They published it now because the current climate will foster the most reads and discussion. It's a "kick them while they're down" mentality or maybe more appropriately a "pour gasoline on the fire" mentality, but it's not about derailing the team. It's about getting the most business.

You wait until the team is already derailing/losing and the media market is in a frenzy, and then you release the article. Not the other way around.

    Agree and disagree.

This is going to generate clicks/business whenever it gets released.

It becomes a bigger distraction in season, when the team is still in a playoff race.

That's the "agenda" that Dunne has, is getting Sean fired

If that article is the best example of players supporting McD, then McD is sunk. And all this article talks about is McD again addressing his 9/11 speech with the team.

Ok, so Hyde, which we already knew. Let's see what the Offensive players have to say in pouring out support and love for their coach...

Nothing major from Sherfield there other than stating the obvious. We know McD doesnt support terrorism.

    How about from the rook...

Hmm, how about from the vet Latavius Murray...

Ok, so a whole lot of talking about McD again addressing the speech from 2019. But not a single quote about how wrong the article is, and nothing about it misrepresenting McD or how the players feel.

Maybe they just weren't asked the right question. But I've had great bosses/leaders and if something like this came out about them, I would be front and center to whoever would listen railing against the BS.

Reid Ferguson had the most supportive quote

What are the players being asked?

I think this is player support.  They all specifically say "I know who Sean is"/what kind of coach he is.

That's obviously support, outside of Torrence- both Murray and Sherfield "chose" to play here for this team and coach.  They are reaffirming they know who Sean is, which reaffirms their decision to play here.

They could have easily just said Sean spoke to us, leave it at that.  Too many ppl reading into this

Having an agenda is not wrong. Everyone has an agenda. An agenda is what drives a person to say what they want to say. You can't deny information if it is legitimate and true. You can say you don't like the spin, but you can't deny the information.

From the business aspect of journalism, it's all about timing. It's less about an agenda and more about how much support the article would get in the current climate.

No matter what an article is about, part of their goal is to make sure it gets read and discussed by the most people possible. In this case, it's gonna get read and discussed by a lot more people when the Bills are down than when they are up.

So, journalists are often sitting on a story they would love to release right away, but they (or their bosses tell them to) sit on it until the time is right.

Exactly.  It's the timing that bothers me the most.  Content/messaging about MCD, some ppl read into it as a personal attack while others may not.  I think it is, but having that "agenda" is part of being a journalist/writing an opinion.

Timing is everything. Just like the "supposed" Brittany feud with Josh, night before Bengals playoff game.  True or not, just making mention that the timing influences and impacts alot.  Why did Dunne publish now?  It would seem tat he wants it to derail McD/team, otherwise wait until after season

  4. Admittedly, I haven't read every comment/78 pages up until now.

Why is Dunne releasing this story/article now/right before our biggest game of season?

There's obviously an agenda, even if you aren't convinced by his narrative in general.

Like or dislike McD as our head coach, the article went over the top - on a personal level.  Coaching errors/mismanagement in key situations/etc, fine...but this article went further.

Creates an unnecessary distraction, during a critical gameplanning/lead up to game.  Wait until end of season/offseason.

Perhaps this is an additional catalyst for our performance, let's hope, but Dunne is dead to me now.  Not that he cares, but it's unprofessional and hope he realizes there is a right way /time/more appropriate way to go about this.  Not to mention interviewing some "pro-McD" sources, but perhaps they don't wanna waste their time with someone like Dunne.

All I know is that if the Bills lose this game with these key Chiefs players out, they better lock down Orchard Park afterwords and get McDummy private security from all the pitchforks.

As much as I hate the guy I actually feel sorry for him right now, if anything because of the tremendous pressure and fact I think they still end up losing this game despite the Chiefs being the most banged up they have all season.

In fairness, Bills have : Milano, Daquan, Tre all out.

Yes, we've had to deal with it and Chiefs just got hit suddenly.

No excuses, we still need to win.  But let's not paint a picture of an unhealthy Chiefs vs healthy Bills squad.

We are coming off a bye/rest, that's our advantage..plain and simple

Yeah too high for my liking still, given Browns play this yr.  But I'm for Bpa.

Since we have just 1 3rd rounder now, I'd rather see Wr round 1, then S/DT with our next picks.

DT is an obvious early choice, given our lack of depth going forward

Torrence got off to a really strong start to his rookie season, but I have noticed a few rookie mistakes over the last few weeks surprisingly in run-blocking plays.

Overall, I think he is having an overall solid rookie year, and has the potential to be a Pro-Bowl level Guard for years to come.

Another good pick by Beane over the last few years.....yes he absolutely whiffed on the Elam pick, but he added 3 starters in that Draft(Cook, Bernard, Benford) and the picks of Kincaid, Torrence, and D. Williams are all looking quite promising.

    Thoughts??

Agree, Torrence has at least been reliable/consistent for us (something we've lacked).

Agree on Beane in general, hitting on starters/key depth.

Problem has been finding/hitting on "stars", Kincaid has the look of a future star though.  To keep up with big dogs, we need to find 1 every few seasons.  I'd say we're back on track, if Kincaid continues to be a force.  Ed has been a "star", need more though in general.

The other problem has been the FA ROI on DL.  Finally hit on 2 key ones, in Floyd/Daquan.  But both FAs after this season. Going to need to keep "hitting" on his $4-$7m investments rentals.  I like his approach, and getting Von looked great until the ACL, but we are now getting "old" and alot of cap tied up in serious-injured players

  10. Perhaps been said already, but guessing that Von/Diggs commercial just got retired.

Horribel situation, I feel bad for G/F (victim), if true...admittedly I might have missed recent info.

Team might catch a break with Vons contract.

If this was Josh (and it never would be), he'd be getting the "Big Ben" / rehab image treatment.  So let's not fool ourselves about any moral high ground of team (guessing majority of fans as well).

Are you aware of how restructuring works? It’s not magic free money. Restructuring Diggs and Oliver makes little sense to me.

    1) Diggs only has 3 years left on his contract after next season. Restructuring makes those last 3 years nearly impossible. We could free up $14M in cap space this off-season but then Diggs cap would be well over $30 million after that. His cap hit would be $31M in 2025, $32M in 2026 and $26M in 2027. Then what?  And he would be untradeable and impossible to cut (ever), since his dead cap would be more than $20M every single year going forward. I can almost guarantee the Bills don’t do this.

    2) You said you want to restructure Oliver. Doing so would only save $1.6M. I guess we could do this, but it would be paltry.

Allen is the only reasonable restructure from the players you mentioned.

With this plan, we need at least 6 new starters.

SS, FS, C, NCB, DT, DE.

Realistically, Diggs and Milano dead cap is too high ($20+M each).

I guess we shall see, but Allen/Diggs are surefire restructures IMO.  Ed was added as an easy, afford another depth player.  Beane liked his $1.7m rentals, which is what Ed would create.

Needing 4-6 new starters, and likely 5-7 new primary/key backups, is the direction we are heading regardless.  Starters: WR2, SS, FS, C / Key backups: Slot WR, Safety, OL, DT-2x, DE-2x... Beane will likely look to bring back Daquan.  Then to the draft for filling a few backup roles (DT/DE, Safety/CB, OL) and starters (WR2, Safety, if we're lucky a C to compete).

Main point, we easily can make moves to get under the cap.  Difficult players to cut, but Beane had to realize that coming into the season (at least WRT Poyer/Hyde and Morse..Tre is unfortunate).  It's a re-load through the draft and hope to find 2-3 1 yr rental guys to fill roles.  Again, it's the vet/leadership that will need replaced which is the difficult part..but we have a strong core already

We were discussing this in the Von Miller thread, but thought maybe it wasn't wise to continue cluttering that thread with cap talk.

We are currently $42 million over the cap for next season. That number assumes the NFL increases the salary cap increases, from the current cap of $224.8M to $243.9M (technically we are about $62 million over at the moment), plus rollover.

    cap1431.jpg

    Getting under the cap

If we release Dion Dawkins, Tre White, Taron Johnson, Mitch Morse, Jordan Poyer, Deonte Harty, and Nyheim Hines, we can get down to almost $0 (-413,780) cap space.

Obviously this doesn't include restructures yet. But we can't just endlessly keep kicking the can down the road.

    dfsvds.jpg

If we do NOT release one of those starters, you can add the following to our cap negative by this amount:

Keeping Dawkins: Add $4.8M to cap negative.
Keeping White: Add $6.2M to cap negative.
Keeping Taron: Add $7.7M to cap negative.
Keeping Morse: Add $8.5M to cap negative.
Keeping Poyer: Add $5.5M to cap negative.

Key players that will have to be re-signed or let walk

Micah Hyde: Contract expires this offseason.
Daquan Jones: Contract expires this offseason.

Leonard Floyd: Contract expires this offseason.

    Summary

We are $42M over the estimated 2024 cap, with Jones, Floyd and Hyde contract expiring. We will need a mixture of releasing starters, and re-structuring current deals, in order to get enough cap to draft players.

We are likely going to have to restructure Allen, and then replace a lot of starters with very little money.

    .

So much analysis and drama, when all that's needed is:

    1. Restructure: Allen, Diggs, Oliver

    2. Cut: Poyer, Tre, Hyde, Morse

    Potential:

    3. Restructure: Dion, Rasul (extend), and/or Knox (unlikely), Bates

    4. Cut: Neal, Taron (50/50 chance), Hines, Harty

That gets us back into fairly decent cap position for 2024, continuing to kick the can, but not waste a prime Josh/Diggs year.

Then go into FA/draft focused on:

    1. Wr2

    2. DT: 1 tech (possible Daquan)

    3. Safety: both SS and FS (seen Sean find Poyer/Hyde in 1 offseason...expect we go for 1 draft / 1 vet)

    4. Nickle corner- depending on Taron, I'd think we don't reset 4 starters in 1 offseason tho

    5. Depth: Then go find 1 year vet deals/young depth at ALOT of positions- top of order would be DE

I could see draft focused on WR, Safety, DL, OL/C.  Need Elam to "develop" into at least our 3rd boundary corner.

Gabe, AJE, others will walk.  Need to be very strict with new long-term deals.  Either said player is a proven/likely budding star, or we let them walk.  1 year cheap deals for depth, ie: Dane, Cam, etc is fine.

2024 will be a "retooling" year on defense, but has potential to put our offense in a great position for success.  Hit on Wr2 and a younger compliment to Cook, this offense could take off.

About the Texas “No Drop” Policy

Texas has passed legislation to make sure that domestic violence charges are taken very seriously. Our state’s “no drop” policy means that, even if someone in your household wants to drop domestic violence charges, they do not have the power to do so on their own.

Domestic violence charges are brought by the prosecutor—not the alleged victim of domestic violence. Under Texas law, it’s the prosecutor’s decision whether to drop charges. Even if the alleged victim later changes their mind, they do not have the authority to drop charges on their own.

Instead, the prosecutor must be persuaded to drop the assault charges. It’s not impossible to accomplish, but it requires specific legal action and strategy.

Convincing a Prosecutor to Drop Domestic Violence Charges

Your partner or household member can’t decide to drop charges on their own, so your lawyer may need to emphasize other facts of your case. Each case is different, but a lawyer may emphasize a client’s lack of any past criminal record. They may also look to the facts of the case to help convince prosecutors that the charges need to be dropped.

Why Does Texas Have a “No Drop” Policy?

Our state’s “no drop” policy is tied to psychological research about the nature of abusive relationships. Abusive relationships often follow a cycle of gradual escalation of violence until a dramatic and significant episode. That episode is often followed by a period of calm during which the abuser tries to make it up to their partner.

Prosecutors are concerned that their clients will make statements directly after a violent episode, and then take them back when things are calm again—even though there’s likely to be a gradual escalation of violence in the future.

Prosecutors are also concerned that abusive partners will pressure their victims into recanting out of fear. The state’s strict “no drop” policy is designed to protect against these situations.

Von is in deep poop, he cannot just make this go away.

We shall see.  Deep poop if the she continues and stays consistent with her story/collaborated with the supposed recording she started on her phone (as the situation progressed).

The optics look horrible, so if she sticks with her story (and we haven't heard Von's yet), then it will be a PR issue and likely lead to his release.

  14. Looking at remaining games, I think Steelers and Texans/Broncos (winner this weekend) are near locks.

I'll be rooting for Texans and for them to close the season strong...this would help potentially eliminate Denver, Colts, and the big one...Browns.

To me Cleveland at 7-4 is ripe to fall apart down the stretch/we need that to happen.  Can't see Steelers with their weak schedule and strong coaching/defense.  Browns with a rookie backup has ability to be upset:

Need Cle to get 4 losses - starting this weekend with Rams.  Then Jags, get them on a 3 game losing streak.  They finish with Bears, Texans, Jets, and Bengals. Bears are playing better, Texans (mentioned above it helps if they knock off other teams), and Bengals (could they help us sneak in again)?

This assumes we finish 10-7 and would have to have other AFC teams with 9 wins.

  15. I think most fans would agree:

we've overvalued "running it back", with some players that know the system but their better days behind them OR flat out ignored upgrading: Poyer/Hyde/Shaq/Phillips/Settle meet criteria 1, Davis/Dodson criteria 2

I just don't know how much is on Beane vs Coach, with personnel decisions.

IMHO, we aren't a SB team without getting better starters at: WR2, at least 1 safety/likely both, C, RT (I think Spencer has shown improvement, but we'd still be better off finding a longterm option that could bump to LT in a year or two)

Better depth at: Dt (especially 1 tech, but also another 3 tech rusher), LB, and safety.

Beane made some great decisions too, but his best one is a 1 yr guy in Floyd.

Worth repeating that we've practically wasted a Rd1, two RD2, and 1 RD3 in his tenure...not to mention the FA $$$ on some key DL misses.

Said it yesterday, Beane got us Josh and Diggs.  Those are HUGE, and perhaps Kincaid turns into a star.  BUT, he's done a poor job complementing/surrounding Josh with a better supporting cast (OL/WR2).  Bunch of depth guys are helpful, but need more firepower.  On defense, even with "running it back", we had a very good unit until injuries hit.  Speed in secondary has been an issue for 3 years now, just getting worse.

All that to say, I think any decision on MCD, should also include Beane. Package deal IMO, both are Tier 2 caliber.

Hopefully everyone watches this, especially those who posted since last night blaming Gabe.

I said it last night, Josh didn't see the corner had inside leverage (pressure in his face).  I had no idea how the corner got inside, but now makes sense that Eagles switched off.  Credit Philly secondary on that, they've obviously seen us run that route combo with Diggs/Davis and made a great switch off.

You'd hope Josh would see that, but difficult to blame him for that.  Goal was to get 1-1, not against Slay.  Looking back, rather us give Diggs that "option" route and take our chances best on best.

Let's see what all-22 shows tomorrow, and revisit.  We will have a perfect view/angle to observe.  Still won't know the "hot read"/read that Gabe and Josh have with that defensive look... but will see if the post was even open.  I'm still in the opinion that the Eagles CB took away that route intentionally, and we weren't completing it anyhow given the CB leverage.

One thing for sure, Billls will start to consider if these "option" routes are worth the risk in critical situations.  It's a heavy focus in our current scheme/Dorseys.

Loses to the Jets, Broncos, and Patriots really sunk the season. The offense has looked completely different since Joe Brady took over. Now the offense is clicking but we are now left with zero room for error the rest of the way. McDermott defense wasn’t solid today but they had been playing well up until today. We just put ourselves in a terrible hole due to the terrible offensive play earlier in the year. We waited too long to fire Dorsey

    No doubt, 100% agree.

Been saying since LY, Dorsey is a SUPER smart coordinator,  but he's ADHD out there.  No rhythm/too emotional/overthinking situations.

His communication in press conferences showed his personality/issues.  He's almost like that professor in college that was "too smart", couldn't communicate effectively/put too much into weekly gameplans for Josh.

I think his concepts were good, Brady is using those same concepts right now. Difference is Brady is simplifying some of the weekly playcalls and playsheets.

Still lacking some WR talent, but we might have our coordinator.  2 straight games with improved/consistent results, and fewer turnovers

I will probably get flamed for this thread, but here goes - can we have a real conversation about Diggs' drop off this year? He has not been his usual special self since the London game. He's dropped a bunch of passes recently and now has two INTs on the year that were ripped out of his hands. I miss the days when Diggs was putting CBs like Marshon Lattimore and Jalen Ramsey on skates. This year he is getting locked down pretty easily by true #1 CBs.

I mean just to be clear Diggs is far from our biggest problem on offense, but when the ancillary weapons are so below average you really need your #1 guy to be at the top of the elite tier and Diggs just hasn't been that guy this year. I worry that he is reaching that age where WRs start to hit a wall, and once it starts it can get bad fast.

    Flame away.

You won't be flamed by me.

Funny how so many rip on McD though, including you, then post "facts" like these - that are player talent related.

At Wr: other than trading for Diggs, what weapons has Beane added?  And yes, Diggs isn't his 2020 elite self anymore-age/banged up/etc leads to that.

I could mention other positions that Beane has missed on/neglected.

But specifically to Diggs... he's not lost a step, but no longer going to be elite/consistent weapon much longer.  Very good, yes, but he needs more than just Kincaid as a supporting weapon.

I was ALL IN on the Zay Flowers train, not upset since we landed Dalton. But that's the type of skill set we need opposite Stefon.

Beane should have been investing these 2nd-3rd rounders in WRs instead of RBs.  Like some educated posters have mentioned, but worth repeating, RBs are dime a dozen.  I like James, but one could argue that the Ty Johnson/Latavius Murray/Damien Harris (if healthy) type talents are easy to find and cheap (either late rounds or FA every year).

Elite QB, WRs, and OL should be focus.   Then a 'luxury' to find a stud RB.  But can find speed/talent at RB in late rounds every draft, ie: Mitchell (Ravens), Pachecho (Chiefs), Warren (Steelers), etc.  Especially in an era of "rb by committee".

All to say, Beane needs to be investing more resources, and hitting, on WRs via draft/FA.
