't been in some, oh, 8 years or so. Anyway, they have on a pedestal, a bronzed (real size 22) sneaker belonging to BL. Every winter I call and ask the director of the HOF if I can borrow Big Bob's Boot so I can take my girls toboggining (sp?). Needless to say, the answer is always no.

  2. Even if the market is clear about the price for Henry (which it isn't actually. the key top the market is that the same player can have have a totally different value for different teams.  Was Peerless worth a Bills first round choice in 2003? Not on your life, he was not our #1 WR because we had Moulds and we had a #3 Reed who had been productive in his rookie year. We had used a second rounder to acquire him and if the Bills had traded even a 2004 1st to replace PP lost to FA Bills fans would have screamed like Jets fans during a draft.

However, PP was clearly worth a 1st to AT because they had no real #1 WR and had invested heavily in Vick. Arthur Blank cinched the deal for Buffalo by publicly declaing PP had great value and that he would spend what it took to get him.

PP's market value was different for different teams and that is how deals get done.  Reality revealing that PP was not even a #1 quality WR and the Bills getting WM with ATs pick and him having a tremendous year last year is what has made this an outstanding get by TD.

TSW posters really are making a huge error in acting as though there is some static value for a player based on draft choices.  TD has done a great job in assessing player value for trade/contract purposes not so much in his assessing whether a player will make it or not (this is important, but due to injuries and other uncontrollable factors who knows really what the future holds) as though he has some absolute value, but he has proved to be prettty good at assessing what the market value is for players and positions of other teams and acting boldly to take advantage.

The AT read was an easier one because Arthur Blank made it easy. However, he acted boldly by tagging Price and even more boldly by picking WM.  His reads on the Campbell trade and moving Gary were not bad either.  it has actually been the draft where TD has made some extraordinary reads merging his knowledge of the Bills needs based on his plan with is knowledge and estimates of others needs.

    1. Picking a WR eith our 2nd pick in 2002 when most thought our need would lead us to pick a DL player and then trading up at the last minute to pick a DE on the phone with the next draft choice was a great read of the market. Reed has disappointed after his first year achievements and Denney got a rough start but allowed us to go with only 3 DEs last year, but the read of the market was great.

    2. Seeing that with our 2003 1st choice we could pass on taking our more immediate need of a DE because the run on DEs prior to our pick meant that Kelsay (seen as a 1st rounder by some pundits) would still be there when our 2nd choice came around was a great market read.

    3. The Bills overarching success in signing UDFAs like Peters or Baker the last couple of years which has paid off in a high performance ST last year looks like a great job of reading the market.

TD ain't perfect  by a long shot (if he was we would be in the SB or have a much better record under him he made a serious error in choosing GW and in restructuring the Bledsoe deal and it cost us). However, the one thing he clearly realizes is that the market varies alot from team to team and good trades and draft performance comes from reading these differences.

In addition to the error of assuming some illusory static value for a individual player, the idea that the market is set for Henry ignores the fact that the market changes a lot with events or time.

An example is the Jags correctly assigned no market value to Henry originally, but as their medical exams have revealed questions about Taylor's health, the market value for making Henry a Jag seems to have gone way up.

Right now there are three spots seemingly which fit Henry and his all important contract situation:

    1. The Titans have a likely RB need due to injury Henry appears to be one of the most hopeful and marketable choices due to his contract status and achievement of a Pro Bowl.

    2. The Jags say they are not interested which is the correct thing to say if you are interested but it probably does not matter whether they are as it leverages the Titans to make a deal or they may lose out.

    3. The Bills themselves remain a potential landing ground for Henry as though Henry has cut ties the Bills have not.  Since Henry has little choice but the Wickey option if the Bills choose to keep him and like even Wickey in the end money talks this one is still a live option which allows TD to sit and wait.

    4. Once camp starts, the potential for RB injury increases (even for WM) and it is far from certain but not unlikely that new markets for Henry will be created and the Bills may be able to get someone to pay through the nose.

The market for Henry is not set at all.

    349581

Goodness gracious, FFS. That one tired me out.

  3. Had we offered up TH at THAT time, we probably would have gotten a 1st for him.

But at THIS time, RB's are a dime a dozen. The draft was so rich at the position, that most teams filled their needs with guys like Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Cadillac Williams, J.J. Arrington and others. Then you have Shaun Alexander and Edge James perhaps looking to be moved and Ricky Williams coming back to the Dolphins who spent the 2nd pick overall on a RB.

Supply and demand mon ami. There's a whole lot of supply and not a lot of demand. This year's offer of a 4th is like last year's offer of a 2nd or 1st.

    349523

You couldn't be more wrong. The drafted RB's have come and gone. Jags and Titans are already in need. Others will be too. JUST BE PATIENT. As far as James and Alexander, they're too expensive which makes TH more valuable. TH can be had for much less than those two.

  4. I simply disagree with your assessment of Henry's talent. To me he is a stupid one demensional runningback who can not mentally or physically grasp the complixities of modern offenses. Just my opinion - but it seems it is the opinion of the rest of the league as well.

    349506

Desperation due to injury will change the opinion of other GM's. You gain NOTHING trading him now, or more accurately, not as much. Just be patient. We'll get exactly what we want. Regarding TH handling the "physical complexities", you're dead wrong. He's already proven that. He may be dumber than a stump, but don't tell me he can't handle it physically.

  5. If they can up it to a 4th with incentives that could make it up to a 2nd based on performance, than you can't pass on that.

    349463

Too many variables. You lose nothing waiting for the right situation to come along. Perhaps another team loses it's back and might be willing to deal a 2nd rounder. You never know what value another team might place on TH with their backs against the wall. Especially with other interested bidders out there. Bottom line, we're getting at least a 3rd, maybe more.

  6. Westbrook signing a 1 year tender doesn't eliminate Philly from the Henry sweepstakes.  They still need a between the tackles runner with or without Westbrook.  Plus, Westbrook is probably gone next year and Moats was drafted as his replacement.  That being said, Philly is about the last place I'd want to see Henry as he would make their team much better.

    349002

Who cares where he goes. Moving him gives us an oppurtunity to get better be it a draft pick or player. Is hell looking for a RB? Travis can go there for all I care.

  7. He could do a better job at hiding though. Its one thing for him when he is the sole focus of Parcells attention as he was in practice versus gameday when reality forces eveyone to recognize the QB is merely just a cog in the wheel and not even the primary focus for winning the game when the D or ST is on the field.

Also, there is a difference between having the prime focus on the practice field yelling "just throw the damn ball" at you when you go into your familiar pat-pat-pat-sack than having him as one very loud voice among 70,000 screaming fans.

I can certainly see how Sundays became a plesant day off for Bledsoe. However, as when Parcells HC'ed a Bledsoe QB'ed team to the SB it was all the yelling during the week which got the team there.

The MM alarm clock played a riole in almost getting the Bills to the playoffs (though ultimately it was the inability for Bledsoe to play well enough to overcome the deficit of the D allowing a scrub to rush for over 100 yards, Lindell missing a chip shot, and nate Clements giveth but Nate Clements taketh away which were the reversals MM woulda/coulda/shoulda done to make the outcome different last year.

The irony here is that if getting older makes it easier for Bledsoe to let go and not try to do things he is not capable (and never has been) of doing, then the 'Boys may actually do a lot better this year.

    348775

I've seen this movie already. :D The rise and fall of DB.

  8. Who's more overrated, Price or Vick???  You need a QB to throw you the ball once and awhile...

    347901

Vick. MUCH more is expected. I know the contract Peerless signed says he should be an "elite" player, but I didn't think he was worth that money. Having said that, I didn't think Price would be THIS bad.

  9. I am also amused/horrified at the cut and dried simplistic way folks seem to want to see the Bills kicker issue handled.

I agree that Lindell's miss on a chipshot FG he should have made last year against Pitts simply validated a sense that the Bills could profit a lot from having someone even adequate as an FG threat. It emphasized that mostly we were probably lucky that by pure chance we have not needed him to kick a gamewinning FG during crunchtime the last two years. The fact that MM seems to have lost any confidence in him over 45 yards is simply not NFL acceptable performance for a kicker.

This being said, it is also rediculous that most fans seem to be so dazed by his placekicking failings that they seem to refuse to understand the fact that he has done extraordinarily well as a kickoff performer.

Like it or not, a kicker MIGHT be called upon any week to win or lose a game for you with a last minute kick.  However, he DEFINITELY WILL be called upon each and every week to kickoff for your team and those kickoffs will do a lot to determine the fate of your team that week.

Like it or not, Lindell was simply flawless in the kickoff game last year.

Placekicking is high profile and success/failure is measured easily in you getting 3 points or not.  However, simply because kickoff skill is more difficult to measure that does not mean that it is easy (this is particularly true in the dicey variable all-important winds at RWS.

Tackling plays a lead role in the quality of the kickoff game. However, in order to cover kicks well it is critical that a kicker kicks the ball when, where and with the hangtime the tacklers expect every time in order for them to be in the right position to make the tackle.

The Bills has no (by this I mean nada, zero, none, bupkus) TDs on KOs against them or even long returns last year.

Luck was a major part of this as the difficult to predict RWS wins are quite likely to have the KO go off plan at least a couple of times per season.  However, the fact is that the Bills were essentially flawless in this part of their game last year and Lindell deserves a big part of the credit (with tackling, luck, etc) for this achievement.

Just because Lindell was great on KOs (an equally if not more important though less vexing part of his job as placekicking) does not mean he is also great at placekicking. In fact on the contrary.  However, just because he did not produce placekicking does not nullify the fact he was incredibly valuable in the kickoff game.

Am i satisfied with Lindell as our kicker? No!

Am I willing to force myself to be comfortable with him as our kicker? Yes, unless there is a better alternative.  I see none so far.

The new kicker needs to excel at not only the placekicking game but also the kickoff game.  Doug O'Brien has not even excelled at placekicking having missd a variety of PAT and other chipshots. the fact folks were interested in him speaks only to their level of desperation and not him being a better alternative than Lindell.

Fair-haired rookies like Nugent or Payne are interesting but essentially unproven at mastering the pro kickoff game. Nugent interested me but mostly because I put such low value on draft picks that his long PK ability intrigued me enough that I endorsed taking what I see as taking a flyer on him in the 2nd round.  However, we are probably better off that he was gone. We will see how Parrish does.

Lindell should get competition and if he is beaten out fine. However, his improvement last year statistically from his horrendous production in 2003 gives us more hope than taking a flyer on some unproven replacement.  His hitting two 45+ FGs taken off the scoreboard by Bills TOs does not count in reality but does provide some hope as well.

I have no problem with trying to make it work with Lindell unless something better comes along. Folks do not need to make the case that Lindell sucks as a placekicer. We know that.

They need to make the case that their proposed new kicker will make the grade as a placekicker, kickoff guys, and onside kick artist. I see no one where there is a good case made about that player.

I always enjoy a post from you, FFS. Such as this one. As I scroll down a thread and see your name, I've learned to do a couple of things before I proceed to read your posts. First, I hit the john. Second, I make a delicious sandwich and uncap a cold drink. I enjoy both your posts and my snack together, because I fear either hunger or a urinary tract infection will ensue due to "holding it" if I read your post prior to these actions. I say this with the utmost respect and admiration.

  10. We can talk about how TD got us out of cap hell. We can talk about the brilliant move of turning PP into WM. Or, conversely, we can talk about the failure that was GW and the fact that the Bill's record has been subpar. Bottom line. It will ALL come down to TD moving up in the 1st round in '04 to draft Losman. TD's tenure in Buffalo, however long, will be based on JP's success. Period.

  11. I wanted Nugent here if he fell to us. The pisser? How many close games will he decide whenever we play the Jets? It appears both teams (Bills, Jets) will be competing at the same level. One team not that much better than the other. Nugent will certainly boom some game winners. Hopefully not at our expense.
