  1. I'm concerned about the way Matt Ellis and Marty Wilford have NOT been fired with the rest.

That's weird and I hope they'll both be gone when the new coach shows up.

I was encouraged by Adams' PC which seems to indicate Seth Appert will NOT be the coach; that's a huge win for Sabres fans right there.

Now we need to avoid the pitfall of hiring Lindy again.  He would be an improvement, but not ideal IMO.

The guy I'd love to see is Joel Quenneville, but he's not reinstated yet, and I think his penalty was to last through this off-season.

I don't know.  Maybe Berube.  Don't think they'll wait long enough to try and get Brind A'mour and I don't think he'd come here anyway.

It feels like they will try to get a guy fast.

I honestly don't think that the Bills do this without Allen give it a thumbs up.

I totally disagree and hope that's not the way it was.

    That's not professional.

Fans often think much more highly of players than their own management does.

Not saying there is some sort of dislike for Josh in the building; far from it.

I'm just saying if Josh's feelings are hurt (or not) should not be the basis of hugely important football decisions facing the team.

  3. The first hurdle has been cleared!

Now we must be sure NOT TO HIRE SETH APPERT.

That would be classic Pegula and a classic error...leading to 14 seasons without playoffs.

Gotta bring in the right type of coach; experienced, tough, proven at least to a degree.

He must demand respect from the players and he has to have some level of discipline to help the kids improve.

    Berube? Gallant? Boudreau?

Some will suggest Ruff.  I say "NO" to that, but he would be a big improvement over Granato.

Weird that ALL assistant coaches haven't been fired.  I assume all will be gone once new guy is here and organized.

  4. The most interesting story with the Sabres for the next few months, by far, will be if they fire Granato or not.

I am not expecting it but still holding out hope.

If they do it, I think it will be done with 24-48 hours of season ending.

I.E., TOMORROW most likely.  Could be a huge day in Sabres Land.

If no change is made, it will be hard to maintain enthusiasm for this group going forward.

The assistant coaching staff, in particular, must go.  They should have been wholesale fired at the end of last season.

  5. I'm a HUGE fan of the video games and know all the backstory, etc., to the show...but don't have Amazon.

I may have to cough up the $$$ to get the show.

Still finishing up the re-done "SHOGUN" on FX, which has been excellent.

Had an old friend I used to work with back in 2005-2008ish reach out to me about something.  We exchange a few messages back and forth and then start talking about how neither one of us are in touch with anybody from the old job anymore(at the time a lot of us hung out together outside of work; happy hours and going out to watch Sabres games were a HUGE deal back then, overall fun memories that feel like forever ago) my buddy says something about how it's so hard to believe it's been that long ago now since we all worked there.  I responded with it's been so long that the freaking Sabres were actually good back then and he responded with a LOL and how that really explains how much time has passed.  Just wanted to share on here because if you measure how long ago other things were in your life by using the Sabres being relevant it's a pretty shocking Wow moment 🤣

If you had a newborn baby on the day of our last playoff game played, that baby would become in a teenager in less than 2 weeks.

I keep reading about Julio Jones and the big trade-up to get him for the QB Matt Ryan led Falcons in 2011. The Falcons didn't even get to an SB until 2016, 5 years after that trade, and even then... they lost to the NE Patriots in that game. The Falcons that SB season also had Devonta Freeman at RB in a balanced offense.

After that trade for Julio Jones, Atlanta lost the WildCard game that season and lost in the conference championship to the 49ers after a 13-3 season.  The Falcons didn't even make the playoffs with WR Julio Jones in 2013-2014-2015 going 4-12, 6-10 and 8-8.

Lots of folks saying that the reason for the declining years was because of the resources spent on that stud WR. And that HC Mike Smith was canned along the way in 2015, the GM a bit later in 2020.

Let's look at the team that beat the Falcons in that Super Bowl, the NE Patriots.  Yes, they had Tom Brady at QB all those SB years. But who else did they have? SB in 2001 with WR Troy Brown. The funny thing with that 2001 season was the only 1000-yard season Troy Brown had in his 15 seasons with NE. They also had WR Randy Moss in 2007-2008-2009 and he had 3 1000-yard seasons in NE and yet they made one SB in 2007 only to lose it and didn't make it in the next two seasons with Moss.

So, I'm thinking that these stud superstar WRs don't always make a team an SB contender.  Calvin Johnson, 2007 2015. Megatron, he ever make a SB? Larry Fitzgerald for Arizona 2004-2020. He made it to one SB and lost it. Steve Largent, Seattle 1976-1989 with 8, 1000-yard seasons.

I look at the NE Patriots who run the very same offensive scheme as the current Buffalo Bills (Erhardt-Perkins). So what did they do so well that got them to so many SBs and wins? They usually played great defense with Ole Bill as the HC. They moved the chains with Troy Brown, Wess Welker, and Julian Edelman, and when they went to the red zone they had a big TE in Rob Gronkowski. Buffalo has their "chain movers" in Shakir, Knox, and Dalton Kincade.

An isolated piece of anecdotal information is hardly instructive in any calculated decision.

You gotta go with the percentages/odds/what happens most of the time.

The Bills just gave up a LOT to get Stefon Diggs and it was a big deal move at the time, but it worked out as well as you can imagine.

I am NOT a fan of moving up in general, I think it's the wrong way to do things...but without elite talent at WR, we are going nowhere.

I wonder how much it takes for that dude to get drunk.

I had a friend in undergrad who was a huge guy; 6'5" and like 295 at the time.  He was into weight lifting and was actively trying to get to 300 lbs. b/c he thought it would be cool to be 300 lbs.

He would pound a CASE OF BEER at home to get "warmed up" prior to LEAVING THE HOUSE to start out night of bar hopping.

I know a case of beer to warm up seems like BS; but that is what he would do.  He could guzzle a beer in a few seconds and I don't think it really impacted him at all.

Lots of tolerance for alcohol back in those days too, from plenty of practice.

Some of these guys in the NFL (who look closer to 400 lbs to my eye) can probably do an alcohol IV and remain sober.

If moving him now would make the team BETTER OVERALL, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

    Who wouldn't?

I would say the same of almost anyone on the team save Josh.

I think the main thing Pegula is doing wrong is that he absolutely refuses to hire anyone with actual NHL experience in their job and then allow them to simply do their job. He has not hired a single GM with any experience, and only 1 coach with any experience (Bylsma), who he quickly fired because the players wanted him to.

I feel like he keeps trying to be the “smartest guy in the room”, hiring these inexperienced coaches and GMs. I think he wants to find a young coach that can be around for many years, which sounds good in theory but it rarely happens in the NHL. I mean, Granato is the 6th longest tenured coach in the NHL right now. NHL coaches are hired to be fired.

He also seems to value communication with ownership over actually being good at your job.

I guess that’s why talks fell apart with Jim Rutherford.

Imagine if they had hired him to be president of hockey ops years ago when they had discussions with him. Look how quickly he’s turned around Vancouver.

I think with the Bills he got lucky. If it were up to Pegula alone, Whaley would probably still be GM. He wanted to keep Marrone. He hired Rex freaking Ryan (though I give him credit for firing him so quickly).

They lucked into McDermott and Beane. It was reported that to hire McDermott/Beane, Pegula had to agree to give them total control of football operations. And it was also reported a couple years ago that the decision to give them total control over football operations is something Pegula regrets. Even with all the success. Yikes!

I think we are damn lucky he found McDermott, who brought in Beane. I just hope like heck that both are never fired at the same time, otherwise I’d be very scared who he’d hire to replace them.

When we let Mike Peca get away from the organization a while ago, I knew things were even worse over there than I thought.

We are not operating as a "full service," "real," "professional" hockey team.  We just aren't.  The Sabres the pet project/hobby of a laissez-faire owner who has made it very clear over time that he is BEYOND CLUELESS when it comes to sports, and in particular, sports organization/management.

Notice he has actually shown up at the last couple Sabres games, after he took a lot of heat for NEVER appearing at a game ALL YEAR.

He is NOT looking to win a Cup.  He is looking to avoid losing money with a business that loses a lot of money every year.

He also wants to be the guy in charge and have direct impact over hockey decisions.

As long as he is on the top of the pyramid, we will be a joke show.

It's so bad now, good luck attracting quality people to the organization.

Will be very hard to do.

They draft children, and hope the kids develop into good NHL players,,, but it's not always the case.  And these kids have no real idea what it takes to make the playoffs game in and game out.  I personally think the Sabres need to spend on a head coach who's been there and done it (like the Rangers hired Laviolette this season)....and infuse the roster with some experienced solid players who have playoff experience.

Edited 1 hour ago by zow2

We have had plenty of players who were capable of getting the job done during the drought.

We had ROR, left the Sabres, went to St. Louis, won a Cup AND THE FRIGGING CONN SMYTHE!

Eichel moves to LV; wins a Cup as the 1C on their team.

Reinhart goes to FL, gets to Cup finals on a great team, and nets 50 goals this season.

Still on the team are ELITE talents like Dahlin (as good of a young D-man as there is in the game), Power (who is nowhere CLOSE to his ceiling and still is coming off a monster season), and Tage Thompson (who I think we will find out in a few days played with some type of injury for much of the year).

We have and have had the talent.  I haven't even mentioned guys like Tuch who is a solid, fast, talented, BIG, hockey player.

Goaltending was finally GOOD this past season, and we look good for next year sharing the net between 6K and Levi.

What is the one common denominator over the 13 years?  PEGULA.  OF COURSE IT IS.

Whenever a franchise goes this bad for this long, it's ALWAYS the ownership.

You would think Buffalo sports fans would be aware of this, seeing as we went through EXACTLY the same thing with the Bills for @ 20 years with Ralph.  There was a LONG stretch of time where the Bills were garbage, were going to remain garbage, and nothing anyone did would change the situation substantially until RALPH DIED.

I truly feel we are in a similar situation now; we need Pegula to sell the Sabres and focus on the Bills.

It is, by far, the #1 way to move this franchise forward, quickly.

  13. The overall theme is that these guys do NOT know how to properly evaluate talent, even though they ALL think they do.

The overwhelming superstar of the WR class might go early second round.  Who knows.

Look at all the highly paid NFL executives/scouts who completely BOTCHED the QB position in the 2018 draft as just one recent example we are all probably familiar with.

  14. I'm holding off comment until the day after the season ends.

If Granato isn't fired with 24 hours of the season ending, we'll officially know where we stand with Pegula at this stage of his ownership.

He still might surprise me and fire Granato, but I don't think he will.

    That isn't a typo.

Josh Allen is elite now.  Diggs served his purpose, much like Tyreek Hill served his in Kansas City.  They gave shooting star QB's reliable, talented targets they could confidently throw to, helping to establish confidence and develop the QB's mental game.

Hill complained after being traded (at least he watied to make this public when he was already gone) that he wasn't being focused on enough, or getting enough targets...etc.

The Chiefs traded him away, used the assets and cap space to improve other parts of the team, AND then went out and performed even better on offense.  I strongly believe that a reason why this happend is becasue Mahomes was entirely free to run each and every play with the idea that making the most optimal throw is what mattered.  Not to massage an ego or placate a guy wanting a larger role etc.  You can make a strong case KC's WR room isn't any great shakes.  I'd agree with that.  They don't need to be.  Zach Wilson isn't our QB....and he's not the Bills QB either.  Josh Freaking Allen is.  Allen doesn't need elite, high cots WR's to shine now.

I know the Bills are committed to this season as an all in, all chips to the middle of the table type season....that's fine.  I wouldn't even say that it's a bad idea....but I think it would be better if you moved Diggs for all you could possibly get, go sign a couple vets who need to prove it, who have maybe some low self esteem because they've fallen out of favor due to injury etc....get a couple mid level guys who you know are good pros.  Let ALLEN run the team.. let HIM dictate the best place for the ball to go.  It's his job to run as efficient, well managed offense as he possibly can....not make sure pouting WR's see the ball X number of times a game.

Use the resources to add to your team in areas that Allen doesn't directly impact, like the defense etc.  If the guys work out...they move on, sign big deal somewhere else...and you reload with a couple more dudes who need to prove it again.  There is never a shortage of these guys and they overplay their contracts consistantly.  Plus, you'll be supplimenting these WR's with WR's you draft who are cheap and cost controlled.

ALLEN is it. He's why you are 3rd best odds to win Super Bowl this upcoming season.. LEAN INTO IT.

    ACTUALLY, IT IS A TYPO.

    "RECEIVERS" Einstein.

Will always love the BILLS , esp the 90’s teams and their greatness, but imho the final 4 is more pure athletic joy to watch over the much hyped , but often predictable, often less competitive Sb!

For one thing tonight’s national anthem was performed beautifully , flawlessly , with no improvised runs or interpretation.  Done by a Native American who moved the crowd to chant USA, USA with no ongoing war , just moved by her performance which was fabulous and has replaced Whitney’s rendition imo ,{albeit it was still supporting the USA at a time of war}. Just my opinion , but thats how you show pride in your country with no political agenda. If that didn’t move you , maybe you are either very jaded or over medicated.

The quality of competition in march madness has been really good, and the meaning to each player , some of whom will never become pros , leads to the exhibition of passion pro sports fails to reach at this point. Now foes are just buddies, who share commercials, may even be teammates the next season, plus they are all highly paid and they know there is always  next year because there is no eligibility limit other than your teams needs / cap limits. However, there are 31 other chances to catch on.   The NFL  is a mans sport , and nothing can match the youthful  exuberance that we all Lose with time and experience. I loved the nfl/bills so much in my 20’s that iwent  to two superbowls.  Great experiences i was so happy to attend; yet now it is such a corporate , highly over priced event that there is no longer any amount of money you could pay me to be treated as nothing more than a commodity by a multibillion dollar business who still begs for taxpayors monies while holding communities hostage threatening to move  their franchises despite years of faithful support.

That leads to the actual players we are supposed to be fans of, enjoy their unique talents. Some live up to that lofty expectation and i salute those who somehow retain their humility. But then we are exposed to many criminals, many with children by several “baby-mommas” as if some badge of honor, and of course , the narcissists who speak about teamwork but whose actions prove they are only about their personal gains and are really not about anything but their “ bag”. It’s just not as prevalent in college and they still play for each other. enjoying possibly their only chance to win a championship. It’s a business still, but not as in your face as ‘THE SHIELD”  is.

Also , basketball is played much the same as it was in the 70’s , other than held balls and the 3 point line. Try and keep up with pro football , and the myriad of changes makes it hard to grasp each year   It’s  still way too often decided by too many part time refs and waiting literally on minutes for replay to still come back with not enough evidence or even frankly still wrong. Basketball doesn’t suffer from all the delays between plays , reviews, innumerable commercials .  Rare doe it have  Overhyped ,overextended halftimes.  It’s still a faster paced game.

And never tell me about so called football experts, its plethora of podcasters that talk like they know more than regular fans, or all the draftniks who spend hours evaluation tons of mock drafts..  they are rarely even close and do all that wasted “film time” , as only 4-5 0f drafted players from each time will even see plating time. Yeah tell me experts have validity when almost 0 0f them predicted Diggs being traded. Actually criticizing any other opinion  sarcastically “because there was no way with that cap hit”!  It’s just proof , experts are no more than guessing amateurs and spending money on their “opinions” is just akin to scams. If you can’t predict a major trade like Diggs , how far off must your other advice be ?

But my main point still comes down to which event do you enjoy more?  The SB , with its multimillion dollar athletes who will do the same all over again next year , with little on the line for them personally as most have already made their fortunes , or the excitement of march madness who didn’t have 2 anthems sung to please its corporate crowd., and is still the same sport we basically all have played. I love the BILLS , but i really don’t care about the offseason that much. Because time after time , the season isn’t won until it actually counts.   The SB is good, most time anti climatic, but march madness and the final 4 is still ascending.  Give me a BILLS win and i might feel different,,,,but 55 years is a lot to ask!  Still, a great anthem tonight!  Great game tonight!

Didn't know tonight was the final 4; don't watch; it and the SB are not my favorite sporting event.

    Stanley Cup Playoffs!!!

One of my favorites is David Gilmore Live in Gdansk; might be the best 2nd solo to Comfortably Numb David ever did.

The Sabres league leading negative goal differential in the first period is 100% on Don Granato.

    That's coaching!

Will it matter?  If I had to bet, I'd say Granato will be back next year.

The fundamental makeup of this team is flawed.  Too many of the same type of player.  We need more grit, we need more competitiveness, and we need more nasty players who are hard to play against.

The day after the season ends, it should be automatic that Granato is fired...
