1. Ahem.... fellas, It's January.  A little early to be having these dreams, isn't it?

    587347

Did you guys not see where I said i'd rather have Ngata?!

The post is simply stating that I think Vince may be there when we pick. Not once did I say we should take him. As a matter of fact, I said quite the opposite. If anything is implied it's that I could see Marv making the move.

It's gotten to the point where all anyone has to do is say "Vince Young" and people will jump to assumptions that the post is about drafting him.

  2. The closer we get to the draft, the stronger the feeling gets. The feeling that Vince Young will fall.

Now i'm not talking like Aaron Rodgers fall or even Ben Roethlisberger fall. But i'm starting to feel he'll be available when we pick. After last night's Senior Bowl and the weeks practices, here's how i'm seeing it shaping up:

    1.) Houston - Reggie Bush

2.) New Orleans - Matt Leinart

    3.) Tennessee - Jay Cutler

    4.) New York - D'Brickashaw Ferguson

5.) Green Bay - Mario Williams

    6.) Oakland - A.J. Hawk

7.) San Francisco - DeAngelo Williams

From what I understand, Norm Chow is REALLY high on Cutler. Especially after working with him all week. He coached Leinart and college and "reportedly" thinks Cutler would have been better with Leinart's targets. On top of all of this, Cutler provides a more stable selection at the QB position. We all know what Young is capable of. But I think the closer we get to the draft, the more people are going to realize that teams are afraid of picking Young.

I think all of these people who are saying he's a top-3 pick are just clueless media members who are in love with him and his hype.

If he isn't picked by either New Orleans or Tennessee, he's going to fall. There's absolutely no way the Jets will take him. Especially not after the way the Brick looked this week. He's exactly what they want or need. It's either going to be the Brick or DeAngelo who helped his cause TREMENDOUSLY this week.

From there the only team who would take him is Oakland. Green Bay isn't going to spend their pick on a QB when they picked one just last year. And San Fran spent the #1 pick overall on a QB last year as well. And the rumors are flying that Daunte is going to reunite with Randy in Oakland.

All in all, after last night this is how I see things coming together. I'm not saying we take Vince. I'm just saying that i'm starting to think he'll be there. And I wouldn't be surprised if he was the pick if he was there. Although, i'd rather have Ngata.

  3. Marcus McNeil OT Auburn.

    586531

    Just say.......

    NOOOOOOO!!!!!

By the way, it's Haloti Ngata, DT Oregon.

Or D'Brickashaw Ferguson (1) or Mario Williams (1a) if one of them drops.

If all 3 are unavailable, Michael Huff, CB/S Texas; Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech; Tambla Hali, DE Penn State; Vernon Davis, TE Maryland; or the shockers: Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt or DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis

  4. This is pretty dumb if you ask me.

I was stoked that we offered the job to Bates. But when he rejected it, I was sure we were going to go after Donnie Henderson or Ted Cotrell.

But Johnnie Lynn and Perry Fewell?

Mike Singeltary may not want to leave San Fran. But after watching him coach in the Senior Bowl, a lot of people seem to think he has HC potential. Not to mention the respect he would obviously have from our players. Why not interview him?

Henderson and Cotrell are widely respected, skilled, and available with experience. And contrary to popular belief, Cotrell didn't screw up in New York and Minnesota. As a matter of fact, he turned the Vikes D around. They were much worse before he arrived.

Steve Fairchild is acceptable. Dick Jauron is acceptable. But I want a DC that everyone has faith in. Not some reject DB's coach.

  5. Sorry, but I can think of few football posts that have made less sense than this. It is hard to believe that you are serious.

Teams run right through us, because we have lousy DTs. Despite this, we have a DE with a dozen sacks and you list 2 in your top ten?

We have drafted receivers and running backs first for years on end. It hasn't worked. I can tell because we suck. Still, you list a TE, a WR, and 3 running backs? Are you a masochist?

A CB? Really? We can franchise Nate, and MaGee is one of our best players.

Another 1st round QB? How much do you think he will cost at #8? Who cares, right?

This football team needs people who can block, wouldn't you say? The Bengals were said to have reached for Jones, and look at what he has done. I know that Marv will soon be 81, but GMs are supposed to be able to identify people who can play football at positions that will help the team.

If Marv doesn't bring us immediate help accross the entire OL, JP will be beaten to a pulp, perhaps SO bad that he will be unable to give hair flopping high fives.

If he doesn't bring us help at DT, teams will continue to dominate us on the ground on our home field.

Seriously, if the Bills select from your top ten, this team will be hard pressed to improve at all.

The bad news is that I wouldn't be surprised one bit if you are correct.

    586286

Did you read the whole post?

I'm listing guys you pick at 8 if Ferguson, Williams, Hawk, and Ngata are gone and we CAN'T trade down.

So you're saying we should take Brodrick Bunkley or Claude Wroten at 8? Both may slip to the late-1st/early-2nd. Yes, I know the Cinci-Jones story. But it wasn't anywhere's near as bad as that.

And don't even talk to me about Eric Winston or Winston Justice at 8.

  6. pass on the RB's - they are the LAST piece of the puzzle.  You grab them once you are set on the OL and at QB...

    585900

I have to agree with you. That's why Tambla Hali is #1 on my board then.

But with Jimmy Williams' character issues and Michael Huff immediately throwing Vincent or Milloy to the fire (which i'm not ready to do), we're looking at a guy like Vernon Davis at TE.

Honestly, I think DeAngelo Williams is going to be something spectacular! If we were put in this nightmarish situation, the idea of having Willis McGahee AND DeAngelo Williams in the same backfield would be too good to pass on. Especially with Fairchild's history of using both Steve Jackson and Marshall Faulk and Willis' history of not playing every down.

If the Bills don't draft someone who weighs more than 280 pounds, I will be disappointed.

    So will I.

But use your head. Who are we going to draft? Winston Justice? Eric Winston? Marcus McNeill? Brodrick Bunkley?

Almost all of those guys is going to go at around 20. I'd rather have someone whose worth taking at another position and address the line's in 2 & 3 and then HEAVILY in FA.

  7. In a post elsewhere, i've been talking about a scenario that's been a nightmare in the back of my mind. It may have been discussed before as well. This nightmare if you will, is not so far fetched. It's a definite possibility and it plays out like this:

    1.) Houston - Reggie Bush

2.) New Orleans - Matt Leinart

    3.) Tennessee - Vince Young

    4.) New York - D'Brickashaw Ferguson

    5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk

6.) San Francisco - Mario Williams

    7.) Oakland - Haloti Ngata

So now what? Obviously, try and trade down. The crop that's around now as far as DT and OT go are nowhere's NEAR worth picking at #8. But what if we can't trade down? Then we're stuck at 8 looking outside the box. Here's how my board would stand:

1.) Tambla Hali, DE Penn State

    2.) DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis

    3.) Vernon Davis, TE Maryland

4.) Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech

    5.) Michael Huff, S Texas

6.) Santonio Holmes, WR Ohio State

    7.) Lendale White, RB USC

8.) Mathias Kiwanuka, DE Boston College

    9.) Chad Greenway, LB Iowa

    10.) Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt

Another RB? DeAngelo Williams might be too good to pass on. Especially if they feel WM needs another guy with him.

  8. You know I'm not a big fan of Mortensen, but I think he's dead on with Cutler.  However, I'm not too sure that even with a good senior bowl/combine that he's going to jump into the top 10....UNLESS chad pennington cannot return to the Jets with his injuries.  So right now a lot revolves on outside factors where Cutler will go.

    Here's how I see it:

    Pennington returns

1.) Houston - Reggie Bush, RB USC

2.) New Orleans - Vince Young, QB Texas

3.) Tennessee - Matt Leinart, QB USC

4.) New York Jets - Mario Williams, DE N.C. State

5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State

6.) San Francisco - Toss up between Ngata, Hali, Huff (probably best athlete available)

7.) Oakland - Ngata or Williams, maybe White

    Pennington isnt good to go

1.) Houston - Reggie Bush, RB USC

2.) New Orleans - Vince Young, QB Texas

3.) Tennessee - Matt Leinart, QB USC

4.) New York Jets - Cutler

5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State

6.) San Francisco - Mario Williams

7.) Oakland - Ngata or Hali, maybe Williams

Still a little early for a solid mock though...lots of factors that need to be determined

    585858

No way does New York take Mario Williams over D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

  9. Eric Winston?  Certainly not an 8 so far, but he is good and fills a need. That would not be the best scenario for us.

    585621

No way do we draft Winston at 8. He's projected late-1st, maybe early 2nd. I don't even think he's the THIRD best OT. I'd have to put Winston Justice, Marcus McNeill, and maybe even Jonathan Scott ahead of him.

that leave us with Kiawanuka, I´m all for it.

Not with the way I saw him play in BC's bowl game and the way he's been being "pwned" at Senior Bowl practices.

Kambla Hali would be the next best DE. And with the way Manny Lawson has been beasting it, he might jump ahead of Mathias as well.

  10. oh..in that case from his lips to God's ear.  Ferguson would be just what we need. Another rookie quarterback would not be something we should waste a high pick on.

    585614

    I agree.

But my nightmare scenario is the following draft, with no trade down partner:

1.) Houston - Reggie Bush, RB USC

2.) New Orleans - Matt Leinart, QB USC

3.) Tennessee - Vince Young, QB Texas

4.) New York Jets - D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT Virginia

5.) Green Bay - A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State

6.) San Francisco - Mario Williams, DE N.C. State

7.) Oakland - Haloti Ngata, DT Oregon

If Williams, Ngata, and Ferguson are off the board; there isn't another DT or OT worth taking at #8. Some could argue Tambla Hali may be worth #8, but I think that would be a tad of a stretch (anyone else would be a MAJOR stretch).

If there's no market for a trade, what would we do?

  11. pretty solid but i have seen Hali ahead of Kiawanuka, and i think that is correctly so. I also don't think Lendale White is that good (good, but not top 15 caliber)

    584571

After watching some practices, I agree completely about Kiwanuka. Although, I disgree about White.

I've also edited my board accordingly.

  12. yes...maybe cutler getting knocked on his ass by onrushing defensive linemen will be better than Losman or Holcomb getting knocked on their ass by defensive linemen.

    585606

I think you might have read the post wrong.

He's stating that maybe the Jets will pass on D'Brickashaw Ferguson for Jay Cutler. Thus allowing the Brick to fall to us.

  13. Because the season is over and draft experts and many NFL teams alike start to overanalyze players and weigh in too many things that have nothing to do with performance on the field in their evaluation.

Ngata and Gabe Watson are big DT's but nowhere near as good as their hype.  In some of the better DT drafts of recent years, these guys wouldn't even be mentioned as first round prospects.  Yet they are mentioned as such in this draft(a strong overall class, IMO) simply because you need 2-4 good DT's and it's hard to find that many.  By contrast, OT's aren't rotated, so you can get by with two good ones.  Ngata is a fat guy with a low motor.  I think Gabe Watson can even hit double-low if properly unmotivated.  By the end of the year, Gabe was actually getting less snaps than his backup, "Tree", who I believe is a sophomore.

    585166

Watson's been having a GREAT Senior Bowl though.

  14. 1.) Reggie Bush, RB USC

    2.) Matt Leinart  Qb USC

3.) Mario Williams, DE N.C. State

    4.) Dbrickshaw Ferguson OT Virginia

    5.) Haloti Ngata, DT Oregon

6.) A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State

7.) Mathias Kiwinuka, DE Boston College

    8.) Chad Greenway OLB  Iowa

    9.) Marcedes lewis  te  UCLA

10.) Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech

    11.) DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis

    12.) Lendale White, RB USC

13.) Antonio Cromartie CB  Florida St

    14.) DeMeco Ryans OLB  Alabama

    15.) Vernon Davis, TE Maryland

Noteable subtractions:  Vince Young.  Vince Young is a tremendous athlete. However the spread option offense doesnt fly in the nfl.  I wouldnt want an offense solely built around Young, cause I dont think he'll ever be that good of a quaterback.  Michael Huff.  I dont get the hype about this guy. Yeah he's got some speed, and well thats about it.  He's  not a great hitter, and he's not good in coverage. I also refuse to rank a safety as a top 15 player

Noteable additions:  Chad Greenway... think brian urlacher.  Marcedes Lewis.  He got of got lost in the shuffle with Vernon Davis.  Lewis has the height advantage. He'll be a bigger redzone threat. He has better hands and he's quicker off the line. I also think he work the middle of the field better.  Antonio Cromartie.  If not for his knee injury before the season would be a no doubt about it top 10 pick. The total package as far as cb's go, knee inury be damned he makes my list.  DeMeco Ryans.  Kind of gets lost in the shuffle with the other lbs in this draft.  Not overly fast, but has a great nose for the ball. Makes plays sideline to sideline.  Hell of a lb, and a guy a team can build a foundation of a defense around.

    584889

You know what's amazing? We're disagreeing about something and acting civil about it.

Seriously though, I think Davis is better than Mercedes. I've always felt he was a little overhyped myself.

I like Cromartie a lot. But I don't think he's top-15. Not after his injury and all.

I think Greenway is a good LB. Probably in the 15-20 range. But personally, i'm not a big fan.

And I understand a lot of people aren't high on Young for whatever reason. But to drop him below Cromartie, Ryans, and Davis is just plain crazy talk.

  15. ...........don't forget to wipe before flushing!!!!

    584560

While I think "in a heartbeat" is pushing it, I also think that calling this proposal "the dumbest idea" ever is uncalled for as well.

What do you think J.P. Losman would get us? If we were looking to deal him, the best we would get is a 2nd. Tell me ONE team that would even think about giving us a first.

That being said, Ryan Fitzpatrick and a 3rd sounds pretty fair. I wouldn't do it personally. But if Marv and Ralph really hate J.P. and don't want him, then it would make sense. Especially with Fairchild's history with him.

    P.S. Ryan Fitzpatrick WAS drafted.

  16. I thought this would be a fun little game. Create the first 15 prospects of the Bills draft board if you were GM.

Mind you, this is a value board, not a NEED board. Just because someone is #1 on the board doesn't mean you have to select him. Here's mine:

    1.) Reggie Bush, RB USC

    2.) Vince Young, QB Texas

    3.) D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT Virginia

    4.) Matt Leinart, QB USC

5.) Mario Williams, DE N.C. State

6.) A.J. Hawk, LB Ohio State

    7.) Haloti Ngata, DT Oregon

8.) Tambla Hali, DE Penn State

    9.) Michael Huff, S Texas

10.) Jimmy Williams, CB Virginia Tech

    11.) DeAngelo Williams, RB Memphis

    12.) Vernon Davis, TE Maryland

13.) Santonio Holmes, WR Ohio State

    14.) Lendale White, RB USC

    15.) Jay Cutler, QB Vanderbilt

You'll notice that with the exception of Ngata, Williams, and Kiwinuka; there are no D-Lineman and with the exception of Ferguson; no O-Lineman. That's because there isn't anyone else worth being in the top-15 (I actually have Tambla Hali at 16 however). After Ngata, the next best DT's are Brodrick Bunkley, Claude Wroten, and Gabe Watson. They won't be selected until the middle-1st at best. Same goes for Winston Justice, Marcus McNeill, and Eric Winston on OT.

So if neither Ngata, Ferguson, or Williams are there; then we should trade down. If we can't, then we may have to look outside the OL/DL box in the 1st round. Otherwise, we'll be reaching (even though Kiwinuka is 8th on my board, I think picking him 8th would be a little bit of a reach). I believe we'll address both lines HEAVILY in FA, so it won't be the end of the world if we wait until the 2nd (although it's not preferred).

    How about you guys?

EDIT: After catching some Senior Bowl practices, I have to agree that Hali is better than Kiwinuka. Therefore, i've switched their spots (Hali was 16 and unlisted).

  17. If he is not there, is it because of the injury that he suffered in the Bowl game?  I have not heard much about this injury but I was hoping he'd be at the Senior Bowl.  I am guessing that it not that bad or he wouldn't have declared for the draft.  Anyone have any information?

    584539

    Uh.... he's a Junior dude.

  18. Seriously though, with April (who was a GODSEND), our new DL coach, and now Fairchild; how long before we start calling ourselves "The Greatest Show on Turf"? :)

Honestly though, I like the hire of Steve Fairchild. Here are my likes/dislikes:

    Dislikes:

-The initial sinking feeling I got when I heard our new OC was GW's RB coach.

-The fact that Martz called the plays in St. Louis for Fairchild's entire tenure, save the 11 games he was out last season.

    Likes:

-It's not Clements or Gilbride 0:)

-He turned an unknown 6th round QB send-off from New Orleans into a Pro-Bowler in his 1st year.

-He was both a QB coach and a RB coach, so he SHOULD understand the importance that balance between both positions hold.

-Although he was GW's assistant as a RB coach, he does understand the Bills organization, it's fans, and it's surroundings.

Lastly, with only two DC positions available; I find absolutely no reason why we shouldn't get either Jim Bates or Donnie Henderson. If anyone else is hired, i'm going to be pissed...... unless of course it's some off the radar stud.

  19. Well, it would be interesting...

    583276

Again, let me state that this is not what i'd like to see.

But if Ngata, Ferguson, and Williams are off the board and we can't find a partner to trade down with; I see it happening. Hell, I see it happening even if we do have people to trade down with.

I think Ralph is sick to his stomach with the thought of J.P. Losman. He was TD/MM's baby. I just have a gut feeling with the way Ralph, Marv, and Jauron have been talking that J.P.'s days in Buffalo may be numbered. I think Ralph might want his own QB and Cutler might be that guy.

I can see them pulling some **** like that.

  20. Cutler has drawn comparisons to Favre. I know another college QB that drew comparisons to Favre and we have him. If J.P is provided with some stability I think that he has what it takes to be successful.

    582206

    I agree 100%

But that's not what i'm getting at. I have a hunch that Ralph doesn't like J.P. I think that's part of the reason Sherman's not here. I could definitely see them pulling something like this.

I'm simply trying to gauge what the response and/or the shock would be in this move.

  21. As we approach the draft, i'm noticing more and more that Jay Cutler is becoming the "darling" of the draft ala Philip Rivers in 2004.

Most project him going to Miami with the 17th pick right now. I expect that after the Senior Bowl, his stock will rise even more than it has already. Bringing him to around our position.

Now i'm not saying that we should draft Jay Cutler. Certainly not. But what if Williams, Ngata, Hawk, and Ferguson are all gone? What if this team has already given up on J.P. Losman and they select him. What would the reaction be?

    Just a curiousity post.....

  22. Has anyone heard the rumor about a Eric Moulds for Patrick Ramsey and cash or draft pick swap? Just wondering. A friend of mine mentioned something to me about it yesterday.

    581825

No, I haven't heard that one. But Ramsey is Losman except 2 years younger. They even came from the same school. I'd have to pass on that.

  23. koom bye yah my lord

    koom bye yah

    koom bye yah my lord

    koom bye yah.

    (sorry for the phoenetic spelling)

All we are saying, is give peace a chance.

I'd like to buy the world a coke and teach it harmony.....

    581816

That came quicker than I thought it would :D

  24. I think asking for Hutchinson AND Bentley might be pushing it a little.

I for one hope that we get Bentley and then get Max-Jean Gilles either as part of a trade-down from our 8th or a trade-up from our 2nd rounder.

If not and the Brick falls to us, you have to take him. Either way, i'm looking at this:

    Mike Gandy

    Max-Jean Gilles

    LeCharles Bentley

Chris Villarial or Mike Williams (GASP!)

    Jason Peters

    OR

    D'Brickashaw Ferguson

Mike Gandy ('played LG at Chicago before coming to Buffalo)

    LeCharles Bentley

    Chris Villarial or Mike Williams

    Jason Peters
