YOOOOO...but what about this obvious and bizarre and IRRELEVANT insertion of posthumous narrative spin about Tremaine effing Edmunds?! (Used to unnecessarily mitigate Bernard's NOT TERRIBLE ranking (22) -- just a sad remnant of local contrarianism)

If Bernard and Edmunds were making the same exact amount of money, I’d rather have Bernard on this team, all day everyday, 10/10. Buscaglia and Joe Marino’s guy has never had a nose for the ball.

Yet we were still the 2 seed the last 2 years.  The problem is if these bad contracts aren’t addressed properly going forward.  Beane was just handed a giant gift with the huge cap increase this year and going forward.

Oh yeah, things could def be worse. We could be 31st in cap savings and not nearly as competitive (Saints). A lot of that has to do with our QB though. Things would be quite different if David Carr was throwing passes for us.

  3. Knox is a good player. A bit inconsistent, but he’s good. His true value lies somewhere between $8-$10M/yr and is likely what he would have got had he hit the open market prior to this offseason (where I expect a number of deals to be inflated). He’s not only making a bit more than he should, but his importance as a receiver has lessened with the addition of Kincaid. It’s not a Star Lotuleile egregious contract, but it isn’t one of Beane’s better decisions/extensions.

Similarly, I have no idea what he was thinking giving Diggs a 4 yr $96M extension at his age. Diggs was due a pay raise, but should’ve got half the length. A 2 yr $48M extension would’ve made much more sense and he’d be a 32 year old when it expired, looking for what would likely be his final contract. That deal was probably worse than Knox’s. The Von contract was worse than all, but only because of injury. After shedding a number of guys and fixing the cap issues when he first became GM, Bills are now 32nd ranked in cap because of Beane’s bad spending.

More importantly to the idea that the Bills need 2 legit TEs, when Knox was injured this past season, the offense struggled, including Kincaid.  When Knox came back, the offfense improved significantly.  The Bills want to run a lot of 2 TE sets so that they can run or pass with the same personnel on the field, making it harder on defenses.   They need to have two legitimate pass catching TEs.

This was true under Dorsey. I think his vision for the offense was a Gronk/Hernandez version with two viable threats. I can’t remember the percentages, but when Brady took over they ran much less two TE sets, even when Knox came back from injury. Overall I believe Knox only saw the field around 30% of the time under Brady. Will that change with a full offseason to incorporate his vision? We shall see…

  5. KC’s defense has supported Mahomes in the playoffs much more than Josh’s has, BUT the fact that we’re coming up short against Mahomes time after time has to factor into that equation. Or in other words, the Chiefs defense has forced Allen and the Bills to punt more than the other way around, regardless of defensive rankings.

The hypothetical of switching QBs and how their careers would be different, I’d love if there was a real answer for it. All we can do is speculate this and that, but I personally believe the takes that Buffalo would have zero championships while KC wouldn’t miss a beat with Allen are ridiculous. I don’t believe there’s a chasm of talent between the two QBs at all, but there’s still a gap, and however small it is, it has led to one QB winning league and Super Bowl MVPs while the other is simply planning his next tee time.

because they plan on keeping him on the team a few more seasons and this would help alleviate some cap issues we currently have.

A restructure would alleviate some of the problems now, but would make his contract even worse in the years to come. I think the Bills should approach him about a pay cut, not a restructure.

    He missed 5 games.

When he came back healthy after the bye he played 45% of the snaps.

I think it feels like Knox missed most of the year because he was largely a non-factor. It was a bad contract then (and I said as much before Kincaid was even on the radar) and it’s a bad contract now. The timing of it - after his brother had passed and before he ever took a snap in Dorsey’s offense - was curious to me. If all things stay status quo, I can’t see him being a real threat when we’ll have Diggs, Kincaid, a highly touted rookie, and Cook stealing his targets. Maybe even Shakir.

Every team in the league had the chance to hire Reid and draft Mahomes and didn't.  How is it on the Bills specifically?

I couldn't remember his name either, but I remember what you're talking about.  That might be the only person who can say "I told you so."

I was very against Mahomes, or anyone else who played in that spread offense style.  Any QB prior who came from that system failed horribly in the NFL.  Similar to Stroud, I I wouldn't have taken an Ohio State QB due to their history of bombing at the NFL level.

Yeah that Mike Leach spread offense and the long list of Texas Tech QBs who had never gone on to do anything in the league was one of the knocks against Mahomes. My sister was a trainer with the team and kept telling me “the Bills have to draft Mahomes. He’s different.” I asked her what made him so different from all the other guys that put up huge numbers in that offense? She said she didn’t know exactly, but could tell he wasn’t like the others. I didn’t believe her 😅

    There’s a separate article posted 1/17/2024 about Mahomes/Allen unless there’s another article.

Let me see if I can find what I’m referencing…

EDIT: the original story about Mahomes and Terry’s infatuation with him was actually a podcast with Monos from Dec of 2020. I tried to click on it but now it wants me to sign in.

I didn’t read it because I don’t support Ty Dunne’s hackfest attempts at tearing down the Bills because he was slighted by them for not being an real journalist and being buddies with two other dudes McD sent packing.

I honestly respect their game of being professional haters, but anything they say should be taken with a boulder of salt. Like writing an article about how they were on board with drafting Mahomes over Allen 7 years after the fact.

They write that article prior to 2018, or hell in 2020 or 2021, I get it. To write it NOW, when the gap has been the farthest since 2018? Trash, imo.

Oh, this wasn’t in the McD “hit piece.” The talk with Jim Monos happened awhile before that article came out. I didn’t read the McD story either, because a) I didn’t want to pay for it and b) whatever feelings I had because of what I read, it wouldn’t make a difference because Sean is still our HC. I’m not eager to see him in a negative light because it lessens my hope for the team.

EDIT to say: Dunne talked with Jim again after the piece came out and that’s when Jim was defending McD’s character.

Axe to grind Jimmy writing articles with Ty Dunne in 2024 about how they were the ones that were on board with drafting Mahomes 7 years prior before they both got shown the door.

    lmao.

So you read the same story. It could all be BS, but I don’t see what he would’ve stood to gain from lying. Also, when everyone was bashing McD, he came to his defense and said he was a great person. That they all worked very well together the short time during the draft but understood that McD wanted to bring in his own GM. Jim didn’t seem to harbor any resentment towards him.

I wouldn't trade Josh Allen for anything.  Keep Mahomes' wife and brother the hell away from this team.

People used to ask if I would trade for Brady or the Hoodie for one ring, and I said no.  Same answer with Mahomes.

Also, absolutely no one could have predicted Mahomes was going to have the career he's had.  He fell to 10 for a reason.  Yes, some people thought he had potential, but at the time, no one was harping on the Bills for that trade

I wouldn’t even say he “fell” to 10. Most of the pre draft rankings had him as a late 1st-2nd round prospect. Technically he shouldn’t have even gone ahead of Deshaun Watson.
When the Bills made the trade with KC, the Bills braintrust figured it was for Watson, Terry thought he could still get Mahomes at the back of round 1. He actually wanted to take him at 10, but McD hadn’t scouted QBs so he wanted to wait. Whaley was on record as saying “it’s your team, Mr Pegula, you can do whatever you want.” Pegula sided with his new coach, McDermott, and the rest is history.

  12. His only punt for us was an 80 yarder in the preseason. Would’ve been fun watching him in Bills gear, I know many here already were trying out nicknames for him. Good luck in KC, Matt, unless you play Buffalo, then I hope you shank your one or two punts.

Our superbowl will come. If there was an NFL QB Mount Rushmore it would be

    Tom Brady

    Peyton Manning

    Patrick Mahomes

    Josh Allen

In no particular order. Enjoy it. Through our years of suffering we finally landed our generational talent. We just need to stop screwing it up and get him receivers to throw to.

    Manning

    Brady

    Mahomes

    Montana

Allen is still behind a number of QB legends.

Not real surprising is it the Bills always talk about players being family & it seemed as soon as his story came out they dumped him before they knew any details .

Isn't it kind of ironic that if you owe a player $120 million he gets to stay with the team . Oh and even though charges were filed your girlfriend changes her mind after she is no longer P Oed and nothing else is ever mentioned about the incident .

I really don't know what tho think about this because it's like you are guilty before you are proven innocent (in some cases) & now he probably reached out to the Chiefs to put the screws to the Bills in some way .

    I just hope karma doesn't make the Bills it's B***H .

I think that Bills Chicks group really led the charge in getting him cut. If fans didn’t immediately take sides and waited for it all to play out, the organization wouldn’t have been under immense pressure to act without evidence. I just think a non-football related suspension would’ve been more fair than an outright cut.

    • Agree 1
  15. In hindsight, I wonder if a suspension while the legal issues played out would’ve made more sense than an outright cut? If there was sufficient evidence for the Bills to believe he was guilty, cool, cut him. But at the time there was only he said/she said and an annoying lawyer on the woman’s side making unprofessional threats.

But arguing about a contract is dumb, because there is always something the team can do to adjust the money.

Tell that to everyone who’s up in arms about the Von Miller contract. That’s what we do on message boards and talk in general - debate and value a player’s worth in relation to his production on the field. There’s a long list of contract regrets with this team.

The more run-heavy offense the Bills ran under Brady will make that tough unless Kincaid learns to block. 11 with Kincaid isn’t all that great against the blitz either. He’s an excellent receiver, but he belongs in the slot.

Kincaid actually had some pretty nice blocks on the season. He says himself it’s something he’ll continue to work on, but he’s not a total dud. The effort is there.

I was a bit skeptical about the dollar amount considering his usage in the offense. Since then, his usage has only decreased and we invested a 1st round pick in another TE. This deal looks pretty bad now. Knox is good but should not be making top TE money.

That was my exact argument at the time. Josh had never shown a reliance on using the TE, so I didn’t understand the timing of the extension. Especially when you also factor in it was Dorsey’s first year as a play caller. Wouldn’t you like to see how Knox is utilized before throwing that sort of money at him?I also didn’t think Knox would suddenly develop glue hands if he were to get more targets. That drop against PIT that led to Bernard getting injured on the very next series was inexcusable. No one but the Bills was paying Knox that contract. We outbid ourselves. He’s a great guy by all accounts and a close friend of Josh, but that’s bad money.

Excited to see him go. Next up Dawson Knox and Tre White. And let's not forget possibly the worst contract in Bills history, Von Miller

If Miller bounces back next season and looks like he did pre injury, this won’t be close to being true. If he continues to look like he did all of 2023, then sadly it’s accurate. Point is, too early to make that statement.
