but this was just a bizarre move not a shrewd business move

In retrospect yeah.  They would’ve had to have known Penix would be available at 8 when they paid that contract.  Now they’re going to hand a cap-crushed team to a promising young QB who will need talent around him?  Bizarre is right, seems like a failure of process.  Raiders are arguably in better shape long term with zero QBs than the Falcons are with two.  (But the Raiders should’ve went and got Fields when they had the chance.)

Forgot KC jumping to 27 and getting a WR.

Yup I expect that as well.  Beane is going to have to stay aggressive in this draft just to keep up - folks treat the draft like it's Christmas morning but forget to pay attention to what the Bills' competitors are coming home with in the weeks leading up to the event.  The Jets and Chiefs are going to have much-improved rosters on Sunday; the Dolphins and Patriots too but they're just less scary as threats.  But I can easily see a scenario where the Jets suddenly have two stud WRs and the Chiefs load up on offensive weapons as well.

Things we don’t know when doing all these mocks. I highly doubt the Bills pass on him but if he has injury concerns and the Bills never brought him in officially, he’s probably off their board. Or maybe they already cleared him at the combine.

It's out there - he has a shoulder injury that is not considered serious and won't be an issue past this upcoming season.

I agree. This is how I see it playing out. We get into the top 9 for a top 3 WR, but the price will be steeper than most here expect. This team will have to win with offense this season and they need a stud WR for the offense to do that. The fact that the team is at the forefront of PSL sales and needs to keep the fan base stoked adds pressure from the top. 2025 draft capital will be sacrificed.

And not for nothing but Beane has publicly lamented about not "bottoming out" like the Bengals did when they were able to draft Chase.  If you think you need a Chase to get past early-round playoff exits (and I think they might need that, or at least believe that they do), you make the sacrifice, go get one and figure out next year's draft next year.

I still am not 100% sure if ECB always gets real info or not, but I have seen enough from him to give some credence to his info. If this report is true, it is very interesting.

The day before the 2022 draft it was reported by someone who worked for I think The Draft Network that we had brought Elam in on a top 30 visit earlier that week. This was not a widely publicized visit, it was kept under wraps except for that one writer that got the scoop.

Last year after the draft Beane revealed that they had met virtually with Kincaid a couple times earlier in the week because they had zeroed in on him as a possible target. This was never reported by anybody.

So this tweet from ECB is the kind of report I have been looking out for - a last minute report with information that isn't widely publicized that says we are doing work on a prospect the week of the draft. There might be something to this.

In the 1st round Beane loves prospects with elite physical traits that interview well and have a good personality. Worthy fits the profile.

A trade up for Worthy - and taking him before Thomas is even off the board - is very possibly the surprise Beane move we’re all talking about Friday morning.

It's just one game, though. He had a lot of good games. Plus Michigan was built to run the ball.

I know it and you're right.  But still... that was a game that was there for the taking (they pulled away late) and they would not let him throw the ball.  How can he be a top five pick in that scenario?  It would be unprecedented.  But I guess maybe he was just hurt and they were trying to power through it.

The thing I keep reading about McCarthy is that he was off-the-charts good on third down (the money down): https://www.footballscout365.com/post/2024-nfl-draft-measuring-quarterback-clutch-ability-using-points-earned-per-play-on-3rd-and-4th-dow. NFL teams apparently really care about that stat (and rightly so, I'd argue). He also apparently had a ridiculously good pro day.

I just can't get past that Penn State game.  I get that he was hurt but they were hiding him - they would not let him throw the ball.
