I disagree.  At some point we need to see consistent progress.  Everyone loves to use the “raw” excuses but he’s had over a year in the league and by now we should see some signs of progress.  I’m not really seeing much other than inconsistency.

This leads me to believe that there was some sort of financial compensation between the Bills and Reid.  It’s interesting because the other 2 founders didn’t seem to know about this earlier in the morning.

So either there was an agreement with Reid and he didn’t tell the others.  Or the Bills reached out to him and smoothed things over.

Its also interesting that it took Del until 3:00 PM when the topic was trending earlier in the morning.

To confuse Fitz with Tannehill and Carr is a little crazy.  Fitz was not rated high coming into the league and Fitz plays above his ability no matter who his coach is.  But Fitz is who he is.  He has done it every year, he raises his team to new heights until it matters.  He has never lead his team to a playoff win but he doesn't lead a team to 0-16 fame even though some deserve it.

Fitz has never led a team to the playoffs

I don't even see the games with NE as players vs. players. It's McDermott vs. Belichick. Take Belichick every time IMO. McDermott is just too slow to adjust, if they even have good contingencies in the first place...

True...but to be fair, if games were coach vs. coach Belichick would win most times

Most preseason predictions, along with Las Vegas, had us as a 9-win team. A fair and reasonable prediction given our schedule and the questions at QB. While it seems the QB questions have been answered, I'd say that Josh's development has been "balanced" by some Defensive regression to keep us about equal to where we were starting. With that said...

    We are currently 3-0.

That means, if you believe 9-7 is still a likely outcome with this schedule, we are looking at going 6-7 the rest of the way (yikes).

I see 2 more wins coming from the Dolphins and Jets, and expect to split with the Pats. So that leaves 3 other wins.

Broncos and Chargers are probably the rest of the "obvious" wins. Leaving only 1 more win out of Raiders, Titans, Chiefs, Seahawks, Cardinals, 49ers, and Steelers.

I'd have to think we can get a win from one of those better teams*. But could also see us dropping a stinker against the Broncos or something (sorry, BBFS).

So sitting at 3-0, and getting a head start on our record, how do YOU see the rest of the season playing out? Can we get to 10-6? Are we mentally prepared to go 6-7 the rest of the way?

edit to clarify: When I say "those better teams", I mean that as "the better teams on our schedule", not "teams that are better than us". I also believe we can certainly beat more than 1 of them.

Just crazy to think that with this good start, we could be looking at 10-11 wins even with a tough schedule. Also steeling myself to understand that even if we do go 6-7 the rest of the way, we still have a good shot at the division since I dont see the Pats being much better.

I think 9-7 or 10-6 is a very realistic possibility.  But sadly 8-8 is as well unless the tram fixes the defense.

The AFC East games will be huge.  I can’t underscore that enough HUUUUUUUUGE,.  Especially New England.  I’m very nervous to see what Belichick will have in store because I can assure you he’ll take the same approach to attack the Bills as Vrabel did

You sure about Harrison Phillips? Seems like he has been a big part of the much improved run D the past 2 weeks. Jacobs averaged 3.2 YOC and Henry 3.0 YPC. Neither got to 60 yards.

He helped at times for sure but I saw him getting pushed backward last night.

    1 minute ago, TheProcess said:

Agree. Aside from not setting the edge at all last night, the run defense has been cleaned up since the Rams ran wild. It’s the lack of pass rush and poor pass defense that’s killing us. Teams pass at will on us.

Edmunds has been a major liability for us thus far. Can’t shed blocks in the run game (probably not helped by his shoulder) and doesn’t appear to be in position with his length to effect the middle of the field in the pass game like he has the past few years. Seems like he’s always mixed up in the wash and slow to react.

It’s the middle of the field that remains open.  Edmunds is a huge reason why as is Tauron Johnson.  The problem is that the Bills were counting on both this year so the depth at MLB and CB is poor.

    I strongly disagree with that.

Like I said, Oliver has flashed at times - last week’s 4th down stop comes to mind.  But I think in 20+ games we have yet to see him really disrupt an entire offense the way other high draft picks have.

  7. 10 hours ago, Do The Reich Thing said:

One word sums up this Bills defense right now. “Exposed”

Finally, tonight, we got a taste of what the rest of this season will be like if the offense doesn’t carry us in a game. For the first four weeks our offense was so good that it overshadowed how bad the defense has been. I’m on record as being a part of this group. Saying, “oh they’ll figure it out, it’s early in the season and all defenses have been ” or “oh they haven’t been that bad.”

From top to bottom this group has been awful all season. You can say we missed Tre and Milano in particular tonight, but they were bad with them when they have played. I’ll start first with defensive line:

There has been little to no penetration, contain and pass rush from the entire line. Far and away Quinton Jefferson has been the best defensive lineman. He’s the only guy that has performed well some of the time. Where is Jerry Hughes? What about Ed Oliver? Harrison Phillips? Mario Addison? Trent Murphy? AJ E? It is beyond frustrating to consistently see QBs have all day to throw. And even when they have all day to throw the ends can’t set the edge so the QB just breaks the pocket and makes a play. Run defense has been alright, but that will get you nowhere in today’s NFL if you can’t stop the pass.

Linebackers next: Man what an overall disappointment it is to write about this group. Klein can’t cover, Edmunds has regressed to being as bad as Eddie Robinson, and Matt Milano is average, but some say he’s a star because he’s the best of a poor performing group. Dodson has showed some flashes in his limited time and Lewis played hard tonight but is clearly undersized. Nonetheless, no matter who it is, gaps aren’t being filled, they can’t cover and they’re just running into blockers when they try to blitz.

Defensive Backs: All of these factors listed above lead to a bad secondary. Idc if you have Deion and Darrell Green out there. They would be bad with the front two levels performing this badly. Combine this with guys who also can’t cover you get what the secondary looks like right now. Taron Johnson... woof. Tre White has been bad when he’s played this year. Josh Norman and Levi Wallace are both meh. And our coveted safety duo has not performed up to par.

Moving forward, where do we go on defense? Do we make a trade? Do we change the scheme? Do we keep riding the wave and hope it all evens out? Something else? The talent on most levels of the defense is there. This group has performed to a high level before, so it suggests the personnel is there. I don’t have the answers, but they need to fix it now. Tonight was a wake up call.

TL;DR - The defense has been bad all year and the issues are no longer overshadowed by our offense. What do we do?

I will boil everything down to a few things:

The defensive line not been good.  They did a terrible job with contain which was a strength last season.  They get pushes around in the middle and aren’t great at rushing the passer.  Still, I think this unit has the best chance to get better.

Linebackers are an issue.  I think you undersold Milano just a little bit.  He’s a solid player who is very good at coverage and decent against the run.  The defense has always missed h

when he’s been out.  Edmunds has been a liability and has not been very good.  It makes you wonder what the Bills saw in AJ Klein because he’s been just as bad.

Cornerbacks also have been poor.  Tre wasn’t having the best year.  Levi Wallace is serviceable.  Norman is below average and Tauron Johnson has been the worst of the group.

It’s going to be a major undertaking to fix things on defense

  8. We all love Brandon  Beane who has made a lot of great moves as GM.  But when you look at the players he drafted - particularly on the defensive side of the ball, they aren’t looking so good.

The Bills preach “draft, develop, resign” and while this has worked for picks like White and Milano, the high to mid-round draft picks Beane has made are not making the difference you would expect.  I know that it takes time to develop but we’re 2 seasons in and the excuses are running out. You will notice that severa players on this list stood out last night in a defensive meltdown for the wrong reasons.

    Tremaine Edmunds - Round 1, Pick 16   2018

Yes he’s young and he has been injured this year, but his weaknesses haven’t seemed to change much since his rookie year.  Good coverage LB, but a major liability against the run.  Unfortunately he hasn’t made any strides in shedding blocks and has missed too many tackles. Not good enough for an MLB in this defense. Bills have a tough decision on his option at the end of the year.

    Harrison Phillips - Round 3, Pick 96  2018

He had shown promise last season but seems to be having a tough time coming back from ACL surgery.  Right now he’s just another guy on defense and maybe a below average DT since his return.

    Tauron Johnson - Round 4, Pick 122  2018

Opposite of Edmunds - good run CB, a liability in the pass game.  He has been a major weakness this year and maybe THE biggest weakness.

    Ed Oliver - Round 1, Pick 8 2019

Oliver has shown flashes at times but seems to be invisible for long stretches.  So far he hasn’t been been as effective as fellow 2019 DL’s like Quinnen  Williams or Jeffrey Simmons have been.   Out of all the picks on the list, I feel he has the most upside.  Still you’d like to see him do more in year 2.

    AJ Epinesa - Round 2, Pick 54

Very very early to make a call on this pick, but so far  there hasn’t been anything that stands out.  Also the Offside penalty was a killer.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I think the offensive picks have been pretty good.  But it seems like a lot of the struggles can be attributed to the lack of development of draft picks who are called upon for big roles.

Probably getting fired in Philly if so we need to bring him back to run this defense the right way.

People here are dismissing the human element of the situation.  McDermott is a defensive-minded coach and has a long history with Leslie Frazier.  The two seem closely aligned when it comes to defensive philosophy and personality.

If the defense continues to struggle, I have no doubt, Sean will consider making a move, but it’s likely not Schwartz.  I don’t feel he’d be a good fit given the personality of McDermott.  Also he’d be firing one DC who led a bad defense, for another DC who led a bad defense.

I like that you grade the QB on his performance rather than the outcome of the game.

This was definitely the worst game by Josh this year, but it wasn't terrible. I think B-/C+ is fair.

I would agree with a B.  The Bills had no running game going which put them behind the sticks quite a bit - yet he still converted some 3rd downs.

The INT was a killer though.  If you are going to give Allen a C, what are your grades for some other players?

I mean, 3rd and 19, he has two dudes running wide open up the middle of the field for a first down to choose from.

That’s been every game this year.  We take away deep shots, for the most part, but underneath/intermediate stuff is open with hardly any resistance.

That’s on the LB’s.... Edmunds is just bad.  At this point the Bills should just sign Nigel Bradham

    and sit Edmunds

WD40.....Bills seriously need to stack box and force Tanny to throw and get an interception or two.

It all goes back to stopping the run.  If they don’t stop the run, then Tannehill is going to use ply action to complete short passes underneath which could go for big gains.  This should be a concern because Edmunds, Dodson, and Klein all were vulnerable to play action vs Miami and LAR

Deion Lewis In Atlanta is Probably the best cover LB in football and would be an upgrade over Milano. Doubt they trade him.

I just don’t see the Bills trading for anyone, the biggest wow, would be a FA signing for someone still out there.

It makes a lot of sense on paper, but I can’t see whoever is calling in the shots in Atlanta making big roster moves as an interim.  From a coaching standpoint, Morris is going to eat the to win as many games as possible to either win the Atlanta job or end up as a HC or DC elsewhere.  Trading away one of the best players on defense doesn’t help him win now.

There were also people clamoring for the Bills to trade for Myles Jack.  I can’t see Jacksonville trading him for the same reasons.  They need to win now

You want a semi-realistic fantasy trade?

JJ Watt. He has a 15.5M cap hit with no dead cap penalty (which makes it a lot more appealing to the Texans).

The Bills would either trade (but likely cut) Trent Murphy, saving saving about 8M in Cap space, add that to the 4.5M in cap, get the Texans to convert 3M of his salary to a salary bonus, send them a 21 1st, and a 22 2nd, and  the Bills would have a stud DE, who they are free to extend or cut in 21 with no dead cap penalties.

Do you honestly see an interim GM trading  a captain and one of the most-respected members on the Texans to benefit the franchise in the future, when they might not be employed in Houston 4 months from now?

Maybe the new GM makes this move but not the lame duck.

THIS!!!!  No way do I see the Bills pulling the feelgood fanboy illogical move of bringing Fitz to sit behind Josh.....agreed that the thought of Barkley trotting out on the field does give me nightmares but the thought of paying Firtz when there are going to be many mouths, younger and more deserving mouths to feed.....uhhhhh I'll pass.

    Go Bills!!

I would agree... the only counter about paying that salary to the backup is what happened to Dak last night.  Dallas has several big contracts on the cap and still managed to pay Andy Dalton $7M to backup Dak.  It’s insurance - There was a good chance he wouldn’t play as Dak has never been injured.  But now, he appears to a be a QB that will keep them in the terrible NFC East division race.

  14. I came across this on Twitter:

Based on Josh’s injury last week and the heartbreaking injury to Dak, how would you feel about Fitzpatrick coming back to Buffalo in 2021 to end his career as a Bill?  By next season Josh should be solidified as the unquestioned starter, so I don’t feel Fitzpatrick would be a threat, especially since Josh and Fitz seem to be friendly.  I also think he’d be an excellent  teacher to help Josh continue to get better.

On the other hand, the cap hit for Fitz would ($7-$8M) would be considerably higher than what we are paying the 2 QB’s on the roster combined.  With a monster deal for Allen on the horizon, as well as potential contract extensions for Milano and maybe Edmunds, the cap situation could get tight and the team may not want to invest that much in a QB.

The other question, is whether Fitz would want to come Buffalo, where he wouldn’t be given a chance to compete?  Or would he look for a better situation behind a QB on shaky ground?

You might also argue that Josh doesn’t need Fitzpatrick around as a mentor and could get by with a backup like Barkley.

Either way, as a fan of Fitzpatrick, I would love to see him finish out his career in Buffalo.
