Hey I agree Harrington is not a good QB but he played well enough to beat the Bears. How did JP do in that game? He also played the Pats tough and has played okay of late. I would NOT want him as my QB. I'm just making the point JP has not played well the past few weeks compared to other QBs. He's a professional QB and completed just 8 passes! 8 passes last week. In terms of him being 8th in the AFC. I would bet NO GM in the AFC would take him ahead of who their QB is at this point. Any commentator on the NFL will tell you he has looked dreadful---he just has. You can't argue JP has played well the past 4 weeks. He is arguably the worst QB in the NFL the past 4 weeks. The good thing is, he can improve and hopefully he does. At least it is tough to get worse.

Proof that the OL makes the difference
Ray replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It helps to have both but there are many more examples of switching QBs and keeping the lines the same and the second QB doing better--just look at the Bills. Flutie for Johnson. Brady for Bledsoe. Romo for Bledsoe. Harrington for Culpepper this year! JP has been putrid the last 4 games. Quit making apologies for the guy and call a spade a spade. He played well in the first few games then has regressed terribly. That doesn't mean he won't be a good QB but he has been awful. I hate the fact the Bills games are so painful to watch. Let's all hope he starts doing things better. -
Let's wait for all the facts to come out. A verbal/shouting match between a couple is hardly new in the history of humanity. Let's just wait for the facts of the case.
-
Definitely well below average! Hopefully that changes. He is the worst QB in the division. Harrington has done better than him for the Dolphins. Not even in the top 10 in the AFC. Let's hope he starts showing some signs of progress or else this developmental thing starts up again.

Anyone thinking of going after Byron Leftwich?
Ray replied to DieHardBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not impressed with him at all. Too much of an injury concern and a very average QB to spend that much money on him. -
Of all the problems with this team and a 3rd round pick who missed three weeks of TC b/c his mother died is "concerning." Wow, let's get some perspective. How about Denver last year with that 3rd round pick choosing M Clarrett. How's that working out. Give the guy a year to re-group and play and get used to football.

damned if Donahoe's screwups aren't
Ray replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually the year after they let big Ted go we had one of the worst, if not the worst defenses in the NFL. Not the 3rd best. Remember 3-13? Remeber how Donahoe and GW wanted fit defensive tackles and made fun of Ted for being too fat? How'd that move work out? Well, great for big Ted!!! -
All I am saying is that JP has to pick his game up. The OL is part of the problem. But there have been plenty of times he has gotten ample time to throw and just hasn't delivered. People used the exact same excuse for Rob Johnson--the OL was just so bad he couldn't perform. Is it a coincidence that every team he went to he was horrible? I guess all the OL's were the problem and not him. At some point you have to look at the QB. Drew Bledsoe would only win a SB if he had a great OL! Well he is now on his 3rd team where he has been replaced. I suppose it is the OL and the WRs not getting open for him as well. In regards to Brady, I'm just making the point that a QB has to be good and make quick decisions and get the ball out. The Pats do not have this mythical fantastic OL. Their receivers are probably the bottom 5-10 in the league and he makes them better. I just don't understand why people can't seem to point a finger at Losman. It's the WR's fault for not getting open or the OL's fault. It is about a quarter of the time, but the rest of the time he has to prove himself. I don't expect him to be Brady. TB is the best QB to play the game in the past 20 years. But I would like him to be a serviceable QB. Right now the standard is so low for him that we are happy when he doesn't fumble and that is a great game for him. He looks exactly like RJ now---even worse and I thought that wasn't possible. Let's hope he starts to get it because I do not want to go through another 4 yrs of developing a QB.

I recognize that the line has issues but JP has been the majority of the problem. I'm just citing examples of how QBs were not good b/c their line was awful. Then the line stays the same, the QB changes and in one week all of a sudden the line "gets it!" Come on! Listen, I really want JP to be the guy. I think he works really hard, studies hard but his performance the last month has been abysmal. There is just a very big disconnect when he goes out there. Sometimes I think that he is afraid to make a mistake so he holds onto the ball until someone is completely wide open. I agree the offense as a whole has been to blame, but a great QB would take this offense and make it very, very good. Look at the Pats receiving corps--they are in the bottom 10 in the league, but b/c they have a QB who throws timely and accurately they become better. Troy Brown as your best or 2nd WR? Hey,we know JP is really bad as a pocket passer. Play to his strengths. Roll-outs, QB draws, quick slants, etc.... That way you slow down the pass rush as well just by what you are doing.
-
Sacks are only half the picture though as well. When a QB is under pressure and completes a pass rather than throwing it away or throwing an interception is a huge deal. I'm just making the point that our OL is not as bad as some make it out to be. It is amazing to me how this was the supposed reason Rob Johnson was never good--b/c the OL was horrible. They changed only one player and kept the line intact and guess what happened? The Bills started winning and went to the playoffs--remember those days? When the Bills went to the playoffs. It was the exact same situation in New England. I live in Boston and it was the same. Bledsoe would only be so much better if he had the time to throw. Well they changed one player--the QB and won the SB. Now Brady has a very average OL. They are not great at pass blocking or run blocking. Watch the games. Mulroney was constantly met by defenders in the backfield but would make a defender miss and then hit a hole. Brady is under pressure all the time. But he makes quick decisions and gets the ball out quickly. The Bills sacked Brady a handful of times and had him under pressure but he gets the ball out. I just want JP to do the same---dump it off, take a few yards over a sack etc.... Remeber how Dallas' OL was horrible this year until they replaced Bledsoe! Heck, the Bills OL looked much better last year with Holcomb then JP.

The Bills o-line doesn't give J-Lo enough time?
Ray replied to CoachChuckDickerson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That is exactly correct. The people who want JP to have 5 seconds to throw every pass and the WRs to have 5-10 yards separation from the defenders are clueless. Watch the NFL---basically all OL's are pretty equal on about 25 teams. There is no dominant line. JP gets a lot of time on many passes. Tom Brady does not get a lot of time to throw many times but he's accurate and knows how to read defenses and make quick decisions. People have to get out of fantasy land thinking that some wonderful LT and RT are going to make JP better. He has got to make himself better. The idea that you are going to get 5 pro-bowlers on the line giving him 5 seconds to throw on every down is preposterous. You have to live with an average OL. -
Yes that same year that he started out 0-2 and Brady won the SB for them! Something Bledsoe never did for them. Isn't it amazing as well how Dallas' line was terrible this year and they substitute one player---yes one player. A QB who can actually get rid of the ball quickly and the line is instantly better. How come the same line last year gave up almost half the amount of sacks with Kelly Holcomb as they did with JP? It was the same line and the same amount of pass attempts.
-
Just like how the Patriots had an "awful" OL, Bledsoe went down (and the only reason he was sucking was the the OL) and in comes Brady. And guess what? They won the Super Bowl that year with such a bad OL. Brady would make this line look good. They are an average line in this league! 20 other tema shave average lines--a great QB makes the line look great. A QB that can't get rid of the ball, can't read defenses and can't make good decisions makes the line terrible.
-
Great--let's spend our 4th first round pick in less than a decade on a QB (Johnson, Bledsoe, Losman, and ??Leftwich/B Quinn). The only successful QB we have had in a decade is Flutie who was a non-draft pick from the CFL.
-
4 of 5 sacks were his fault. He missed Evans on that 2nd quarter throw! That was a terrible throw and should have been a TD. If you exchanged Tom Brady and JP and kept everything else the same our line would then be "great" The QB has to make quick decisions, he just has to! If you want a QB to have 5-6 seconds to throw the ball go watch high school football. It does not happen conssistently in the NFL. It just doesn't! If you also want receivers to have 10 yards of separation from the defenders on every play go watch Pop Warner. This is the NFL! You need a QB who can throw accurately and a WR is open when there is a yard or two separation from the defenders.

JP Naysayers tell me his problems vs. GB
Ray replied to AnthonyF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was really hoping JP would look pretty good and improve this year. Unfortunately it has been the opposite. He looked better early in the year and has regressed. He reminds me completely of RJ. I hate to say it, but everything he does reminds me of RJ. Remember how "terrible" our line was with RJ and then the same line miraculously became better the next week when he was replaced by Flutie. I'm sick of QB's that will do well in a skills competition in the combine or in Hawaii! Give me a guy that can read defenses, make a quick decision and throw accurately. He doesn't need to have the strongest arm, throw the tightest spiral or have the best delivery if he can do the above well. -

If the Bills had taken Leinart with that pick ...
Ray replied to ***PetrinoInAlbany***'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We'd still be watching a project QB that may be good in 3 years. We would also be paying 12M/yr for the QB position for two QBs that arguably will never be great in the NFL. He lost two games in two weeks when he was given 11 turnovers to work with!!! That is pretty bad--- and he lost to Oakland. Arizona was by far the best fit for him (proximity to California, weather, very good WRs) and he still is a marginal QB. Buffalo is not a good fit for a guy living his entire life in California and who enjoys the glam life. -
How many "Bills" fans are comforted by Sabres?
Ray replied to Mr. T's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the Bills had an MLS team that went 10-0 would you be comforted? Nationally the NHL and MLS are very close with a slight edge to the NHL. I am very happy for the Sabres---but it's October!!!!! It's great they're off to a great start and gives sports fans in Buffalo something to cheer about. But for me, maybe it alleviates the suffereing of the Bills by 1-2%. Face it, football is king and the Bills are king in Buffalo. So when they stink there is not much to alleviate the pain. -
Stay Patient, Stay Rational, Stay the Course
Ray replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Having a QB like D Brees makes more of a difference than the coach. Having a great QB makes a huge difference. JP just isn't there yet. That's not to say he won't be, but right now he is very inconsistent. If Drew Brees was on this team I bet we're better than 2-4! If Bellichick has Bledsoe and not Brady he doesn't win 3 SBs. Having a great QB dramatically helps every phase of the game. Scoring points and consuming time helps the defense become better. It's just part of the game. I think the coaching staff has helped JP progress much better than last year. They kept him in games after starting horribly and he turned around and made some really nice plays. I think that is one of the most encouraging signs for fans! JP seems to be able to turn things around after making earlier mistakes. -
That'll really help. Are they going to give him a big bonus to play one year? I'm sure he would have been the difference in them not losing to the Titans at home (the Titans are worse than the Lions!!!)

Travis played with a lot more heart than it looks like McGahee does. Sometimes Willis is there and sometimes he is not. That was one of Donahoe's huge mistakes. He could have taken a DL or OL (where we really needed help) instead of a luxury pick that year. Travis always came to play, played hard, and was a guy who loved o play for the Bills. He has done as much as McGahee in this league. I like Willis, but I wish he would show up every week. Sometimes he just seems so slow. There were times yesterday he had daylight but was so slow hitting the hole. NE is a big game so I think he'll come to play next week--we can only hope.

Run the ball for 1 yard a play? That is not effective either. You need to be able to do both. If your passing game is terrible your running game will be as well and vice versa. Running the ball has not gotten us too far either b/c we don't run the ball well!!! Willis has had openings and just been too slow to hit them and hit them effectively. You have to have balance on offense. That means you have to be able to pass short, long, distribute the ball to different receivers and of course run. I didn't see the run game help us too much yesterday. As a matter of fact it put us at a disadvantage.

Memo to Bills Daily staff and my fellow fans
Ray replied to JPL7's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Rational thought? On this board and Billsdaily????? Come on! The Bengals got beat by a worse winless team. Put this in perspective. Watch the rest of the NFL and you'll see just as many bad plays, dumb plays and bad teams except a few. Be happy you're not a Redskins game to lose to the winless Titans AT HOME! This game pretty much went how I thought a lot of games this season would go. They would look aful, and then do some great things. Losman looked really bad but then made some unbelievable plays (Parrish TD, the long TD drive). Hey, Detroit is not that bad a team--are te Seahawks that bad? This is an average to below average team guys. I think most people realize that. I for one am also tired of it but we knew that coming into the season that is how it would be (an average at best team). We need a big time DT and probably a very good LB to be good on defense again. Hope JP develops b/c that is te biggest obstacle holding this team back. He still make decisions slowly. -
No offense, I like the Sabres but they are about 1/100th the importance of the Bills to the area and fan base. They still have tix available for a 19k arena for the season opener. I am amazed how much WGR talks about hockey in October! Who cares? It's October--you have a NFL team that is playing competitively right now going into a big game! No offense hockey fans (and I like the Sabres) but nobody on a national level really cares about the NHL. It has about as much fan interest as the MLS. It's national network is the OLV network. Let's talk about football and the NFL! Heck it's MLB playoffs as well and there is a lot more excitement about that than hockey. Let's get excited if the Sabres are good in April when nothing else goes on in sports!
