You don't realize that the MLB draft means little, especially being picked 9th.  It's all based on potential.

Here are the #9 picks of the prior 10 drafts:

2008- Aaron Crow, P,  Washington- didn't sign, 12th pick in 2009 draft by KC, 20-11 MLB record, now playing in Mexico

2009- Jacob Turner, P, Detroit- . 14-31 record in MLB, now playing in Korea

2010-  Karsten Whitson, P, SD- didn't sign out of HS, 11th rnd pick in 2014 draft by Boston, only made it to A ball

2011-  Javier Baez, INF, Cubs, All Star in 2018!

2012-  Andrew Heaney, P, Miami-  16-20 MLB record, Full time SP for Angels in 2018

2013-  Austin Meadows, OF, Pitts-  PART-time OF for Tampa in 2018, 5 HR, 16 RBI in MLB

2014-  Jeff Hoffman, P, Toronto- . 6-9 MLB record, spent most of 2018 in AAA

2015- Ian Happ, OF, CUBS- solid utility player

2016- Matt Manning, P, Detroit- only A ball to date

    2017-

And sign ability and other weird factors. It's crazy that Mike Trout was drafted as late as he was and a lot of it had to do with the fact that he played in cold weather. Freaking crazy crap shoot.

It's how things are now. Parents going to college interviews with kids, sending complaint letters when they don't get in. And many young people can't even look another person in the eye and answer a question. It's the parents fault a lot of the time becuase they don't allow their children to take ownership or responsibility for their own lives.

This is my sense with him too. He has a reputation as a very hard worker, and you know McBeane loves that, but the tape on those two games particularly doesn't lie. He struggled against premier defensive ends in college. Being kicked inside could make him a high-level guard and that is a definite need, just not one I'd like to see filled with a top 10 pick.

Agreed. I think he would make for an almost elite center, because of his smarts, leadership ability, and quick feet. But I do think he is a bottom half of the first talent and teh top ten feels like a massive reach for need. .

  4. Williams looked over matched against Clemson and Georgia teh year before. He's look terrible against NFL caliber defensive players. His sets and footwork look smooth and such and he is very smart, but he is not an elite talent. I think he is destined for a move inside and I see a lot of similarities in his game to that of Luke Joeckel. The team that drafts him in the top ten will be very disappointed.

  5. I though the refs were okay. I thought they allowed a few late hits on Goff, he was getting smashed. But I like when the refs let them play, and for the most part they did. I usually get mad when the Pats win, and while I was disappointed, the Rams did not deserve to win the game. Super vanilla, no Gurley, not aggressive, and Goff was overwhelmed. They should have used Dante Fowler more as well because he was getting some pressure there. Hate the Pats, but the Rams did not deserve to win. They laid an egg. Saints should have been in the game anyway.

  6. Couple of side notes on Dorsey.

He served as Derek Anderson's backup in Cleveland playing for Romeo Crennel (so he kind of sort of falls in the Belichick tree).

He's a a disciple of Mike Shula, who has had his ups and downs. What stands out to me though is that Shula is an Erhardt-Perkins guy through and through. Hell, Shula played for Ray Perkins at Alabama back in the 80s. The positive here is that Dorsey is going to be on the same page with Daboll and will be speaking the same language.

I also like like the fact that he's worked as a pro scout and in college athletics, as well as IMG academy. He has a ton of experience that makes him pretty well rounded for such a young guy.

  7. I really like the Dorsey hire. He was a guy who hung around the NFL awhile and was somewhat serviceable with pretty much no talent. Similar to a guy like Kellen Moore, dudes like that have to anticipate and use every resource in their bodies to push the ball. That's the kind of guy I want coaching JA. A guy who knows how to make use of every inch of his talent. No brainer hire.

I said this somewhere else, but Hall is likely the guy who needs to be credited with the development of Robert Foster. RF made gains while on the practice squad, where he would have been coached by Hall. I'm good with it. Again a guy who made it in the league despite being tiny and having little talent.

The word on him is he doesn't have a killer instinct and he takes plays off. It's the two worst traits you can have for an OL. I'd rather Jawaan Taylor. Wasn't high on him until I did some research. He's going to be the better player.

Yep I like Taylor a lot. I love his upside and he is already a better player imo.  I still don't think we should draft any OL in the top ten this draft.

  9. I still say Chudzinski would be the best hire. He hasn't been a quarterbacks coach specifically, but he's been an OC and a head coach and he is a smart guy who gets along with McDermott. The other obvious one is Ken Dorsey. Morningwheh is a tried and true west coast system guy.

Other names outside the box a bit who are E-P guys:

Todd Haley. Super abrasive, but a guy who would likely get the best out of Josh Allen. I think he hates lazy people. He will love Josh Allen and I think he would bring a little edge to the staff.

Chan Gailey. Another E-P guy who is old, but is a really great offensive mind.

Jim Zorn, again an older guy, but he's got a ton of experience and worked under Daboll in Kansas City.

Those last three guys are bit older, so is Chud, but I actually like the idea of an older guy with a ton of experience coaching up Josh. I might be in the minority there, but we don't necessarily need a young, innovative mind, we need a guy who is going to push Josh and get the best out of him.

  10. I really like Michael Brockers and I think he would make for a nice 3 tech in our defense. I would also take on Allen Robinson. Bears save a ton of cap if they can trade him pre 3/15, so perhaps they would give him away in exchange for another team taking on the hit. Robinson is still somehow only 25 years old.

I'd offer those teams late round picks to give them a chance at extra cap savings with a trade pre 3/15 rather than a release.

    The two favorites:

    Ken Dorsey

    Connections to McDermott/Beane

    Young

    Former QB

App State assistant so it won't be too hard to pry him away

    Jim Bob Cooter

Was Offensive Quality Control under Daboll in 2012 with the Chiefs

    Young

    Former QB

    Experienced

Both make a ton of sense. I threw Rob Chudzinski's name out there in the Palmer thread as a guy with McDermott connections who was good for Cam Newton. I really like the idea of Dorsey. I think he'd be a great fit with Josh Allen.

Saffold could certainly re-sign.  The guard that's almost certain to hit the market is Foster, and I think he'd be a great target for lesser money.

The position I think will be the toughest to fill is center; have to figure Paradis re-signs in Denver, which means it's basically down to Morse as the only established starter on the market.  I almost wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to take a shot at a RFA like Boehm or Finney, knowing that Bodine would be the team's worst-case scenario as a starter.

Overpay.  Do it.  In 2 years, it won't look like overpaying...plus, this team has very few (if any) players that will need big-money deals in the next 2 offseasons.

I think Saffold definitely resigns. He's even said he'd give a hometown discount to stay. He's played on awful Rams teams and spent his whole career there. He's made some money as well. I don't think he leaves now that they are actually good.

In terms of centers, there are two teams in dire need of a center who have a ton of cap space, and that's us and the Jets. Now that Munchak is the line coach in Denver, I don't think Paradis goes back. Munchak is an old school power line guy and Paradis is an undersized zone center. I think Adam Gase will be all over Paradis. In fact, he replaced Pouncey with Daniel Kilgore, and undersized zone center. That said, I think we wind up with Morse. There is a strong KC connection with McDermott. I don't think KC can afford to sign him back as they have Tyreek Hill coming up and Dee Ford as a free agent. I believe KC has been preparing for this loss by giving contract extensions to Austin Reiter and Cam Erving. I think Morse and Daryl Williams will be our #1 targets in free agency. Now Morse is from Texas...maybe he decides he wants to go to Houston (they also need a center) but they can't compete cap wise.

I agree with you though. Overpay for Morse and Williams and your line is effectivetly fixed. With upgrades like that you can stick with Teller and Boettger at guard as the veterans around them will make them so much better.

  13. I think it is hard to find good centers. I think the turnover has less to do with injury and more to do with the fact that the good ones are hard to find. The really excellent ones, Mack, Kelce, Unger guys like that, are still going and have long careers. You can find serviceable centers like Russell Bodine anywhere. They simply don't get long contracts and then teams draft a new one. The talented ones stick around because teams commit to them.

  14. I liked Glowinski, but it's all good. I think Quinton Spain, AJ Cann, even and older guy like Matt Slauson would be huge upgrades.

Center and right tackle upgrades would go a long way towards improving the guards. If we somehow signed Mitch Morse and Darryl Williams, I really wouldn't mind rolling with Wyatt Teller and Ike Boettger.

If you plan on drafting a rookie RT, probably need a veteran RG to put him next to. A rookie center should be surrounded by more veteran players.

Lot's of ways to upgrade the offensive line.

  15. I think tight ends are really difficult to project. The way tight ends are used in college is a little different these days as a lot of them really can't block. Why is it that Zach Ertz is so amazing but guys like Gavin Escobar or Troy Niklas flame out?

It really is about fit in a system and how the tight end is going to be used. And talent of course. So I think a tight end in the top ten is a very risky proposition, because it really is a boom or bust pick, like Eric Ebron. However, there is a ton of value that can be found late first round, early second.

With all of that said, TJ Hockenson is the real deal. Would I take him at 9? Not sure yet, but if we are going to make him a focal point of our offense, then I'd be all for it. I think you have to find the right fit and then make a concentrated effort to make the guy a main part of your offense, like KC and Philly have done with Kelce and Ertz.

And BTW, the history of top ten offensive lineman over the past few years is way worse than the history of tight ends on the first two days of the draft. People continue to reach on mediocre offensive linemen, passing on elite talent. Don't do it. No elite offensive lineman in this draft.

  16. Paradis and Mitch Morse are going to be the main attractions. The other guy, coming off of injury is Nick Easton. He is better than Bodine, but a notch below those other guys.

I think the best centers in the draft aren't actually centers, and that's Jonah Williams and Dalton Risner. They are both projections, but I think they could both be elite centers, especially Williams. I like Deiter too.

You definitely kepe Bodine for depth. And I would be okay with him as a starter if they upgraded the guards. Like say they miss out on Paradis and Morse and instead sign Spain and Glowinski, well now Bodine will be more serviceable because he is surrounded by better players.

I think the best thing for Josh Allen is a veteran center. If you watched KC closely this year, Morse and Mahomes had a ton of communication and I think Morse was clearly not the issue in pass protections. They are going to be hurting for cap space, so I do think he will shake free.

Paradis seemed like a guy that would re-sign with the Broncos, but now I think maybe he goes elsewhere. He is a smallish zone center, perfect for teh Kubiaks and Shanahans of the world. I don't think he is a Mike Munchak type of center. I could see Paradis going to Arizona or Minnesota. If he follows Kubiak, I might make a call to the Vikings about the availability of Pat Elflein, who is not a great zone fit as a guy who is solid, but lacks quickness.

But my #1A plan is to sign Mitch Morse. He's a great fit and very scheme versatile. He's a leader, and he is a great communicator on the line. He's my favorite player in free agency. I don't love Paradis because I think he is a zone only center, and I hope Daboll goes to more of a power running scheme like we saw with the Patriots this year. If that's the case I try to sign Morse, or attempt a trade for Elflein. I'd be fine with Paradis, but I think Morse should be our focus.

We have lots of the same guys slightly different order (who is D. Brown?) I think the interesting questions are where the ledges are - so I think there is one after the top 4 and then a smaller one after a group that for me includes G. Williams, White, Ferrell, Simmons and Gary. Then I think you get to a group where there are 4 or 5 defenders and 2 or 3 offensive guys just hanging in at the bottom of that tier too.

Yep sounds about right. I can't see us passing on defensive talent for lackluster ofnsive talent. D Brown is the defensive tackle from Auburn Derrick Brown. I think he's right up there with some of those guys. And I also didn't know that he announced hat he's going back to school. So I have to take him off my list. ?‍♂️
