Knife attack in school injures 22 children
Gene Frenkle replied to Fezmid's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Exactly. Why is the OP suddenly supporting a liberal pro-gun-control agenda I wonder? Grasping at straws, apparently. -
From your link, I crunched the numbers as best as can be expected from a Wiki article (since and including 1999): USA 79 School Shootings 60 Resulting in Fatalities Rest of the World 29 School Shootings 25 Resulting in Fatalities I'll wait for someone with more time on their hands to truly vet this statistic, but the numbers seem pretty consistent, proportionally at least. I believe it's time for serious change with regard to which types of weapons are made available to the public, who can obtain them and the process of obtaining them. See any difference in the attacked/dead ratio?

Feds seek ban on cell use while driving

Anyway, looks like Google will eventually put this issue to bed... -
Feds seek ban on cell use while driving
Gene Frenkle replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Actually, it's only a matter of opinion in the sense that some people seem to have a distorted sense of their ability to drive while texting or talking on a cell phone, hands-free or otherwise. http://www.aaafounda...utton=cellphone Despite your perception of your ability to drive while engaging in such activities, you are no different than anyone else. You are not a special snowflake. -
Fixed it for ya.

I look at the areas which have recently tried to pass anti-science legislation and draw my own conclusions based on that. I agree that there are many factors other than curriculum causing science education to fall behind in our country, but I favor an approach that at least offers our students a chance to learn science-based science. You simply cited a proposed lowering of education standards in LA as a reaction to fear of mass dropouts. While that does not seem like a good solution at all, it is really an entirely different issue altogether. I blame the public schools for my lack of proper debate skills. Their bad.

Whatever dude, I'm trying to engage in an intelligent discussion, not win a fight. Several states have tried to pass legislation over the years which subtly undermines the science of evolution by mandating "equal time" for other theories or the outright teaching of creationism as an alternative. Both of these things turn out to be dogmatic crap as far as fact-based science education goes, and thankfully, as far as most courts are concerned. Some recent anti-evolution "Academic Freedom" bills from our recent past: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_Freedom_bills Los Angeles represents a more civilized/educated part of the country? If you fail to make the connection between the restricting or perverting of the teaching of "undesirable science" in our classrooms and the lack of quality scientific minds this country puts out, well Jebus help us all...

Public school curriculum is defined at a state level. I'd imagine that the Federal Dept of Education exists to support the state education programs. Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning? Again with the global warming rant...lol The rest is retarded in many ways.
-
Why does everyone want to put all of the focus on global warming? I personally think that the science still seems to be out on that to SOME degree, so you're not necessarily a complete whack job if you express some skepticism about it. However, it represents only one example of many of what's being illustrated here. I guess it does have the unique distinction of apparently being the only one that any conservative here feels they have a chance of defending without looking like a giant douche.

It's about the fact that many people in this country disregard good science based on political or religious ideology. This willing ignorance embodies the low value we place on critical thought and fact-based skepticism. Most Americans only look deep enough to find evidence which supports their preconceived ideological world view and then plug their ears, close their eyes and scream really loudly until the bad contradictory stuff goes away. We're all guilty of this to some degree, but from what I've seen so far, the bigger your ego the more susceptible you might be. The sad part is, if you don't learn to think critically by a certain point in your life, you risk becoming set in your ways and incapable of change. Then the real point becomes: which parts of this mentality do we want to pass along to the next generation?

On the heels of all this "teaching intelligent design in science class" crap, I've read a lot about Texas recently, but I'm not 100% on that. Either way, Washington has little to do with it. I'm personally not in favor of the school boards in either of those states deciding what is taught. My hope for the future is for fewer paper textbooks and more updatable online content. That would drastically reduce the power held by any one state school board. I don't want to get into the global warming thing. Let's stick with something older and more sinister, like Evil-ution. Science should have nothing to do with politics, but this is the world we live in... You're pining for more Barry Sucks/I agree content?

When Does It Stop Being Bush's Fault?

Wow, that's harsh! Somebody piss in your cornflakes today? State school boards decide what is taught, with Texas arguably the most powerful of the 57. The Texas School Board largely decides the contents of the textbooks that will be used throughout the country. Not sure how Washington fits into the conspiracy.
