I wondered when the next pointless move Dion Dawkins topic would be created.

He is a decent LT. They are rare in the NFL. End of story.

You couldn't be more correct.  If you read this board, we should have about 6 guys playing guard, a couple of new rookies playing tackle or at a minimum someone's castoff playing right tackle.  People want to point to isolated statistics and make grand proclamations about the team.  The o-line has room to improve, receivers need to get open within the timing of the play, the QB needs to deliver the ball on time, and running backs need to hit the hole and read the blocks.  Watching the Bills last year, those things didn't always happen in unison and the result looked like the o-line didn't perform which was not always the case.  I trust the coaches to have a better grip on this than any of us who are posting on this board.

Clowney's talent is undeniable and to the extent he's not getting sacks, he is freeing up others to do so.  He's an athletic freak.  The issues with Clowney are his injury history and his inconsistent work ethic.  Dating all the way back to his college days, he was spectacular when he turned it on, but seemed disinterested at times.

I agree with your assessment.  The other knock on him is that he is overly susceptible to misdirection and counter plays.  He is quick to move to the play fake, gives up his gap, and gets seal blocked out of the play.  It is his quickness to bite on the first move that makes him so good at defeating non-misdirection plays.  His new team will have to take the good with the bad.  He is more of a free lance player that gets outside the team defense the rest of his team is trying to play.

I don't discount the Jets, but right now they have one capable WR, their OL patchwork has been meh because they struck out on most of their targets, and, well, Adam Gase.

I agree with you.  Their unwise over the top spending on Bell and Moseley have them driving down the road to cap hell.  They have major holes in their roster and ownership that almost seems disinterested in the team.  And then....there's Gase.  How this guy continues to land jobs in the NFL is truly puzzling.  Miami is on a more solid footing.  They have a capable coach that gets the players to play hard for him.  For some reason, they traded away some of the best young established players on their team for draft picks and spent big on (Parker) a guy that has been an underachiever for the vast majority of his career.  The scouting and personnel people in Miami have done a below average job for years.  If they don't turn that around in this draft, they will languish as a below 500 team.

  4. Good thread. BPA is in the eye of the beholder.  Actual team scouting evaluations are never seen by fans or others outside of a team's organization.  The point of this thread is well taken.  When most teams say best player available they probably mean BPA in a general area of need.  The worse a team's roster where they have pressing needs in many areas, the closer the team is to actually selecting BPA.  In addition, teams with very good rosters can afford to be flexible and pick the BPA because they don't have pressing critical needs. Given the current state of the Bills roster, there are really no desperate needs in the roster.  They can afford to make selections closer to a pure BPA approach.  We may all be surprised when Beane makes his selections.  I can hardly wait to read all the posts from people who are apoplectic because he passed on a particular player or position group.  No one can really say that Beane doesn't make the off season interesting and no one should be saying that he isn't effective in the off season either.

Wow. Not understanding the cap management if two players account for $60m. Isn’t this a team sport? ?

Don't underestimate your ability to understand cap management.  Your question is one that Jerry Jones should have been asking before agreeing to this deal. This sure makes the Diggs contract inherited by the Bills look pretty good.  Cooper isn't worth $8m per year more than Diggs and this will force Dallas to release some good talent in the future.

  6. Four years at a little over $11m per year for a player like Diggs is great cap value.  We already know what he can do in the league and we don't have to wait for a rookie to develop. He fits the need at WR perfectly.  Some will complain about the cost of the trade but I believe that Diggs is better than any receiver we could draft at 22.  Beane never ceases to amaze me with his ability to make the right moves to keep improving the team without busting the cap.

I'm hoping that he has an equally impressive result in his efforts to add some pass rush talent.

I think Lynn saw what the ravens did this past season and thinks he can do that with tyrod.

The Chargers probably looking QB at pick 6.  Tyrod may get to start the first few games before handing the job over to the rookie.  Things have also been quiet on Bridgewater.  He could also become a factor in LA.

  8. $30M for Flowers is a joke.  A year ago he had one foot out of the league.  He was moved inside and didn't totally bust but he was not a $10M per year performer.  Let the fins keep

p***ing away their cap.  Byron Jones is a very good corner but $17M per year was probably an over pay because the fins got into a bidding war for him.  Desperation makes a bad front office do bad things.  As a long time Bills fan, I know what that looks like and Miami looks like that now.

My god. It’s like this board is in a time machine back to last offseason only we’ve replaced the jets with the dolphins.

When will the idiots on this board learn?

Exactly, a team over spends for some FA and the "chicken little wanna be's" enter into their sky is falling chorus.  It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

JJ Watt - Texans save $15.5m with 0 dead cap - BOB is silly

Cam Heyward - last year of his deal, saves Pitt $9.5m

Solomon Thomas - end of rookie deal and 49ers just paid Armstead

Joey Bosa - on 5th year option, LA saves $14.36m

Sheldon Rankins - on 5th year option, NO saves $7.69m

    Just spitballing.

Yeah...but educated spitballing.   None of these are completely crazy

Was dimarco there with him.  I think so...if so it could help us lure him.

You could be right.  This is a cap clearing move.  Freeman is a Florida guy.  He could end up in Miami or TB and would be an immediate upgrade to their running game.

Why in creation would Bill O Brien trade him. Imo he’s the best player on their team.

I'm with you.  He is their best offensive weapon, is a great guy, and is not a problem for them in any way.  Their QB is hitting his prime years and keeping play makers around him should be a high priority.  Sometimes threads like this one or similar crazy stories from sports writers seem like a waste of everyone's time and energy.

I’ll make a guess that it will be DT D.J. Reader and before the FA frenzy quiets down RB Jordan Howard will be a Bill as well. Any and all predictions are welcomed so take a shot of who will be the 1st FA signing for the Bills.

I think both of your predictions make a lot of sense.  I also believe that both would provide a significant upgrade over the players that they are replacing.  They also bring talent in the area that McD values.  He wants a strong and deep D-line and he wants to have a power running game to protect leads at the end of games. There was a time when I thought that Carlos Hyde could be a target for Beane but when he refused a significant offer from Houston I realized that he had just priced himself out of consideration from Beane.

What I have heard over the years is that Wilson traded Lamonica because he had an affair with another player's wife.  I don't how true that was but it seems consistent with how Wilson ran the team.

I think that Lamonica would have failed in Buffalo.  The loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship (for the berth in Super Bowl I) was the Bills' last hurrah and ushered in 2 decades of misery for Bills fans which were only broken by Lou Saban's short lived return as coach (1972-the first 5 games of 1976) and the Chuck Knox regime (1978-1982)  until Bill Polian took charge of the Bills in 1986.  Between 1967 and 1985, the Bills were mostly uncompetitive with the rest of the NFL.  Wilson didn't like paying top money for quality players, so the Bills drafted primarily based either position (lots of DBs in the first round) or whether a draftee would accept the Bills' low ball salary offers in the first round.  In the 20 years between 1967 and 1986, the Bills had the #1 pick in the entire draft 4 times (OJ Simpson (1968), Walt Putulski (1972), Tom Cousineau (1979), and Bruce Smith (1985)), 3 top 5 picks, and 2 top ten picks.  Simpson and Smith both held out a long time before finally signing with the Bills.  Cousineau chose to play in the CFL rather than for the Bills.  Jim Kelly (the only QB taken in the first round during this period) chose the WFL over the Bills.

Knowing a person who worked for the team at the time, I was told that Lamonica had a medical issue that made longevity in the league something less than a sure thing.  I don't know if that is true or not but it makes more sense than unloading your talented QB of the future because he shagged someones wife. There were multiple rumors about affairs and who knows if any of them were true.

Is it to simplified a take to say that the big money boys don't like it and the rank and file are going to benefit?

Based on who has been openly opposed to the proposed contract, I'd say you have drawn the correct conclusion.  The big money guys don't benefit as much on a percentage basis as the low end roster guys.  For example, a playoff game check for a big money guy is almost irrelevant.  Yet for a guy making the league minimum, it's a good bump in annual income.  Thus a couple of extra playoff teams get more players some meaningful additional income.

not at the cost of a number one pick;  I don't see the Bills drafting a WR at 22 either unless one of the top 3 guys falls to them...

I agree.  With Murphy being Murphy and Lawson headed to the free agent market, I believe a DE will be on Beane's wish list.  One of the top four DE's should be available at 22 and be a decent value there.  I also wouldn't be surprised, if they bring in one of the second tier free agents as well.  A really good WR will be available in round two with or without a move up.  As others have pointed out, RB is probably down their list of priorities unless a really great prospect falls really far in the draft.

  17. 41 minutes ago, Kirby Jackson said:

How about Carlos Hyde or Lamar Miller? Either one of them would be an improvement over Gore at this point. You’d still probably draft a guy but I think either would quietly be nice additions.

Not bad options.  Hyde just rejected a contract offer from Houston and may be looking for more than Beane will be willing to pay. Both of these guys are more than capable.

Do the meetings, but via Skype. I think what you miss are the physicals by the team doctors and the private workouts

If teams really want to conduct physical exams, they can always move either the players or the doctors around on private jets.  This isn't as difficult as some people may think.  I have always thought the private workouts were a little over the top.  Between game tape, the combine, and college pro-days; teams should have enough input to make a decision.
