  1. Chan Gailey was an amateur compared to Teddy M. and the K-gun.  Thurman Thomas was a master at slipping out of pass protection and catching screen passes. Thurman in the open field was beyond dangerous.  It also helped that a great o-line executed the sell of pass blocking effectively..........and by the way there was some hall of fame guy delivering the ball with perfect timing and location.  A more subtle aspect of effective screen passes is the ability of wide receivers to run secondary defenders off the line of scrimmage or block them out of the play.  Andre Reed was exceptionally good at this. The schemes for screen passes are not as important as the deception and execution.  The best scheme in the league that is poorly executed won't work any better than an average scheme that is poorly executed.  Having the o-line returning intact for this season should allow them to improve on the finesse required to run effective screens.  Josh Allen needs to improve the timing and ball location.  Allen had a tendency to give the play away with his eyes and have poor ball location.  Both of these things are easy to fix.

For Daboll, knowing when to call a screen is a big deal.  Third and long is not the best time unless you're looking to pick up a few yards to help the punter and field position.  Second and short yardage is a great time because defenses will typically expect teams to take a shot deeper down field.  It is also a good call in situations for which your opponent is known to blitz.  Daboll can do a better job of picking the time to run them.

Brady was terrible last year and the Bills still lost to them twice.  Don't get me wrong.  Their dynasty was 80% Brady and 20% Belichick.  But until McD proves he can beat the Patriots they are still in the conversation.

I think in the end they will sign Cam Newton and challenge the Bills well into December for the division title.  Bills have a very difficult schedule but so do the Patriots.

Newton would have to play for almost the veteran minimum to fit into the Cheatriots cap space.  Cam will have other offers and for money that NE can't pay.  IMHO, things won't happen for Newton until after the draft and when players can travel for physicals.

  3. When I get bored, I look at some of the Jest's fan sites.  Their fans that haven't consumed the Kool-aid, have gone off the deep end.  Every time something bad surfaces, they erupt with over the top negative reactions.  Shortly thereafter, the Kool-aid drinkers rip the non-drinkers a new one and claim the front office knows what they are doing.  It is all pretty entertaining.  Teams knew that Adams was a bit of a problem before the draft.  The Jest's took a chance and we see how it is working out for them.  I can't blame Adams for wanting to win or make more money but IMHO his contributions on the field aren't worth the drama.

I think their roster is a decent one, it's their future that is bleak. They're pressed to the cap, have no future draft assets, have more big contracts coming up, and have a lack of depth and talent across the map. They're top heavy to the extreme and we've already seen them have to dump guys to adjust. Trading what they did for Ramsey was completely idiotic I think.

Plus, they're going to be held back by their QB and his giant contract going forward.

You couldn't have been more on point on this.  They did a bunch of stupid things to take a run at the Super Bowl.  IMHO they had been on a decent trajectory to be competitive and then they tried to jump the timeline.  As you clearly laid out, they have a screwed up roster and are in cap hell.  I can't imagine that the owner can be happy about opening a new stadium with a team that may finish fourth in their division...........and the little genius believes that the Rams are in better shape than the Bills.

I think the only way there is not a season is if we fall foul to the second peak ie. we relax measures too soon and suddenly infections shoot up again. If we get the timing right on that then by September I expect there to be a season. Whether there is any pre-season / camp and whether there are full stadiums is a question mark. I can see stadium attendances being at the very least capped. Every game will look like a Chargers home game. :D

I agree.  By September, there will be significant confidence in the treatments for people who contract the virus.  It is also becoming more evident that specific pre-existing conditions create the most severe threat to people that contract the virus.  Hopefully by then, people with those conditions will be informed enough to avoid situations that could harm them.  Lastly, there is too much money and fan driven desire for there not to be a football season.  How would you like to be a politician that prevents fans from having an NFL season?

Lot of money for a running back. Even one who gives such good value as a receiver.

Looks like the lower cost 2 year contract for Bridgewater gives them some wiggle room to pay CMC this big money.  The fact that the contract extension happened after they locked up Bridgewater speaks volumes. Carolina will likely add a rookie QB at some time either this year or next.  A cheap rookie QB contract would extend the window to pay CMC through the balance of the four years.  After that time, the wear and tear will probably make CMC expendable.  When you look at this, it is really a pretty sound approach.

The 20- 60 range is never as clear as people make it out to be. He seems like he’ll be hard pressed to last past 40, but he does fall in a group of CB’s that could all move around some after Okudah and Henderson.

What you pointed out is exactly correct.  Teams with GM's and Head Coaches that are on the hot seat often draft for a specific need regardless if there are better players available at other positions.  It is more pronounced in each successive round.  In addition, once the draft moves past the 15 to 17 players with first round grades/talent, there is less difference between players.  This creates a lot of variation in the way different teams look at any player in this range.  All of this makes predictions of future draft selections beyond the first half of the first round nothing more than a wild guess.  Finally, there is the total incompetence factor.  Some teams are so totally and historically bad in the draft, they introduce a completely unpredictable element into the draft.  All of this is why we will hear once again that a so-called good player fell n the draft.  We shouldn't be surprised; it's inevitable.  Trevon Diggs could very easily fall to the Bills at 54 or he could just as easily be selected much higher.  We'll know for sure in less than two weeks.

Sure he had a crazy year last season, but he has 20k yards and 121 TDs in 70 starts.  In the NFL, that's a starting QB easily.

It's the fumbles, interceptions, and off the field stupidity that cost him his job and makes other teams uninterested in him.  When his supporters quote his stats, they need to look at the whole picture.  Turnovers lose games and Jameis cost his team a ton of games.  His four year history has him without a job.  Teams know who he is and what type of player he is.  He is certainly better than many backup QB's and can have a long career if he chooses to take that kind of job.

How is this different from any other day?

Not to be ‘that guy’, but what criteria/how is this title achieved? Simply fortunate we didn’t suffer crippling injuries? No amount of training/weight room/hyperbolic chamber visits can fix ACL’s, rotator cuffs of broken limbs.

    just askin’

Probably the low number of soft tissue injuries like hamstrings, quads, core muscle , etc...   He was also responsible for rehab and recovery time for the injuries that did occur.

I was there and the jets game (just as cold) the week before. The beer in our cups turned to slushees.

I was at both of the games also.  A guy and his wife from LA had seats beside me.  They left before the first quarter was half over.  People in our row had a good laugh at their expense.  I remember Bruce out there for pregame warm up in a tee shirt. I think it freaked the Raiders out.  Many people at both games were able to smuggle cans of beer into the stadium because of all of the layers of heavy clothing.  I also remember that taking a leak wearing multiple layers was a pain.  Great time and great memories.

Ah, this boards logic.  Whaley gets no credit for good moves. Only the bad ones.

Whaley was a train wreck from day one.  He didn't miss on every move but he missed on enough to show everyone in the league that he was not a capable GM.  He had apparently functioned well in lesser positions in personnel departments but was unfortunately promoted to a level for which he was incapable or unprepared or both. He was not a bad guy, in fact he had a reputation for being a very good person. I believe he felt a desperate need to turn things around fast and took some gambles that didn't pay off.  On more than one occasion, he apparently disregarded advice from the scouting department and made moves on some players that turned out poorly.  I think he felt that he had better skill at evaluating players than long term scouts that had been part of Buffalo's long standing struggles.  I for one am happy to move on and not dwell on past failures.  I think Karlos Williams should look in a mirror to find the guy to criticize and leave Doug Whaley alone.

I'm really curious to see what the Packers end up doing. I think Michael Pittman is a really good fit for them, though people that are not me would probably say that's too early for him. I think he checks all of the boxes the Packers and LaFleur are generally looking for though.

I agree with you.  He's a faster version of a young Randall Cobb.  He's a versatile player that can play in the slot or outside.  He can go deep and is a good YAC guy on shorter routes.  I don't expect him to be around at pick 54 but he would be a great value there.  I'm not sure that Beane will be locked into any particular position on day two.  He'll be looking for value that will improve the roster.  IMHO he'll be looking for guys that fall and for whom he has a higher draft grade than where they are available.  In the past, this has prompted him to trade up.

Good post but didn’t we just acquire Diggs, who had full on temper tantrums during wins?  Also Brady has screamed at his coaches on the sidelines on camera. Marino would turn red screaming at his teammates and coaches.  I’m telling you. Cam gets treated a lot different than most qbs.  His outfits are stupid and sometimes he lets his emotions get away.  But I’ve heard nothing but good things about him as a leader in the lockerroom.

2 years ago, he was completing 67% of his passes and was in the MVP conversation.  Then he hurt his shoulder.  The only reason he isn’t signed is because team’s doctors can’t check them out themselves.  Also, the Panthers completely screwed him by releasing when they did.  Maybe the Bears sign him instead of trading for a way more expensive and less talented Foles.  Either way, I hope is healthy and gets a chance to start next year.  I think he has a lot to prove.

He may end up in Jacksonville after the draft and when the travel ban is lifted.  Most people think it will be the Chargers but they are in position to get one of the top three QB's in the draft.  They will use Tyrod until the new guy is ready.  Jacksonville is not in position to get one of the top guys and has many holes to fill in the draft.  They have a coaching staff that is hanging on by a thread and Minshew will likely get them all fired.  In addition, for a team that has trouble selling seats (I know because I've been to several games there) think of the draw that Newton would be for them. In addition, they were able to get out of the terrible Foles contract and free up cap money to get a better QB on the roster. Newton would probably see it as an opportunity to get back at Carolina twice a season. It makes too much sense for it not to happen.  If Carolina hadn't stuck it to him, the Bears or Raiders could have been logical landing spots.  If none of this plays out, a healthy Newton will be the first guy sought out when a good team loses their starting QB.

Where are the reports of coaches and players saying one negative thing about Cam in the lockerroom?  We also traded for Benjamin who was a fat loser in Carolina.

The Majority of the people who have the most problem with Newton are grumpy (normally older) fans who think Rivers trash talking is a good ol’ boy having fun and when Newton does it, he’s a problem in the lockerroom.

he isn’t coming here and he shouldn’t.  He’s too good to be a backup for Allen.  I just hope he’s healthy and gets to shut people up.  I’ve never seen a good qb take as much crap as he does.

Go back and watch some of Newton's antics on the sidelines when things weren't going his way or maybe some of his press conference performances after losses.  Hardly the actions of a positive leader.  It always seemed that Newton was constantly striving to make everything be about him.  There is a reason that Carolina let him walk and it was more than just injuries.  If you were a GM of a team and knew you had a player as good as Cam Newton had been, wouldn't you give him the chance to completely recover from his surgeries before deciding to cut him loose?  Wouldn't you want to see how he looked in training camp before deciding you were through with him?  Wouldn't you want to show other teams that he was still a very capable player so you could create some trade value?  Carolina didn't because they decided he wasn't worth the time, money or the effort of the organization and they didn't want him around.  It almost seemed to me that Cam's late release was done vindictively, indicating to me that they were unhappy with him.  All of the decent signing opportunities and pay opportunities were filled.  That isn't the way organizations part company with a player on good terms.  Carolina really stuck it to him.

I for one have never had a problem with Newton talking trash or doing his Superman thing.  In fact when I think of the big trash talkers in the league, Newton doesn't even come to mind.  Since you brought it up, Rivers talking trash is pathetic.  With his level of poor on field play, he shouldn't be talking trash to anyone.

As far as Newton being a problem in a Bills locker room, I believe it would be inevitable.  Newton has a diva type personality.  Beane has shown through the players that he has drafted or signed that he doesn't want that kind of influence on the team.  He has stacked the roster with players that go about their jobs without a lot of fanfare and act professionally.

I believe Newton will be starting games before the end of the season.  It will probably take a season ending injury to a QB on a team that has a chance to make the playoffs.  When that happens, he'll probably be the first guy that is sought out.  I also expect that he will play well as long as he is healthy.

Am I not seeing something? I keep seeing people are wanting us to go WR first/second pick in this years draft. Why? We now have a stud WR1, an excellent WR2 and an excellent slot. All of these guys are under contract for the next 3+ years as well.

So people want us to use our 2nd rounder or 3rd to draft a backup WR that will hardly see the field or they are expecting one of these three to be cut in the near future(I'd like to hear which one lol).

Please someone shed some light on the matter.

Very seldom do teams go through an entire season without having receivers injured and missing games.  Good teams have a 4th WR that can play at a high level.  Buffalo does not have that kind of 4th WR.  Beasley and Brown are both 30 years old and are not the answer to the long term needs of a consistently competitive team.  With this being a very deep draft with really good talented players, it may be the only opportunity for a long time to draft a player with first round skills with a day two pick.  When you combine all of this with the fact that there really aren't any glaring holes in the roster, it's easy to see why the Bills go WR on day two, if they choose to do that.

Good question.  I remember reading something about this a few years ago.  I think they discuss diagrammed plays and question players about the appropriate reads and adjustments to determine their knowledge of the game.  They also ask things to try to determine personality traits and patterns of behavior.  They are also looking to determine the ability to learn quickly and to communicate effectively.  In general, they are trying to make sure the guy is not a box of rocks and/or a pain in the rear end.

  17. The best way to get Gilmore off his game is to make him come up and play the run early and often.  He does not like heavy contact and has a tendency to back off after taking some hits.  He did this in Buffalo and he has done it at times in NE.  He is a good player but has shown that he can be beat.  I can't wait to see real game action with Gilmore and Diggs on the field.

  18. 2 hours ago, Sherlock Holmes said:

I know he isn't a rookie but Kupp is the WR I really see being able to compete with and surpass Diggs

He's a really good player but benefited from Cooks and Woods pulling a lot of the coverage.  He seldom faces the top corner from the opposition and works primarily out of the slot.  He isn't the same type of player as Diggs.  Kupp isn't a guy that can stretch the field or command double coverage.  Comparing him to Diggs is like comparing apples and oranges.  Even with all of that said, I'd be really excited if the Bills could add a player like Kupp to the roster.  He doesn't drop passes, blocks in the run game, and makes good plays with the ball in his hands.
