  1. I get all the Star criticism.  I don't agree with Jordan Phillips hype though.  He actually looks out of place a lot to me.

Oliver I watched the Washington game again and just watched the d-line only.  I thought he played really well in this game.  Maybe because he only played a few snaps but I don't think he is a problem.  I am sure there is more to it than what I am watching but my second time watching the game I felt like he was a bright spot on the D-line.

I do agree the other D-tackles are pretty much meh.  Phillips sack in Washington game is not from his pass rush.  It is from the QB rolling out.  Almost like Phillips lucked into the sack.  His sacks vs Tennessee however were legit earned.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion that Daboll is a good play caller, but "take him over Gase or Kitchens"?  That's kind of a low bar, don't you think?

FWIW I think this quote about Daboll from a Cover1 article by Fernando Schmude pretty well has it right:
Overall, he called a good game, but surely, just like his QB and the rest of the offense, he’s still a work in progress. He needs to find a balance between being aggressive and conservative in his calls, and take advantage of the multifaceted potential of this offense, using it according to their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses.

Fair enough.  It is an extremely low bar.  I used Tase because the media seems to have a love affair with him as being a quarterback whisperer.  He was fortunate enough to have been with Manning.  Look at his record with all other QB's.  Kitchens because he got the job as HC last year after great strides with Mayfield.  Mayfield looks rough this season s well as Cleveland.  I think Daboll has done a great job with what many believed to be a very unpolished talent at the QB position.  In all of his other stops he has had crap to work with at the QB position.  Nothing in the games he is calling leads me to believe he is the failure of this offense.  I am not saying Daboll can't improve but to put the blame of the offense solely on play calling is absurd when we are constantly trying to convert 2nd and longs and third and longs from presnap penalties.  Additionally as much of a fan boy I am of Josh Allen I can admit he needs to make the strides on offense himself.  The offensive line needs to step up as well.  The fact that we couldn't get Frank Gore in the end zone on 3 tries up the middle I don't put on play calling.  That is on the offensive line.  We brought in big boys and they need to get the job done.

Don't interpret my post as not wanting to see more of the offense.  I think we are close to putting it together and it would be nice to see some solid passing.  I just didn't expect that the last two weeks with the weather/wind.  Hopefully in Cleveland we keep the pre snap penalties down and the offense can deliver more.  That being said I will take a win no matter how ugly over the Browns.

  3. I don't post often but I feel like everyone's clamoring for Daboll's play calling is so bipolar.  On the second series from first and goal we went backwards because he was too cute.  So we settled for a field goal.  Then on the third series of first and goal we run it right up the middle and get stuffed 3 times in a row.  Everyone whines that it was horrible play calling.  I am pretty sure McDermott has a say in a bit of that.  Also I have to imagine that the coaches want our team to impose our will on other teams.  Like how Philly did it to us.  McDermott always talks about establishing the line of scrimmage.  Also Frank Gore ran right up the middle against the Pat's defense just fine.  I put way less into play calling and more into execution.  When we went for it on 4th and 1 and got stuffed did anyone watch Mitch Morse get blown back into Gore?  That is hardly Gore's fault or the play call.  That is getting owned by the other player not he other line of scrimmage.

Also I put the failure in Philly on execution.  So many false starts, holding calls, missed reads, etc.

I think Daboll is a good play caller.  I would take him over Gase or Kitchens any day of the week.  That being said I think the offense needs to get out of their own way with the mistakes.  This game against the Redskins was much better from a penalty stand point.  I am glad they are taking some deep shots.  Allen has been off target on a lot early.  I think the one vs Philly and the one vs Washington to Foster were both very catchable.  He needs to track the ball better.  when you only are getting one shot a game you need to make a play on the ball.

On defense my biggest concerns is Wallace.  Especially this week vs the Browns.  They have talent at the WR position.  No doubt they pick on Wallace like Philly did.  Also giving up another 100 yards rushing (in the first half) doesn't exactly exude confidence against the next few upcoming opponents with good running games.

Last thought is most people before this season thought 9-7 or 10-6 season.  I don't know that I think this team has taken enough of a jump to beat that.  However the AFC teams have taken a dump so now it is expected that we beat that record.  Which I think is doable.  Maybe 11-5 or even 12-4 if they play big in a game or two.  That being said just because the AFC teams are crumbling doesn't mean my expectations of our talent or development of our talent has changed.  We still are a team developing.  I think Allen has made good progress this season.  I think he will continue to as well.  The 300 yard thing would be nice but only if the game dictated it.  We have been in control most games so why would we just go out and start throwing around?  Run the clock out.  If I recall all the second guesser fans out there were complaining a few weeks back when Daboll called three pass plays in a row and we took no time off the clock.  I believe it was the Miami game.  This is what I refer to as bipolar.  Hindsight is always 20/20.  In that game I am sure he thought our team should be able to stick it to them and because of execution we didn't.  People complained that we should have been running it.  So yea I do think these coaches do play aggressive enough.  We have gone for it a lot on 4th down this season.  More so than I can ever remember.

Bottom line I have no complaints.  We are doing as well as I had hoped for.  I hope we can keep it going.  Beat Browns, Denver, Miami, and Jets.  Maybe sneak out another win against Pittsburgh or Dallas.  Now if the Patriots start to get dismantled by other teams going forward then maybe I will get greedy for the division (lol).  But I never expected the division this season.  However after watching the improvement this season I do expect us to push for the division seriously next season.

That first holding call on Dawkins is inexcusable. It’s a free play, you don’t hold to protect your QB there as the refs are supposed to blow it dead if a player is coming in unabated to the QB. That penalty made me mad.

The following one on Morse was kinda on Allen and kinda a bad call. Allen held the ball for 5-6 seconds on that play, you can’t expect the OL to hold off the D that long...except that was a totally ticky-tack call that had no impact on the play. Those are the types of calls the refs have been instructed not to call.

But yeah, it might have been a different game had they picked up the first there. It’s tough to know what would have happened. The Bills crosses mid-field time and time again this game yet had little success putting points in the board.

The hold on Dawkins never should have happened. It wasn’t a free play. One of the offensive linemen jumped after the Offside to create a dead ball penalty. It should have been whistled dead. This to me was another referee blunder in this game.

maybe the other calls I wouldn’t call blunders.  They were some weird plays that somehow always seem to favor the Pats. But that call our O lineman jumped to get the play called dead. They never blew the whistle. The outcome...favored the Pats. Ironically you would be stoked that they didn’t whistle it dead cause it’s a free shot at a deep ball. But again the bills get called on holding. So moot point.

They turned the ball over 4 times, had a punt blocked for a TD and lost by 6. The refs had little to do with the Bills losing the game.

I’m not saying they earned or deserved to win. However the last time we beat the Patriots at home Brady threw 4 INT’s and still almost won that game as well. They happen and it’s part of the game. We had a chance to win the game still. Several chances really. We got some calls in our favor and some not. I get it. But the game could have gone our way. Even with the turnovers. Penalties make a difference. That play alone could have been the game clincher. It just seems typical that it wouldn’t go in our favor. Just like the hands to the face calls that seem to be ignored. Pats get a lot of breaks. Maybe it’s just luck if the Irish.

TJ Yeldon looked much better today! That said, he really needed to hold onto that Throw on the trick play. Tough catch but that would have won the game.

I’m still a little miffed there was no PI on that call. The defender was in Yeldon’s lap not looking at the ball.  But hey it’s the Pats so can’t say I’m shocked.

  7. I think the play that hurt us the most was late in the 3rd quarter. It was an Offside penalty on NE that was negated by a holding on Dawkins. One of our offensive linemen false started when the defender jumped Offside. The play should have been whistled dead as an Offside 5 yard penalty. But they let the play go live. Then it bit us in the butt.

that among many other calls that constantly can go 50/50 and just always seem to fall in favor of the Patriots.

I know everyone is pissed on JA’s 3 picks but to me it’s a wash. It’s almost like punting or changing field position. Especially when Bojo shanks and makes 22 yard punts. I realize this cost us the game ultimately but when you live by the pass you die by the pass. Most QB’s throwing for yards throw some INT’s. However to contradict myself Brady only won this game because he didn’t take any chances. So there’s a time and place to everything. In a game against the Pats JA needs to learn he can’t do everything and we don’t need him to do everything.

In a game this close though Brady didn’t win it for the Pats. He just didn’t lose it. So I realize JA probably lost the game. I think if he’s in the game he pulls out the win on that drive. I really do. But getting rid of the ball and throwing it away probably keeps this game closer. 13-16 or even 16-16 late in the 4th which makes for a different ending.

For anyone trying to defend the hit on JA because he’s a runner you are mistaken. A defender can not target another player’s helmet with his own helmet or forearm. That’s a RB, WR, and especially a QB. The rule doesn’t say especially a QB. That’s my own add. But the rule is on any runner. It doesn’t limit it to a defenseless runner. In this case however JA was wrapped up and most definitely a defenseless runner.

it was nice NE had more penalties than the Bills. I feel like there were at least 3-5 more that should have gone in our favor.

The blocked punt I assume is the responsibility of the personal protector or the punter. They should have recognized the gunners not covered. Either bring them in for extra protection or audible for a pass. That’s freaking frustrating.

I’m not about moral victories anymore than the next fan. Would have been awesome to get the win here. As a realist I never had this marked as a W when looking over the schedule so the calm version of me sees how great our defense looks and thinks we can roll up some serious wins this season. Also I like our chances in Foxboro later this year. I believe JA will make smarter decisions as the season progresses.

I’m willing to live with the growing pains. I’m glad they aren’t hiding his inexperience like all the other QB’s we’ve had.  It’s refreshing to see the coaches have confidence in him and want him to develop.

Please learn from this game Josh. Please!  I don’t have the patience to have us draft another QB in 2-3 years.

    Offense (25):

    QB (2): Allen / Barkley

    RB (4) (5): McCoy / Gore / Singletary / Yeldon / DiMarco

     - Read a few times that Dabol's offense will use DiMarco in tricky ways

    OL (9) (8): Dawkins / Spain / Morse / Ford / Nsekhe / Feliciano / Bates / Long / Teller / McDermott

    IR: Spain, Waddle

    - I went Teller over Long due to both Bates and Feliciano can backup OC  and Teller is young OG with some potential

    TE (4) (3): Knox / Smith / Sweeney / Croom

    PUP: Kroft

    WR (6) (7): Brown / Beasley / Foster / Williams / McKenzie / Roberts / Jones

    P (1): ? Bojo

    LS (1): Ferguson

This looks about as accurate as I can imagine.  They are keeping Long though.  Probably over a 7th LB.  Everything else looks perfect in my opinion.  People thinking we go into the season without a fullback apparently haven't been watching Bills football all last season.  Also I think they are too smart to not sign a different punter.  Remember last season they cut their training camp punter and grabbed Bojo.  Wouldn't be surprised to see something similar this season.  Bojo blew it this week in my opinion.  If Carter shows anything Thursday then it's his after Bojo's chance last Friday.

Generally agree with his projections, but I think they'll keep 9 OL and only 10 DBs.

As for positional battles, here's what I see:

    - It's Bolden vs. McKenzie for the WR6 spot.  The team clearly wants to keep a gadget-type with short-area quickness, and these two check that box.  I don't really see Duke Williams entering the battle unless he looks incredible during TC.

    - Yeldon vs. Perry vs. Murphy for the RB4 spot. I know special teams is important, but I'd rather keep the guy that shows the ability to run the ball when asked.  RBs get banged up in this league; it's a fact of life.

    - Lewis vs. K. Johnson vs. Pitts for the CB5 spot.  I'm assuming that the top 4 CBs are set as White/Wallace/T. Johnson/Gaines (I'm counting Neal as one of 5 safeties in this case).  For me, you've got plenty of guys that can play the slot role in T. Johnson, Gaines, Neal, and even Hyde if necessary.  I'm not worrying so much about who can handle the slot; I'm more interested in who's the best cover guy.  Keeping a 6th corner at the expense of a 4th tackle would be a mistake IMO.

    K. Johnson very well could end up being the starting CB opposite TreDavious.  The reporters can't stop talking about him making picks.  He is a former 1st rounder.  the only reason he isn't on a big contract is he can't stay healthy.  Wallace is a nice story but K. Johnson is a baller if healthy.

  11. I can’t recall what game specifically it was last season but Josh Allen made a first down throw on 3rd and about 6. The play got called back for holding. Next play was 3rd and 16 and Josh’s allen came back and hit a deep outside comeback for a first down again. The play got called back again for holding. For me that was the defining moment when I knew Josh Allen can play this game.  The first was him converting with his arm instead of running. The second was him converting with his arm on what would normally be a throw short and punt it for field position. The kid can play. I don’t post here often but I read every day on these threads. Ronin’s argument that the new OL additions with husband pFF ratings is in accurate to say the least. If you go to 2017 PFF ratings Spencer Long grades out very well at guard. Now healthy one can assume upgrade at LG, C and with Ford/Neschke (I cant spell it) at RT this line is upgraded for sure. Significantly?  Not necessarily. Upgraded?  Definitely. I’m of the opinion that if JA gets a half second more in the pocket or a full second then we will see him hit 58-60% completion. If we get him more time than that he will be pushing 65%. During OTA’s they were throwing swing passes close to half the snaps on offense. That alone will help increase his completion percentage. A halfway decent run offense (which the slightly-moderately upgraded O line will help provide) will help allen as well in his development.

How is someone watched Allen last season and is unable to recognize his improvement over the last 5-6 games of the season is beyond me. They need to rewatch the games. Don’t look at the stats. The ball is placed just fine. A few times it’s placed incredibly well.

Oh yeah WR is upgraded too. Not dominant but definitely adequate. This should be a fun season. I think 10-6 is realistic. 11-5 very possible.

  12. Ford is praised for his run blocking. His best skill.

Spain is a mailer in the run game.

Feliciano is better run blocker than passer. Not sure he’s an amazing talent. But better at the run than pass.

Long is a good run blocker

Neske I’m not sure. But based on his size I wouldn’t be shocked if he was a stud there too.

Really Morse is the weak link at run blocking. I’m not concerned about the rest of the offensive line talent. I honestly think we lead the league in rushing, end up with a top 3 defense (not just in yards but in points), and end up somewhere in the middle with the passing game. Lots of people here feel confident that we can push 10-6. Personally with our O-line and control of the run game/clock I think we squeak out 11-5 this season. A big jump. The question is going to be to is that enough to take the Patriots this season. Do they slip?  Or can we split with them and luck out on a tie breaker?  I wouldn’t bet on them slipping but if we pull off an upset and another team then it will get interesting.

  13. Have to think that the offensive line will be improved.  That should give Josh more time from the pocket where he threw pretty darn well.  Also I think the darn swing routes to the RB will be one of the main focuses in developing Josh this season.  They were there for the taking and he would wait way too long.  That is where Brady makes his living.  Figure he completes a few of those easy dumps during the game.  I would not be shocked to watch his completion percentage fall between 60-62% this year which I think is more than enough.  I am guessing he averages 200-250 yards a game passing.  The long balls are not high completion percentages but I think with better offensive line play they do become more achievable regularly.

Season 3,500 yards           24 TD's   12 INT's          That is serious improvement.  Ground game will be markedly improved this season.  McCoy gets really close to the 12,000 yard mark this year.  I think we lead the league in rushing this season.  To me that would be the biggest improvement.  That opens up the passing game for Josh Allen.  Play Action they were force feeding last season.  This year it will work.

  14. I believe Allen elevates the talent at WR. Most good quarterbacks do that. Last year Josh allen was arguably the best player on the field for us the last few weeks. I believe he continues to progress. It doesn’t even need to be a major jump. Just steady improvement.

I think JA will help make these WR look better. Also I think these WR’s can get it done. Too many people seem to think that we must have this all star #1 WR. I just don’t think there are that many even in our league. There can’t be more than 10-15. Surely not every team has a big time receiver. We aren’t the only team lacking a true number one.

That being said I wouldn’t be bummed at all if we were able to find someone via trade.

My my vote for #6 is Duke Williams.

Also I don’t think Roberts is a sure bet. I know he is good and led the league in returns. But other talent could rise for a returner. However Roberts does have production as a WR in the past. So I do think it’s probably 80/20 chance he makes it.

There red will be a couple of FA’s we signed that I wouldn’t be shocked if they were cut/traded. We signed so many. It’s a beautiful thing having decent competition this season.

Long was signed at a time when the team couldn't guarantee that they'd get a starting C in free agency.  He got very little guaranteed money, so I wouldn't be assured that he's going to start.

I also wouldn't say that he excelled at guard. He was good, but not the player that Spain was in 2016 or 2017.  Don't get me wrong, I'll be fine if Long beats out all of Spain, Teller, Feliciano, and Boettger for the RG job.  Hopefully it means that he earned it and wasn't simply the lesser of all evils.

Long on Redskins was a pretty darn good football player. I’d argue he was better there than Spain at the Titans during that 2 year period.

You our are correct on when he was signed and guaranteed. But look at spain’s guarantees. It was a very small contract. Shockingly small

  16. Neske (sp)

    Dawkins

    Morse

    Long

    Ford

The only way Spain starts is if Dawkins wins the LT job. Spain got a small contract. Long got paid some good money. Contract is structured for back up/starter depending on where he plays.

People worrying about who plays swing positions are putting too much emphasis on that. We have so many guys who play multiple positions we could easily start the best 5 and dress another 2 OL guys on game day. If someone goes down then you can move someone to another spot to get through the game if needed. Ex: Neske goes down they kick Dawkins out to LT and Spain comes in to play LG. Or Morse gets hurt they slide Long to Center and Spain in at RG. Or whoever is the second dressed backup OL for that game.

People are are sleeping on Long for some reason. Don’t let last year dictate your opinion of him. His snapping hand was jacked up. Look at him at Guard where he excelled. Even for the Jets with a messed up hand.

  17. They keep 4 and a fullback.

Last year they started 4 RB’s during the season. We had to call one up from the practice squad for those who forget (Kieth Ford).

NE runs with 4 backs every season. We run a similar offense. I’d imagine they want McCoy to get 15-20 touches. Gore will get 6-10 (pass blocking downs). New kid will factor in as well as Yeldon. They just might not all get their touches the first few weeks. But the RB’s are going to get banged up. It’s football. Beane and McDermott said they want to run and play action. We couldn’t do that last year. We will this year and watch Josh Allen progress this season because of it. Good things my friends. Good things.

  18. 8 minutes ago, Troll Toll said:

Allen finished with 2000 yards passing last year. Receiver was a major issue (as was OL), but as the QB, Allen takes all the flak for their flaws. As far as I’m concerned this coaching staff and front office has set him up to fail over and over again.

You give all the first team reps to Peterman, then throw Allen into the fire in the 2nd half of Week 1. They failed to properly address OL, WR, and TE knowing they had a rookie QB going into last year. This is now 2 offseasons where they have failed to provide Allen with an adequate supporting cast. He looked like his confidence was nearly broken at the time of his injury last year. I hate that this team is going to let last year’s **** show around him happen again. Any success he has had so far has been in spite of the players, coaches and FO around him.

If Allen fails, this team fails. Every time they apply their resources to defense or the running game when we are bottom of the NFL in passing just makes it more likely Allen will struggle. We were at the bottom of the NFL last year in offense and Allen was running for his life. This offense needs a lot of help and a bunch of journeymen signings don’t inspire a lot of confidence that this unit will be much better than a year ago. Weaknesses at OG, TE, RB, WR1 and WR2 remain going into this season. Bills are set at C, T, and WR3.

I don’t think RB is a weakness at all.

Guard you have Long and Spain (no long wasn’t brought in to play back up center and yes he is a damn fine guard when healthy). TE I would say it’s as good as last season (possibly better cause Charles Clay was injured).

WR is better than what we finished with last season. Could be better still yes. But no reason to think Josh can’t improve with the additions.

Lastly you started the argument with Josh a Allen threw for 2,000 yards. He also missed multiple games and was probably not ready to go from the begging long. However the kid has the make up to succeed. If we run for over 2,500 yards and he passes for 3,500 yards then he is developing just nicely. Also we are playoff bound.

    low round draft pick

I just don’t see the argument for this unless it was Hollywood Brown in the 1st which we obviously didn’t do because we went with Ed Oliver.

Maybe we we can pull of Hakeem Butler or Emmanuel Hall. Otherwise we still could trade I suppose. But that probably won’t happen unless there’s a legit all star that Beane wants/can get.

Also so I can’t see how the new offensive line talent doesn’t give you a massive football bonner. Like my prostate hurts it’s so massive. Freaking get ready for some W’s boys!

Maybe you should get your head out of the sand,  look at the great teams in this league. Passing game and making big plays down the field is a huge part of their success.

Josh Allen averaged the longest pass per attempt last season and we added John Brown. I’m pretty sure that won’t drop off. Go ahead and flame away and be negative about that move. Brown is a decent player. Not a number 1 but a good player. We have the boys to get downfield. Also if you heard Beane in his presser they want to run and Play action. So this draft is exactly geared in that direction.

If if you are upset that we took Cody Ford in round 2 then I just don’t even know where to start with you. If Josh Allen has 5 seconds to throw then he will be doing terrific this season. Also McCoy is possibly getting to 12,000 this year with this line.

  21. I want nothing to do with Kelvin Harmon. I just don’t see the love. The guy timed slow and plays slow too. Also doesn’t look or play as big as he measured. I’d take A Johnson over Harmon. Riley Ridley doesn’t look anything as talented as his brother on film. Just a good last name. Hall from Mizz I think it is I think would be worth a flyer. Kind of a Robert Foster build. And really fast.

Im wondering if Butler bombed interviews?  Way too talented to slide to round 4. Something is up.

It is the train wreck everyone sees coming. So many of the top receivers were there for the taking with a trade up into the 2nd. Is Cole Beasly our top receiver? We have nobody that can consistently win on the outside. We don’t have guys that align with Allen’s skillset. The Titans now have Corey Davis AND AJ Brown. Allen would kill it with those guys. Buffalo definitely could have made some trade to get Brown. Instead, I don’t know if their 3rd round picks make the team in 2 years.

I understand that you can’t fix a broken offense like ours was in one offseason, but I feel like they are setting up Allen to struggle... again! Allen needs someone that can track and catch his deep throws, otherwise teams will cheat towards the LoS again. It’s just frustrating knowing Allen has no shot of realizing his full potential this year.

I feel like everyone here is contradicting themselves on this board. If any of these WR’s were clear cut #1 wideouts then they would have gone early in the first. They just aren’t. Sure there’s some talented ones. Maybe red zone type threats and stuff. But who is to say they see any of these draftable WR’s as anything better that on our roster. At this point (or even in round 3) if Beane is drafting someone then that player definitely needs to be a special teams contributor most likely. Just my opinion. But think about it logically. John Brown and Beasley aren’t playing special teams. So other WR’s who are on game day roster need to be playing special teams too.

I guess I'm just not as bent out of shape because really if they weren’t there in the top 2 rounds I didn’t feel like they would push someone on our roster. Except for McLaurin in the 3rd. And he got drafted right before us. I honestly think he would have been the pick over Singletary. But I’m not going to lose my $#!+ over it. We still have our top WR’s from last season + Beasley and Brown. Maybe even Duke Williams contributes. We proved last year with a crap O-line and Foster and Zay that JA can throw for 200 yards. Now with this new focus on the O-lime and a couple more guys maybe Josh a Allen is more consistent. Running less. I just don’t see it as the sky is falling. I kind of felt like WR was a maybe if the right guy fell to us. Not a we absolutely must draft a WR.

Now as as far as day 3 prospects I still feel like there’s talent there that I would argue will stick around the NFL as long or longer than a few who went before. Still some fast dudes. Also shockingly Hakeem Butler is there who I feel like is and has been the best award on the board. I guess that’s why I’m not a talent evaluator. Or maybe he just bombed in interviews.

Keep that hat in mind but a reason some of these people fall so far is teams completely remove them from their boards. So when they are falling and we on the board are screaming “how come we aren’t trading up into the 3rd round to take so and so” just remember. Usually at that point no one is. Metcalf must have been completely off people’s boards. Neck injuries are serious. Seattle is willing to gamble. We will see if it pays off. I’m 50/50 on him. I think I’m more obsessed about his numbers than anything.

There is some WR’s still there with some impressive highlight film. Who knows if that matches up with their skill. I’m guessing if we grab one at this point he will be fast and a teams contributor. Not shocking at all.

Totally agree,  now watch us pick McLaurin from OSU because he plays teams....<sarcasm button off>

Lol. I honestly  called this one a while back.

Side note it’s it makes sense cause the WR’s we have on our roster Beasley, John Brown and Zay aren’t playing special teams. So this wouldn’t shock me. Also McLaurin’s 4.35 40 time didn’t hurt his draft stock. But I think he can be had in the 4th. Maybe even the 5th if lucky. So I see DE and TE as going in the next two picks.
