Hard to criticize him.  That’s life changing money.  Not sure why UB didn’t insist on a higher buyout though in the contract extension.  They took a pretty big chance on him when they gave him the job to replace Hurley.  Alabama job had to be in the works for a couple weeks.  Alabama athletic department is swimming in money.  They would’ve paid a lot more than $750k to buy Oats out.

Not hard to criticize him when he signed a new extension, spent weeks saying he wasn’t going to make a move like this, and even got high school kids to commit to UB under his vision.

Then when he does take the job, Nate is no where to be found and won’t answer questions from the Buffalo media.

Seems like this could’ve been handeled better.  Fans deserve more of any explanation than the weak ass PR statement he put out.

I agree UB should’ve had a bigger buyout in the extension

Barring a really bad collapse, see them making it at least to 2020,  if then were real bad the next two years, can see McD getting fired, but GM's often get to go through two coaches, so could see Beane still hanging on and hiring another coach.  Worst case Allan's a failure so the team is also terrible, but if you fire him for that, you better plan to fire many others too as the success rate for QB's is less than 50/50 to begin with.

The difference is....most coaches don’t get any input who the GM is.  I am telling you McDermott’s situation in the NFL is pretty unique.

People have to be realistic here. Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa has a 16,000 seat capacity. Alumni Arena has a capacity of 7k and is not exactly state of the art. UB Stadium holds 29,000!

UB is a MAC school. What they've done recently has been OUTSTANDING. Gonzaga is an outlier as their stadium only holds 6k. But they've built a brand that's darn near impossible to emulate. It would be great if UB were a powerhouse, but there's very little basis to believe it will become a national brad. I hope they continue to build on their success.

I get that....but Oats also went on WGR and other media outlets after signing his extension and talked how how he wanted to stay in Buffalo and be the “Gonzaga of the East.”  If he wasn’t serious, he never should’ve signed the extension or talked about his dedication to the area.

Then he makes the decision and doesn’t talk to the press.  It’s not a good look for him

    Nate screwed over those kids.

  4. I have little respect for Oats. He made it a point to say that he’s staying in Buffalo and even signed an extension.

Yet he’s too much of a chump to take the heat and talk about why he left for Alabama.  The dude is a chump....good coach....but a chump.

Pro sports is a performance based business and if a player can't do his job he is replaced. Why shouldn't the HC, GM or assistant coach get the same?

After last years draft/ FA Beane isn't going anywhere! McD OTOH needs to have a winning season to at least 8-8, 9-7 or better.

Not it is not that simple.

You have to consider the context here.  There are few coaches in the NFL that allegedly have as much power as Sean mcDermott does in Buffalo.  Keep in mind that since his hire he made huge changes on the field but also in the organization.  This included the removal of long time employees and possibly even the firing/hiring of a new GM.

He has a lot of power at OBD, and I don’t think his situation is unique.  Bills could have another 6-10 year....he’s coming back in 2020 guaranteed.  Maybe even 2021

"Continuity" is important to Pegula, huh..?

    Remember when he said this?:

We’re talking about continuity, and the players need that,” Pegula said. “Our coach needs to know that, through the good and the bad, there’s stability. The players need to know there’s stability. And by the way, that doesn’t help our players any to start reading that their coach is going to get fired.”

That was just weeks before he fired Rex.

And the Sabres have simply quit with 6 games left.  It's been a disaster since Pegula Day 1 for that sad franchise.

This is interesting.  We’ll see what Terry does but my instinct based on his comments are that Phil is staying.

This is apples and oranges.  The Bills went to the playoffs two seasons ago under the current regime and from all appearances know what they're doing and are progressing.  The Sabres, on the other hand, are pure regression.  One season is worse than the last.  The team right now isn't.  Housley is in way over his head, appears to have no plan, and is an embarrassment who should have been fired by now.  The jury is out on Botterill, but based on the O'Reilly give away, looks less than stellar.  The Bills ship is thus righted while the Sabres ship is titanically sinking.  Apples and oranges.

Not really considering that after winning 10 games in a row, they appeared to be making progress and had fans talking playoffs for the first time in years.  I wouldn’t say it’s a complete regression because they did get hot this year.

It sounded like Terry was laying the foundation for Housley's firing.

It did?  Because I felt the opposite?  It sounded like Terry was making every excuse for Housley.  I think he’s staying

  8. Listening to Kim and Terry at the owners meetings was interesting.  Despite it being an NFL owners meeting, the majority of questions were Buffalo Sabres related.  Specifically wondering how Terry and Kim will respond to a team with promise that currently is in a free fall.  Many fans are calling for the head of Phil Housley and given how the team has played over the past few months, it tough to suggest otherwise.

A topic that has been discussed in here has been the overall security of Beane and McDermott and the amount of pressure (or lack thereof) they are under to win.

It made me wonder how they’ll respond if the Bills take another step back record wise.  Let’s say they go 5-11 or 4-12.  Does it mean that McDermott and/or Beane will be axed it that they’ll be under the gun in 2020?

I’ve always thought that the both Beane and McDermott will be given the full 5 years of their contract.   I also think that the Pegulas are image conscious and don’t want to be the team which constantly fires coaches.  I think when they fired Rex and brought it McDermott they gave him their word that they would have patience and give him time to build his vision.

Based on how Terry and Kim have a the Housley situation, I believe this even more now. I noticed they used the word “patience” on more than 1 occasion and while Terry didn’t use the word “continuity” he basically alluded it by referencing New England.

So any fans that want say things like “Fire McDermott” or “Beane should be Fired.”  Will likely have to wait until 2021.  I think these cats are getting all 5 years regardless, under the guise of “patience” and “continuity.”  Yes even if they go 6-10 and 5-11, they still will get 2021.  Only way they leave before this is if there is some kind of falling out or a disasterous Hugh Jackson-like Run.

As part of the NFL's 100th anniversary celebration, the league is recognizing "Original Towns." Lovely Warren will take the stage along with a player or NFL alumni to announce the 6th round pick. Article in this morning's D&C. The Rochester Jeffersons were one of the 14 original NFL teams in 1920 and played from 1920-1925. Guess this is one of those cases where I'll need to respect the office if not the person.

    Terrible mayor.

I really do not think DT will be the pick...at 9...see us taking one later, but not at 9.  Oliver and Wilkins are getting a bit over exaggerated.  I wont be mad if we pick one of them, they are certainly good prospects.  But they are being talked about as if they are cant miss...and they are certainly not that nor are they as good as Quennin.

Plus, I keep saying it, but I think Beane and McD have a higher opinion of Harrison and Jordan and while they will add more competition to the DT position, I don't think they are nearly as panicked about it as some people on this board.

So for me, I think Beane will first try and trade down from 9.  If not successful, then I think the most likely pick will be an EDGE player, possibly DK or TJ for Allen.  I do think they will certainly draft DT, I just don't think it will be at 9.

Ideally, trade down from 9...pickup extra 2nd.  First 3 picks in rounds 1 and 2 could then be something like Hockenson (TE), Simmons/Tillery (DT), Wide Reciever (Best on board).  Or maybe its something like Harry (WR), Simmons/Tillery (DT), and Irv or maybe an OL guy like Risner, Lindstrom, etc.

But if we stay at 9 I feel like its most likely EDGE if its a defensive player.

I kind of agree.  I believe their first preference is to trade down and pick up an additional second round selection.  The Hockenson pick is interesting. He definitely didn’t shy away from saying he wouldn’t draft a tight end high in the first.

If I had to guess, I’d put my money on the Bills drafting the best DT or edge rusher available at 9.  I think they definitely go tight end and/or WR in round 2 or 3.

  11.

    Major Points:

    EJ Gaines

Brought EJ Gaines back to compete at CB.  Bills stayed in contact with his reps, brought him in for a workout, and signed him.  Levi Wallace had a great year but nothing is a given.  Competition makes everyone better and Bills will trying to add competition at every position.  Also mentioned Corey Thompson.

    Free Agency

    - Offensive stats were a focus of the offseason.  Wanted to bring in enough offensive players to select the BPA in the draft.

    - Beane feels better about the team after FA but still wants to add competition.  He is keeping all options open to adding talent - specifically mentioned possibly making a trade.

    - Free Agency is all about the "right fit"

    - There are no games won in March.  Adding talent is one thing, building a team is another.  Performance of free agents is not an automatic.  Bills staff still have a lot of work to do to make sure they get everything out of free agents.

    Improvements to the defensive line

    - Still looking to bring in players including Free Agency and the draft

    AAF Players

It's helpful to see players in actual football (as opposed to workouts)

Praises the AAF and feels it's good for the NFL

Failure of Tight Ends Drafted High

    Says each scenario is different

Teams have to do their due diligence and should draft the best player available regardless of position

    Shaq Lawson

Draft will have no impact on Shaq's contract

with all the free agency moves apparently filling the most obvious holes ,the most glaring in now at de -edge rusher or olb in near future,, ,the highest rated being  BOSA,  and then ALLEN and SWEAT,  ,is it possible that they are setting up a move for either ALLEN OR SWEAT ? lately some mock draft seeing them both at picks 5-7, IMO  getting Allen would be game changer and Sweat reminds me of a young Charles Haley , I would welcome a move to get either one, your opinion?/ or  can we wait and have one come to 9?

I watched Sweat this season ,he is just getting better every game it seems,

the way I see it adding ten more draft picks plus udfa's. would be a crowded camp.

some teams are so close to cap that more cuts still coming, ,I am curious who is still getting released either before or post draft, my understanding was teams needed 10 million set aside for draft , some teams are way under that the may have changed it but to sign them  the teams still has to find cap space, so more  cuts coming even before camps.

wish list for my draft goes like this.

1 sweat de or allen olb

2 dexter Lawrence dt  ,or  chris lindstrom og

3 riley ridley, deebo Samuel or ,miles boykin,, wrs.

4 benny snell rb , olive sagapolu, dt  or beau benzschawel og

5 dieter ot or ,granderson olb , bryce love rb,,

any combination will keep me smiling this offseason

I don’t see this happening.  If anything I can see the Bills package a few pick together to get another player in the 3rd or 4th rounds, but I don’t see them moving up in the first round.

  13. Actually looking back, Empire Sports Network was a pretty good thing.  How cool would it be to have a dedicated TV channel that was easy to access which covered Bills/Sabres and other loca content?  Sorry, but that MSG NY thing isn’t quite the same.

I actually searched for Sullivan's 'new' website the other day because I wanted to see what his thoughts were on FA but realised the last article posted on there was late last year. I guess that little venture fell on its ass pretty quick
