He also missed a critical FG in the 1988 AFC Championship Game against Cincinnati.  Not to pile on or anything.

That was small beans compared to Charlie Romes dropping an interception on the Bengals drive that resulted in the game winning score. UGH...

I personally wouldn't trade up, but I know Beane almost certainly will. If he must, I think trading up from the 4th to get back into the 3rd probably makes the most sense. Won't hurt too much in terms of what we give up but that could allow us to get 3 very good prospects.

I tend to agree with you.  There are two things we can't predict.  First, we don't know if there is someone that Beane really really wants that gets within his range to make a trade in any round at any reasonable price.  Secondly, we don't know if there is a position group that Beane feels a need to have talent added to it.  This could happen if there is a run in the draft with a limited number of decent prospects, like DE.

  3. I have negotiated many labor contracts for a large corporation.  Language changes that someone decides to add after a ratification vote has taken place are not part of the contract.  The original language as signed off by the parties is the only valid and binding contract between the parties.  A later version with language added after the ratification vote is not a valid contract but it does NOT invalidate the original contract that was ratified by the NFLPA rank and file vote and accepted by the league owners.  The foregoing would also apply to secret documents or agreements made between the parties but not made a direct part of the contract.  If people believe that they can enforce post ratification changes or invalidate the original contract language, they are dreaming.  If the NFLPA provided inaccurate materials or falsified information to their members for consideration during their vote, the union could be facing future charges for violation of the National Labor Relations Act.  Attorneys involved in this type of action will likely have problems with their respective bar associations.  Without seeing the exact documents and having all of the details, it is difficult to know how valid any of these claims are.  But I can say with certainty, this all reeks of incompetency within the NFLPA.  Attorneys will smell blood, drag this into court, prolong the arguments over this, and burn up millions of dollars.  Television contracts will not likely be negotiated if this issue is still hanging out there.

Indications are growing that this is a seasonal virus.  If that's the case, teams may go to camp and perhaps get in some exhibition games.  Come the cooler weather, if the virus starts spiking, all bets are off about there being anything resembling a meaningful season.  With no vaccine available until next year, I don't believe there will be football, except for possibly a few games, this season.  If the league and owners can figure out a way to virtualize games with no one in attendance, that's another story.  However, when a few players become ill, that will end it.

Thank you Nostradamus!  How about my investment portfolio?  Any absolute insight on that?.....lol

  5. I don't think you started a dumb post.  It's good to think about the situation facing Beane so that we understand his options and don't bounce off the walls crazy when he adds a particular RB in the draft.

In recent years, coaches have come to recognize that it is highly improbable that a single RB will hold up physically to the full season long load of a typical NFL offense.  They also recognize that the second guy better be very capable and not just a guy.  The offense can't collapse if one guy is injured. Teams also understand that it is really good if the second guy is not a complete clone of the first guy.  That's why we see teams with a power guy paired with a back that is more elusive.  On the best teams, they make sure that both backs can run routes and catch the ball.

When the team plays against a team that isn't good against a power running game, they lean on the power back.  When they play against a slow or undisciplined defense, the elusive guy may carry most of the load.  I think about the approach of the 49ers, Houston, Cleveland, and Chargers last season.  I'd be okay if Beane creates a talented two back rotation as long as they are effective.  Thanks for starting the discussion.

  6. The wild card in all of this is the Chargers.  They are the team that has the most to lose by not getting one of the top three QB's.  If they believe that a third team plans to select a QB before their pick at six, they may sell the farm to get ahead of Miami.  They will not plan to play an entire season with Tyrod in a new stadium when they are trying to build a fan base.  It's not important what Detroit and Washington are actually planning to do at picks 2 and 3.  It's important what the Chargers believe they are going to do with those picks.  Detroit has a QB recovering from a back injury and Haskins looked lost in his first season.  You can make a reasonable case for either of these teams making a QB selection.  Detroit and the Giants have made it known that they are open to trade back. There are other teams that have less than an ideal long term QB situation.  The Raiders, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, and New England could be long shots to make a move but the Chargers may not want to leave the door open for them either.  I wouldn't be shocked by any of these teams making a move to shuffle the top five draft order.  I will be shocked if nothing happens and the draft order remains unchanged.

  7. I find it hard to believe that the NFL Network can't find former players that could provide better analysis and communicate that analysis in a professional manner.  There are a couple that I think are okay but some are just terrible like Steve Smith.  Fortunately, my TV remote has an off button.

I agree with both of you.  If Allen isn't able to identify the Hot Route and get the ball out to the right receiver in year three, then as much as I like Allen and his physical abilities, then I think we are probably looking at his ceiling right now.

We're not thinking of anything that Allen himself and the coaching staff hasn't already thought of.  If Allen isn't studying game film, watching play after play of these blitzes during this off season to help him better identify the blitz and decide where the ball needs to go quickly, I'd be shocked.

Receivers need to do a better job as well.  On most plays either the slot guy, the TE, or RB has the responsibility to read the blitz and break off his pattern to create the hot route.  When you watch the game film, this did not happen very often.  Singletary and Knox being rookies was probably the main cause.  If Allen and these other guys can make this minor improvement, the big negative plays will be greatly reduced.  Once they show that they can handle this, teams will not blitz as often.

  9. CBS sports continues to be a train wreck.  It is difficult to take their articles and reporting seriously.  They seem to push ridiculous material to generate readership.  I guess that helps them pay the bills.  They may also believe that if any of their craziness ever comes true, that they will become recognized as a credible source of sports reporting.

Hey, I won a mock draft competition on the old Bills board in 2012! I think I got like, two picks right...

That's better than Kiper has done in any year.  Maybe ESPN should drop old Mel and sign you to work their draft.  You'd be an instant folk hero for life on this board.

    other thoughts? I got one...

who cares about betting on a season that may or may not even be played? I'm more worried about my toilet paper supply at this point of the pandemic. and that's really my only other thought. Sorry if I didn't add much content to your thread

As it relates to your TP supply worries, my neighbor has a similar concern.  He has started buying the local newspaper and is stockpiling them as a fall back.  He did comment that the future use is of more value than the information printed therein....can't say that I disagree.....lol

My betting advice is to hit the under heavy on weeks where at least one of the teams has a short week of preparation.

I don't see it as a glaring we must spend our second round pick on the position need. Singletary is a legit lead back and Yeldon is solid depth. I think they have to draft a RB at some point by round 4 or 5 but I put Edge, WR (They desperately need depth there, one injury to Brown or Diggs and the offense is right back to where it was and Brown and Beasley are both over 30, they have to get younger there long term) and CB (Sorry Gaines is a value added camp competition body) as higher more pressing needs that should be addressed in round 2 and 3 over RB.

Couldn't have said it better.  Good RB's are available in free agency and will be available into day three of the draft.

Id be stoked if we got Mims or a player like him, but I am a little skeptical Beane is going to use the first 2 picks in this draft (plus a 5th and 6th and next years 4th) essentially on 2 WR's with Brown and Cole already on the roster.  Wouldn't surprise me to see us take a WR in 3rd or 4th though, but to also use our second feels less probably.  I wont be against it by any means, just not sure I see it as a likely scenario.

I'm with you on this.  Beane may not be convinced that all of these highly regarded WR's will be gone before round four.  I found it interesting that several teams recently signed experienced free agent WR's to some fairly large contracts prior to the draft.  That may be a signal that teams don't think there are many WR's in the draft that will make an immediate impact and plan to pass on them in the early rounds. If it plays out that way, Beane may be able to grab a decent prospect with a later pick. I personally don't see it playing out that way.  Having watched so many of these draft prospects play in college, I believe there are several guys that will be significant rookie contributors.  There could easily be 12 to 16 of the best WR's gone before pick 54.  Having snagged Diggs takes all the stress out of watching this play out.

I am happy to see this.   He is good on those jet sweeps and a good depth receiver just don't count on him to catch corner end zone passes

While I still think Claypool is in play.....this also makes me think our 2nd round pick could be edge or running back

You may be correct.  DE, RB, CB, or even O-line could still be in play at pick 54 based on BPA.  I'm more inclined to believe RB or WR in rounds 3 or 4.

I don't think that the Bills' 2nd and 3rd gets them any higher than pick 10 in round 2.  I also don't expect them to be willing to give up their 3rd to move up.  I could possibly see them trade their 4th to move up in the 3rd (would get them from 22 to about 11 in round 3) or trading up in round 4 giving up their 5th to get from pick 22 to about pick 7 in round 4.

Pretty good analysis on potential draft moves.  Beane has shown a propensity to make his move up in the draft in a couple of steps.  He may use some of his picks in rounds 6 and 7 to move up in round 5 and follow that up with a second move to go up in round 4 using remaining picks from day three.  Given the status of the current roster, I can picture Beane being satisfied having only 4 players drafted this year.  Especially if he was able to move around to get the players that he really wants.

The FA wide receivers still out there will generally be average at best. The questions are now: (1) What particular traits to do they have that will enhance the Bills pass game? Or, (2) do they see the potential for development in a year or two to be a top tier guy? ..... I still see Robert Foster positively answering those questions. Rob was probably not as good as we want to remember in year one, and probably not as bad in year two as it seemed. I seem to recall, he was not a regular starter at Alabama? He is still developing. And, he has that one quality that you can't teach, elite speed. I think he can and will develop, and I think the Bills brass are still counting on that; thus, unless they can get one of these other guys on a cheap prove-it deal, don't expect any more WR signings.

I think you're correct on this.  I also believe that Foster played a good part of the season with a couple of nagging injuries.  Training camp and preseason should tell the story on Foster.  If the Bills draft a speedy WR on day two of the draft, we'll know that Foster will be in a competition to be the 4th receiver.  Even if he loses that competition, he may be able to stick with the team because of special teams.  I don't believe that Beane will spend any more money on a veteran free agent WR.

  16. IMHO the Bills will select a RB in the draft.  I'm not sold on the idea that they are as motivated to pick one as some of us believe them to be.  I keep thinking that Beane will be looking at the BPA in positions DE, OT, CB, RB, and WR in no particular order.  It will depend on how their board is set and which position groups fall in the draft.  As several posts have pointed out there are several decent options at RB and I will be okay with a fair number of them.  Given the state of the roster, I don't see Beane actually making 7 picks.  I believe that he will move around on day two using day three picks to make it happen.  I expect only 4 or 5 at the most to be drafted by the Bills.

  17. Drafting a good WR prospect to develop makes some sense.  Very seldom does a team get through a season without losing at least one of their starting WR's for multiple games.  It becomes essential for playoff caliber teams to have a guy that can fill in and contribute.  In addition, Brown and Beasley don't have an unlimited shelf life and developing a high potential player for the future will be important.  With great depth at WR in this draft, it makes sense to grab one.
