Songs that Affected You on an Emotional Level
ajzepp replied to ajzepp's topic in Off the Wall Archives
You're gonna have to post some links pretty soon, man...based on what write about your kid, she sounds like she's very talented and has quite a future ahead of her! Oh, and Finkle...you can stick your man card straight up yer asss. Yep, he sure is...and the guy just loves music. I was really happy to see that Mission Bell hit #1 on the billboard top 200 a few weeks ago. You're exactly right that more and more people are starting to listen to him. A lot of people have heard his stuff without realizing it, cause he's had songs on commercials, tv shows, and movies...but the fact that his fan base is growing is awesome...he's very deserving. He collaborated with some pretty impressive folks on this latest album and when he's not selling out smaller-to-mid-sized concert venues here and abroad, he's opening up for the likes of Dylan, Costello, and others. So when music comes on, do you just stand there and stare at the stereo? What is the point of music if not to affect us on some emotional level? The tone of the thread has been mainly music that tugged some heart strings, but obviously there are many different types of emotions. Whenever I hear Van Haggar's "right now" I get fired up beyond belief. Others have mentioned Amazing Grace...when I hear that, particularly with the bag pipes of the Royal Scott Dragoon Guard, I think about my grandfather's military burial service, all that he did for this great country, and take take pride in the man that he was while he was alive. When I hear "Lose Yourself" by Eminem I feel like gloving up and knocking the crap out of the heavy bag for a while. And when I hear "Over the Rainbow" by my boy Iz, I cry like a B word. You mad? -
Songs that Affected You on an Emotional Level

I can see why you like this! That's pretty deep about the Heart song, my friend...that must have been very tough on you -
I've made mention of an artist named Amos Lee in some of the other music threads that come and go on the board. I first came across his stuff while watching a movie back in 2006 and I've been a huge fan ever since. Anyway, I've really been looking forward to his latest album, "Mission Bell", which just came out last month. I was giving it a first listen while driving home from work a week ago when I found myself really being affected by one of the tracks. The song is called Violin and it's very beautiful, but my reaction to it really caught me off guard. It just got me to thinking about times in the past when I heard a song that really affected me in some way, whether it made me sad, made me think, got me fired up and motivated, etc, etc. I was wondering about some of your experiences with this sort of thing. What songs have you heard that affected you on an emotional level?

Hell yeah it would! I'm just glad that Rob seems to have his mojo back...he was a bit of a B word the last time out. I don't know if he was just fatigued prior to the show or what, but he was NOT in game shape. He seems to be a little more energetic and ready to win this time around. This season has the potential to be one of the best...I really hope it pans out! Whoever cast that Phillip guy is genius!

They typically are very good with processing wins pretty quickly...the one time they ran out of the item I won, they didn't just refund what I spent on bids, they sent me a gift for the value of the item I won...they are cool like that. And I agree...there are a TON of morons. I really don't understand people sometime, but like you said, it's to our benefit in this case lol.
-
That's exactly how I felt after last night's episode. As much as I love this guy's game, Rob is clearly playing the stronger game after the first two shows. To Russell's credit, though, in each of his last two seasons whenever he wanted someone gone from the game, and even told it to their faces that they were going home, that person USUALLY went home. But I completely agree that he needs a dose of humility. He's too high up on his horse so far this season, and this time around he enters with a reputation. I have a lot of faith in his ability to manipulate the pieces to serve his wishes, but he's not omnipotent. If his game doesn't evolve, he'll be gone sooner than later.

Yep, there are horror stories for sure. But there are ways to make sure that doesn't happen, too. If you're smart about what you're doing, though, you won't get burned. Simply learn how the site works, and then bid ONLY on items that you're willing to pay retail price for. If you do that, then you are guaranteed to 1) never pay more than the retail price for a given item, and 2) ALWAYS come away with the item. Let me put it another way: Let's say you came to me and said you were in the market for an iPod. Then I tell you that I know two stores that sell the iPod for retail value, with one of those two stores offering a 50% chance of being able to buy it for far less than retail value. That's sort of how quibids works, except I think the chances of getting items for less than retail is much better than 50%. But you have morons who go to the site thinking they can just get stuff for cheap, they buy a bunch of bids and then start spewing them all over the place with no idea of what they're doing. Next thing you know, they've lost hundreds of dollars, they're mad as hell, they have NOTHING to show for it, and they find anyone who will listen to them complain about how dumb they are. If you think things through, you can make a killing here. My advice to you would be to look at the site, watch a few auctions, and see if any of the products appeal to you. If they do, find a low ticket item that you're willing to pay retail for (worst case scenario), and bid away. The site has a nice little display indicating what you've spent relative to the price of the item. If you get to the point where you've spent at or near the retail value, then you simply use the "buy it now" feature and buy the item. Again, buying the item at retail cost is the WORST CASE SCENARIO. I've had to do that exactly ONCE so far. Every other time I've been able to obtain the item for far less than the retail cost. The buy-it-now feature is your safety valve and your insurance policy for not throwing money away aimlessly. And that's just MY take on the site....Stojan will find things that work for him, as will anyone else who trys it out. But if you're judicious with your actions (and your money), you'll be fine. Let me clarify something about what I wrote above...bids are pre-purchased. This is why the buy-it-now button is essential. If you use, say, 20 bids on an item...that would be $12 out of pocket that you have into the item. Let's say the item costs $20. What quibids does is allow you to deduct what you have already invested in terms of bids (in this case $12) from the price of the item. So if you just decided to stop after the 20 bids, you DON'T lose that money. Quibids lets you buy the item for the cost of it MINUS what you have spent on bids. So in this example you'd be charged $8 for using the buy-it-now option. Does that make sense? When you're smart about this, the worst case scenario is always just simply paying retail for an item...it's taht simple.

LOL, yes, I know that phenomenon very well...I'm determined to make this a worthy investment, though!
-
I have played with a few times, but haven't figured out how to use it to my advantage yet since you can only set it for a max of 25 bids at a time. The other problem is that it wastes bids. If I could set it to the second I wanted the bid placed, that might be helpful (but then everyone would chooose one sec...) but as it is now it may place the bid with like 10+ sec to go, whereas I'd rather let others use their bids and sort of hang out until the clock gets closer to 1-2s. So yeah, I pretty much just click every bid where I want it and don't fiddle much with the bid o matic.

I just watched the first hour of the show and thought I'd make a quick post...I honestly thought that these kids would completely butcher the songs tonight. For the first half hour, it was the exact opposite. That was some of the most entertaining music I've heard on this show in a long time. To think that this was the top SIXTY, and so many of them did as well as they did, I was really impressed. The second group was nowhere near as good, but that's to be expected. I think what I'm also realizing is that I truly love Beatles music. Like everyone else, I had been familiar with the more popular beatles songs for most of my life, but over the past five or ten years in particular I've grown very fond of a lot of their other hits. This is some fantastic music!

Me too man...I'm just getting home from a long day's work...looking forward to chilling with a BK tendercrisp, a nice cold cherry coke, and some Advil lol
-
Excellent post, and I'm glad to see you are already kicking ass You may have already figured this out for yourself, but one of the best ways to win items is to do a search for the exact item you want to bid on. That way you can see the history of what happened with previous auctions, INCLUDING the time of day. Sometimes there are trends that can be discerned and you can use that to your advantage.

LOL, dude, wtf...I literally just started watching "Secret" the other day, but I got too tired to continue. I only got to the part where the retired cop guy was interviewing the husband of the woman who was killed. It seems this movie has some SICK reviews, so can't wait to watch the rest of it. You and I are like brothers from another mother or something...we have very similar taste in entertainment lol

I think Crystal was easily the more talented of the two...I'm still shocked that Lee won, to be honest. I'm still surprised that Kris Allen won too. I think the ladies might be a little stronger than the men this season, but a couple of those dudes have potential. And I am interested to see how transforming this show is for a few of them. They took clay aiken from a total GEEK and turned him into a huge star. I don't know if that will happen this year, but some of these dudes are in SERIOUS need of a makeover. What do you think about this Beatles thing they have going on this week?
-
No kidding? Well I definitely trust your judgement, so please let us know what you think. I've been on a foreign film kick the last week or two, so this one really appeals to me. If you like poorly-acted but fun foreign "guy" films, check out "Vengeance". It was some of the worst acting I've ever seen but I loved every minute. Lana seems to give the books a thumbs up, so I'm excited to watch this film

That "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is part of a series, I think...I have it in my Netflix queue for a while...supposed to be excellent
-
I'm really hoping that one or two (or more) really raise their game as the season progresses...it's pretty obviously this will DEFINITELY be the most talented top 24 they've ever had, so hopefully the same can be said of the 12 finalists. One thing I hated about last season was that I had to put up with (or fast forward through) the crap in order to get to Crystal or Lee's performance. There have been past seasons where the entire group was at least entertaining, which makes the show better. There were a LOT of shows last season where the judges were dropping negative comments on them for nearly the entire show.

I'm still all for drafting the guy, I just will now be more prepared to hear stories about him running through the locker room in a cape while he sings the theme song from spider man. How much you guys want to bet his favorite drink is chocolate milk?
-
lol, I don't either as long as it's new stuff we haven't seen.
-
I haven't checked out the titles yet, but 5k is only a fraction of what Netflix has. I definitely wouldn't give up my Netflix for it, but it's nice to have more free stuff lol

A couple years ago, Fez told me about how awesome an Amazon Prime membership was. Since that time, I've done most of my shopping in this manner and I have been in love with this service. Today, they notified us that those with Prime memberships will now have access to over 5000 movies and tv shows for free, to stream either on your PC or through a tv/bd player/etc that has this capability. If you don't currently have a Prime membership, you may want to get one!

3) Tell me about your decision to enter the draft as a junior: Was it an easy decision, and have you had any doubts that you made the right choice? It was, but it wasn't. I kinda felt like I was ready to, uhm, go ... uhm, got coached by coach (Nick) Saban, so he got me real prepared to go. I was thinking about the pros and cons of it, and I thought it would be a good idea to go. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard. Pretty much every year this happens, though. You'll have one or two QBs that weren't on most radars as a top pick during the season, but once draft times rolls around, and because of the position they play, all of a sudden these guys are the next Peyton Manning. As much as I love the draft and all that leads up to it, it's never made sense to me how players can completely change their stock value based on things that happen AFTER they're seasons are over. If these draft gurus know so much about these players, wouldn't their views be pretty much set based upon their level of play during actual games? I don't see how one guy can have a great, or crappy, combine workout and then either rocket up teams' big boards or plummet downward right off of them. I would hope that the scouting departments (particularly our own) are immune to all the hype that surrounds a lot of these prospects and base their decisions on what these kids do during actual game play.
