  1. Is anyone still thinking DE in the first round? I was vocal about my support for both Coples and Upshaw but as usual forum members turn it into a polarizing issue because you can't like one guy without hating the other. I think I still prefer Coples over Upshaw but since the combine nobody is banging the drum for Upshaw anymore? Where is the love? Did the guy forget how to play football or do people think he might be a reach at #10 or a bad fit for our defense?

I really wish there was a world burner at DE this year that we could all root for to fall to us. Upshaw is a tweener. He really isn't the best fit for our system. I am leery of taking DEs who rely on one move to get to the QB. He looked terrible at the combine. I have doubts about his worth as a top 10 DE, he seems to be a better fit as a situational pass rusher out of the 3-4.

I don't put as much stock in the knocks on Coples. To me it just looked like he was playing not to get injured as he knew he'd be a high draft pick anyway. I can't say I fault him there. Anyone remember what happened to Mack from the Program? ;)

I'd venture to say Coples is the only DE worth taking at 10, except perhaps Ingram. He has the measurables and the size Buddy wants at the position.

I'd rather take Floyd at 10 considering the lack of a compelling option at 10. I'm not that crazy about the OTs likely to be available at 10. It all comes out to how you read the board laterally.

  2. I'm surprised people are so outraged at this. This has been going on around the league for years. If you don't think half the teams in the league don't have player funded "bonuses" maybe not for injuries, but for knocking someone out of the game, I think you're naive. Head hunting has been going on since forever.

  3. Although guilty of engaging in this discussion if only to point out the same thing....

Oh no, my hypocrisy has been pointed out! I WAS being serious when I asked the question though. I don't agree with the premise of the thread, but I'm bored and felt like getting some insight. I just wonder why the scenario is something to bring up? I'd rather be talking about players we could pick up realistically. I mean do you think really there is a snowball's chance in hell this happens? Cause if you do, then I'm just not reading the things you guys are reading and I'd like to know what I missed.

  4. Its not that he isn't a quality player....he is

We are changing to a FOUR THREE defense.....and the best players on that defense at this time are defensive tackles.....Brockers is TOO BIG to be a four three defensive end.

We need greasy fast pass rush from that defensive end position....not "push you back to the QB" players....

I am not going to say I know how this draft is gonna go but....

    - Dont understand why we would take a WR in the 1st with all of these free agents that could easily feel that #2 spot

    - OT is definately a possibility especially if Bell is not resigned....shoot...I would do it even if he is

    - Hairston would make the pro bowl as a RT

    - QB is probably not an option in the 1st

My guess is that is gonna be Melvin Ingram if he falls......or even Nick Perry.....but the 250 ish pass rusher is what is needed with this new defense.....Williams and Darius pushing the pocket and DE's straping the outside edges sacking QBs and stripping balls from behind.

Honestly, it's probably because we are an afterthought to the national media and they don't bother looking at our roster, listening to the things coming out of the GMs mouth and they simply don't care. I like Nick Perry a lot too, but I still think we go DL somewhere in the 2-4 rds. Why draft a WR? We don't have a decent #2 and the better FAs don't want to come to Buffalo. Listen, we all get upset when people make fun of the town and I love Buffalo, but why would someone go to Buffalo over Miami, NYC, or a larger mid-major city? The only option is to pay them more than anyone else and this FO is not going to do that. The only way to get top-level players on the Bills is to draft them and hope they fall in love with the city enough to re-sign.

Here's my Buffalo analogy: Buffalo is not the hot blonde that everyone in the room's eyes go to when she walks in. Buffalo is the decent-looking girl with a great personality who loves beer and sports and who you fall for after you spend more than 10 minutes talking to her. Problem is, free agency is more of a nightclub experience than a decent pub. Most players don't take the time to get to know the city unless they've got no chance with the hot blonde. One thing is for sure though, talking crap about our players and running them out of town a la Marshawn Lynch does not make this a more attractive city to play in.

  5. I know this is a message board and people express off the wall opinions. That said, I struggle to comprehend why people bother to take positions that have little or no relevance to what will actually happen in the real world. Does anyone think we are actually going to cut a player we just signed to an extension and who has received support from the FO and HC ad nauseum? Then, we argue over this proposition for 9 pages of posts, I really don't get it. I understand talking about even outlandish ideas, like signing Mathis (which I would love), which won't happen because we simply don't attract top-tier FAs. But why spend time discussing something that has less than zero chance at actually happening? How would this signing not set us back another 2-3 years? We'd have to give up at least two 1st rd draft picks and 2 more high picks as well. Fitz isn't great, but he's decent enough. We have ZERO pass rush, need 1 lb, 2 DEs, LT, WR2, another good CB. We can't and don't sign top level FAs, so how are we going to fill all those holes if we give up what is going to require at least 4 of our top picks over the next 2 years.

  6. I'll be very surprised if he goes that early (round 3) - but if he does, it'll most certainly be to the Bills because of Gailey's inexplicable passion for all things Georgia Tech.

Still, it would not suck to add a player with Hills speed, height, and hands to the Bills' WR corps - just don't think it'll happen before our 4b or 5a pick.

I've got a signature bet for you that says he gets drafted by the end of the 3rd rd. :flirt:

  7. This thread makes little sense. Of course there are players worth paying #10 money to. The OP simply assumes the team will go with what he perceives to be a position of need (OT, DE) rather than listening to what has already been said by the front office and allow for possible FA signings.

1- Nix said he likes the depth of the DL in this draft. He said there are many good DE's worth a pick in the 2-4 rds, but that may not get people "too excited." That does NOT mean that if they are really excited about a specific DE in the 1st and he's there, that we won't take him, but it sounded to me like they were assuming the guy they like would be gone by them.

2- Nix said he is looking to add 2 DEs, at least 1 CB, 1 WR, 1-2 OTs this offseason at a minimum. We all all but assured to get a top 2 CB or WR at #10 and #2 or 3 OT will likely be available. They will draft the highest rated player.

3- At this point in time you have to look at the draft board laterally as well as vertically. You can't take a player who you have rated #16 in the 1st because he's at a need position if you still have a top 10 guy left when you pick.

There are about 4 players I would be happy with at 10 who are not DEs or OTs. I think drafting on a needs-based approach is what made our team terrible in the first place.

  8. All the discussion on the board has centered around pas rushing DEs in the draft. I understand they are the ones who are expected to bring pressure in a 4-3, but I'm wondering about a Denver-esque utilization of an OLB. I'm thinking Perry, Upshaw, Cam Johnson and Irvin? Am I off base?

  9. #1 wideouts make money catches. He's blown at least three games in the last two seasons.

Do folks on this board think that a receiver with 4.7 catches is actually going to catch 90 or more balls and magically avg. more than 13 yds/catch?

Johnson is in a position of leverage on a new contract simply because the Bills have backed themselves into a corner and do not have a better option right now.

I don't have a problem with the Bills re-signing Johnson. Just not at the expense of the rest of the team. If they're going to spend big money on a receiver, I'd rather it be someone like Colston or Garcon.

I believe Stevie could develop to be a solid #1, but at present you're correct, he plays more like a very solid #2. I would be happy with Blackmon or Floyd at 10 (Blackmon much more so obviously). Reiff has the same problems Bulaga had- short arms. Considering I don't see a DE who is a clear-cut value at 10 playing DE in 4-3 (most of these guys are tweeners) and Kalil will be gone when we draft, I could very well see us going WR or CB at 10 and then picking up a DE/T in rds 2-3 where there is more value.

  10. I had read a similar article or published paper a couple years ago, regarding the four key position concept. Seems like in today's game being so pass oriented, this would be even more important.

Buffalo basically has nobody at these keys positions that and has not for over a decade now. When I say nobody I mean:

    1. True franchise QB. Fitz is a backup IMO.

    2. True LT. Peters is gone I know.

    3. Pass Rushing DE: Schobel was OK.

    4. Lockdown corner: The Bills have had some good ones over the years, but you can't really over pay and I understand that.

This article is about 5 years too late. "Lockdown" corners are not a requirement. Teams have shown that schemes and pressuring the QB obviate the need for shutdown cbs.

  11. Not sure if Flynn is the guy but whenever we add a player we should look for players the can compete for a starting role. That's the only way teams get better. That's what good teams do. No one should be annointed starter for life unless he has HOF credentials. Why not bring in someone to challenge Fitz. The deal Fitz signed is front loaded and would allow us to pick up or draft a qb that can challenge him. That was the benefit of signing him for the price that they did.

How about we spend our cap space on

1- At least 2 guys who can rush the passer

2- A legitimate #2 WR. We have a ton of 3s and a viable 1 in SJ, we NEED a #2 and he's not on the roster.

How about another thread wondering if we could trade for Sproles or Bush "so we can have a 3-headed monster?" This board used to have legitimate discussions about our roster and news about players we were rumored to be in the running for. Lately, all I see are a bunch of trolls posting and people starting threads bashing players they don't like.

  12. If this team is gonna spend money on a FA, it damn well be a very good pass rusher of the edge. When Wanny took over the D, like it or not, this team became a 4-3. Edwards, Carrington, Heard, Troup, and Johnson are all DTs in a 4-3, as are Williams and Dareus. The Bills aint carryong 7 DTs. And, they only have one 4-3 end on their roster. They need pass rushers on both edges... period. Whether one is a LB and the other a DE doesn't matter. Kelsay will be at one end and between the draft and FA, the Bills are gonna need at least 2 more 4-3 DEs (these will be speed guys in the 260-270 lb. range) and at least 2 or 3 4-3 OLBs (we're talking 225 - 240 lbs.). So, even if the Bills stayed 3-4 with 7 DL @ >300 lbs, how Okoye being about 295 lbs. and only having played DT and NT would make any sense, it's beyond me.

Carrington and Johnson are both DEs

  13. Why do I keep seeing these threads? Guys want to keep blowing up our lineup for some maybe players that we're not gonna sign anyway. How about a trade for Cam Newton? Why bring it up when it's not feasible at all? Flynn will be picked up for inflated money by someone promising a shot at a starting job. The Bills invested in Fitzpatrick, paying him #1 money and they have already stated he's the starter. If we get another QB it will be in the draft, not someone expected to compete for a starting role.

  14. and ndirish- I think that quote was during the rebuilding process when your on the edge of being good to elite and can maybe help that along with a 4th round pick, you make the move

I don't disagree with your sentiment. However, I don't believe he conditioned the statement and I really don't see the trade coming. They keep talking up Naaman and have indicated Brad Smith will be playing a lot more receiver. We have gotten more production out of our late rd draft picks and UDFAs than we have our early ones. We drafted Hairston and Searcy in this year's 4th rd and Easley last year. I don't believe Nix is willing to trade away young prospects, even for a receiver in his prime. Again, I would like to bring him in myself, just not convinced we'll do that. We've all seen the national media's ignorance when it comes to this team in the past. Most likely, they saw we have 2 guys on IR, Jones is out for 4-6 and assumed we needed a WR so they reported we are interested. But, I hope I'm wrong.
