  1. I've avoid here since Ralph passed. It just made me really sad. I don't give a crap about the future. I've loved hearing all the stories of what a great guy Ralph was. I'm sad because I don't think he got his proper due while he was alive. He kept a franchise in a dying city where a lot of people would have left. He certainly had his faults as an owner but as a man, he was as good as it gets. God Bless you Ralph and I feel we have a special season coming up to honor you. Thank you for everything!!!

He was inducted into the HOF, and I'm glad he had a few years afterwards to enjoy the honor. Better than having it awarded to him posthumously. So, in that sense, he did get his due (at least as a league founder).
  2. Davis, 30, will need to make more than $40 million just to deliver a small return on Fantex's investment in him.

Davis has already had his big 2nd contract payday. How is he supposed to make $40 Million plus now that he is 30 yrs old? He can probably play for 5 more years, but the gigantic payday has likely already occurred.

What a strange business model - it must be geared toward gamblers.

  3. I think we can agree Brian Moorman was a fantastic punter for the Buffalo Bills however I think its time has passed, we need to have a competition for the punting duties. No wasting draft picks on punters.

How about spending a draft pick on the best punter prospect you can find? Where else do you expect to find a punter - retreads and has-beens?

  4. sounds like a smart kid, 6th round? 7th?

The article mentions he is projected as a 3rd or 4th round prospect.

Or #1 overall in the CFL Draft.

The Ottawa Roughriders disbanded a couple years ago IIRC. I'm glad to see Ottawa will have football again, but a little disappointed they will not be called the Roughriders. Now they are the Ottawa Redblacks.

I always found it amusing that the CFL had 9 teams and two of them were called Roughriders. Well, one team was the Rough Riders (two words). I once heard an explanation that the Rough Riders from the East (Ottawa) were named for loggers who rode logs down the river. The Western (or Midwest) Rough Riders rode horses, moving cattle around.

  5. I provided a link, aren't you able to listen to it? Basically that my opinion has changed about Williams. Where as I was disappointed in this signing but now I have renewed hope. Gabriel said that Williams wasn't coming out of college and that he was hurt early in his first season with the Bears. In the 2nd year the Bears changed DCs and in turn there was a new OL Coach (Mike Tice) and their relationship never developed. Gabriel stated that Williams is a great kid, strong as an ox, extremely intelligent and now has an awful lot of experience up and down the OL and can play any of the positions except maybe for C. One other note, the Eagles wanted him after he played for Chicago but he chose the Rams because his wife has some non serious health issues and he wanted to stay as close to Chicago as possible. I think we are gonna be alright!

This is a good synopsis of the show. It can make you feel much better about OL Chris Williams.

GG also said he thinks only one QB will go in the top 10 picks.

Thanks, Tipster, for the link. Very interesting talk about Williams and Graham.

  6. It depends what happens above us. I think Matthews and Richardson offer value at 9, more so than Ebron although I've admittedly not seen a lot of him. The directions I don't want us to go in at 9 are:

I think you mean Robinson (Auburn OT). I think there is an OG later named Richardson.

RT at #9 may be a stretch, but these (Matthews and Robinson) are guys who could play LT if Glenn had an injury. That is the value of a great RT at #9.

I would prefer to go another way, Watkins or Mack if available. Don't know if Mosely is worth it at 9.

Trade down would be great, given the depth of this draft.

  7. Finally something my wife and I can watch together. The episode is currently airing, but will surely be replayed. Follows him as he looks for his first place in B-Low. Kid has a great personality and it really underscores his desire to be here and win. Watch and you can't help but want him to succeed.

Thanks, Jamie, for the heads up on this show. It really was cool to watch EJ looking for a place to live. Seems like a hard working young guy who will do all he can to improve his craft.

  8. You don't approach analytics in terms of looking for the answers to your questions, or what "I believe". Clients constantly struggle with this. Yes, if you go looking for an answer, you'll probably find it: because your methodology was designed to find it. This is doing it wrong.

Doing it right = You let questions, not answers, come to you. Questions, such as "Hey! There seems to be a connection between lowering the price of beer, and increased diaper sales, I wonder why?", is where the value of analytics becomes clear.

OC, I wanted to thank you for this great post a few weeks back. I have worked with SQL, and read about Hadoop, etc, but did not have a good understanding of analytics. You gave a great explanation of the concepts.

The phrase "required reading" came up in the Jim Schwartz post, and I think your posts in this thread qualified as required reading also.

  9. I've found a really great NY Times article from a few years ago when the Jets were prepping to play the Titans with Schwartz as DC. It's an insightful read.

    This is a great article.

I love the line that says: "Belichick regards Schwartz as one of the smartest coaches he has been around..."

THAT is the guy the Bills need at DC. I am very excited about this hire. I remember the impressive Titans defenses from those years JS was their DC.

  10. LOL....that's some funny ****.

Johnny Football stymied on opening drive. Wow

Same thing the other day when Teddy Bridgewater came out beating his chest, all full of himself. On the first or second drive, he gets sacked for a safety.

I had to chuckle. Of course, he went on to whip beat Miami like they were a high school team. Mostly, the U's OL stunk and their QB got buried repeatedly.

  11. Ok, that was mostly tongue in cheek. It's just frustrating that we do all the things we "needed" to do last off season, and still find ourselves at 6-10. What do we do next? Replace the cheerleaders?

When you have all-new everything (coaches, schemes, many players, even the GM), especially 3 green QBs, winning a lot of games in year #1 is not a reasonable expectation.

I know many of us had great hopes for an instant turnaround, but you have to be realistic.

You can see the foundation being built this year, and another offseason (hopefully, offense-oriented FA and draft), Bills will be competitive next year.

  12. He's a little before my time but I've seen cards of him and recognized him right away. Plus, his name always stood out to me.

And BTW, if you have only seen Nick on a card, the last name is pronounced like "micka-meyer".

I just looked him up (although I remember him playing with the Bills) and found out two things:

He was born in Bologna, Italy.

He was a member of the San Antonio Gunslingers (for you old USFL fans)
