  1. All those "analysts" who made fun of the South's coaching can suck it.

Who made fun? I have been watching the recaps on NFL Network and they only had good things to say about Chan?

I agree, Mathews looks good. As for Miller, I was sickened to hear Nix say he is happy with our OLBs, but we need several ILBs. Miller plays outside so I dont think theyd look to him.

  2. We could still draft another QB if it was needed but i would rather have Fitz lead us for the next couple of years possibly and develop a QB rather than making any harsh moves .

I was actually thinking the same thing today. Though I have to admit that I didn't feel that way in the first half. If Fitz plays as well as he has been playing the past few weeks I think he is more than capable of being our QB in the rebuilding progress and we could focus on drafting some actual talent on Defense.

  3. I am completely bewildered by anyone who thinks we need a DL more than an OLB. That is just nuts. And oh, by the way, we just spent last year's 2nd and 3rd round picks on a DE and DT. Are you already calling them busts nine games into their careers?

OLB is THE #1 need on this team. There is no close second. Our OLB's are a joke.

The 2nd need is either TE or QB depending on how Fitz looks after a full season.

And if we're still playing a 3-4, then pass rusher == OLB

Thank you! Pass rush in a 3-4 is generated from the OLB position. Ours are terrible. We need 2 OLBs and a DE. The Defensive front 7 is weak because our LBs consistently get caught up on the line and don't generate a pass rush. Also, our ILBs need to do a much better job stuffing the run. I haven't been very impressed with Dwan Edwards this year so we could definitely use at least one DE, but not before round 3 IMO. If Luck is gone I would prefer they go OLB, QB, DE, RT

  4. I turned on the Cincy/Indy game at the exact moment his teammates were carrying him off and was wondering how the kicker got hurt

Though the incident is unfortunate, that visual was quite funny. An Olineman basically carried him off by lifting him by the horsecollar region of his uniform. Kind of looked like a puppy getting carried around by the scruff of his neck.

  5. I will be the first to eat crow about D. Bell... He is looking very good and has seemed to fix his habit for getting penalties...

+1. I thought he was too big of a project for us to undertake, but he is proof positive that you can still find gems in the rough. he has been playing VERY well. Well enough that RT is probably the only position of severe need on the Oline.

  6. Exactly. Kelsay is a solid rotational DE. Maybe we should stop blaming him for not being able to play LB and start blaming Edwards for asking him to.

I agree. I haven't liked him at LB, but he did well at his natural position, more proof that we didnt have the personnel to go to a 3-4. Good game.

  7. Or because the last time we ran a 3 - 4 we were top 3 in the league on D for several years. Or because you're far more likely reason - Russ Brandon is a marketing genius.

I can see that, but the conversion could have been handled better. Rather than scrap the 4=3 and taking what decent players we had on D and playing them out of position for most of the game, we could have simply installed more 3=4 packages and lessened the effect we have been seeing from people playing positions unfamiliar to them. If we had the LBs to switch to a 3=4, I would understand the overnight switch, but not with the personnel we have. It seems like the only person who theoretically would benefit from the switch is Maybin and he can't even play himself onto the active roster. I know schemes are generally an abrupt switch because a new coordinator comes in and wants to install their system, but in this case it may have been better to make the transition a 2 year process. Though that's just my opinion and I could be making little football sense for all I know.

  8. I wish it were that easy to make 'em stop. A little high current through the internet? But seriously, I just hope that the bitching here will help them be better human beings in real life rather than it being a reflection of a miserable existence.

Try not to let it drag YOU down, and ignore 'em in whatever way works best for you.

Your self-righteous pontificating managed to drag down what had been up to this point a largely constructive thread. I put it that it is posters like you, who respond with their gut and post knee jerk reactions rather than actually read what is said that drag down this board. My recommendation: if you don't like the thread, close it and read another one.

  9. The defense was fine. The offense should have scored more than 14 points against the Lions at home.

The defense was not fine, as evidenced by the score. Hypothesizing about what didn't happen is not constructive. Lindell should have made that FG, how about our ST should have scored a TD at home... it's all an exercise in futility.

  10. You may be right but why would Ralph be so loyal? He fired Polian. He ran out Butler. He fired Jauron and he left a lot of money on the table to do it. Why would he like Modrak so much, especially a holdover from Donahoe? If anyone needs a scapegoat it is Ralph.

Therefore, I think that Modrak is still around because Nix wants to keep him around.

I think that may be a bit misguided. though I agree fully that Ralph is THE reason we have been this bad for so long, Modrak is owed plenty of blame. Ralph, as dementia-riddled as he is, still likes to surround himself with "his" guys. I am now actually starting to understand why Mularkey quit, he knew coaching here with this organizational structure was a losing proposition because of Ralph. Modrak is a joke who has kept his job because of his friendship with Ralph. He has been here through Donohoe, Levy, the failed "no GM' phase with Russ Brandon and now Nix, to think Nix is the reason he is here is a bit naive. He has his job because of Ralph.

  11. No one is saying they look like "studs." Our drafing as obviously sucked in recent years. But hating on these rookies and hating on the coaches for not starting rookies is crazy. I think you are crazy for hating the coaching staff for not starting maybin. I don't care when he was picked. They had him play an entire game and he was just terrible and showed he didn't know what he was doing. He shouldn't be dressed and if you think the coaching staff should play a player like that, then you are just insane. The guy can't play. Maybe down the road, but I doubt it. Maybin can't play right now, and you suggesting he should play is terrible.

But there is nothing wrong with rookies not starting their 1st year. A lot of teams are not starting a lot of their rookies. Teaching the rookies to play is a hell of a lot better than having them play in a game when they have so much to learn. If you do that, then they learn the WRONG way to do it and they just suck.

After marv's 1st draft, almost every rookie was starting. That worked out SO well for us.

Agreed with almost all of this.

You should note I am talking about Modrak, not the coaching staff. They are correctly playing the best guys they can find.

  12. We should have kept Fewell......................... (I guess we won't see a positive Fewell thread this week)

The defense is improving, today I saw some interesting blitzes. I hate when we rush only 3 though, we make it real easy for the opposition.

Next week will be a great test for Edwards and the defense, hopefully they keep getting better.

Yes, they did improve a lot today.. by playing the majority of the game in 4-3. It took 8 games for Edwards to realize you can't shove a square peg into a round hole.

Agreed with almost all of this.

My original post was simply an observation of players who are even PLAYING. I am not complaining that Carrington, Troup and Maybin aren't starting. I AM concerned that we drafted Maybin in the 1st and Carrington in the 3rd and they can't even play their way onto the bench. You're blind if you think that Modrak doesn't have input as to who goes where on our draft boards. He may not make the ultimate call, but he is responsible for evaluating these guys and is involved in slotting them on our draft board. I've already stated that others have done a far better job than I could pointing out our draft failures. Simply ask yourself, who is that last 1st/2nd rd pick we've made that has been a big-time player for us under Modrak (who joined the team in '01)? Clements in '01 and Evans (whose value to us is overrated) in '04? That's 2 1st round picks in 10 years. You cannot whiff on first round picks. In that time we've had Gregg Williams, Mike Mularkey, Dick Jauron and Chan as Head Coaches, 0 playoff appearances and 3 1/2 General Managers. Like it or not, Modrak's failure to evaluate talent has put all the above mentioned ex-GMs and HCs in poor positions to succeed.
