  1. It's funny, I've seen a lot of people saying that Beane inherited a team in "cap hell", but did we have any bad contracts besides Dareus when Beane took over? The next worst contract is probably Charles Clay, and he's still on the team!

The rest of the dead cap is pretty much Beane trading players away (Glenn, Tyrod - note that we had an opt out for TT contract so it's solely on Beane) or injury (Wood).

Beane gave up an awful lot of draft capital to get Allen and Edmunds. How he'll be graded as a GM will depend on how those guys pan out.

His FA signing have not been impressive so far. Trent Murphy looks like a bust (at least we have an out after this season) and Star looks like a disaster. Why pay 2nd tier DT money for a guy that's not even a difference maker? His ceiling looks like place holder/rotational starter. You can do a lot better for a $50,000,000 contract.

  2. Beane traded a lot of established players (Dareus being the only one on a bad contract) and ended up with a lot of draft capital that he spent all of to get Allen and Edmunds. All those trades left a lot of holes on the roster. If Allen and Edmunds pan out and we have a strong 2019 draft / FA then we really could be a contender. If that doesn't work out we're probably looking at a new GM in 2020.

The Loulelei contract in particular is a major red flag to me. Grossly overpaid for a guy just because they knew him from Carolina.

So in other words you manipulated the stats for your narrative

    - Number 1 receivers are targeted a lot

    - 1000 yards is excellent

    - 941 yards is not bad

See how I did that?  I can manipulate stats too

In today's NFL 1,000 yards is expected from a #1 WR. I certainly wouldn't call it "excellent" when 25 guys a year get over 1k receiving yards.

I'm not saying he's bad, but I think the best you can say about him is that he's a low end WR1.

Marrone had an amendment put in his contract once RCW passed away because he wanted to have his own "out" in case new ownership wanted to come in and clean house. He's tried to make himself look like a martyr in saying that the reason he walked was because he demanded raises for everyone on his staff, which was denied. It's also been rumored that he asked for a contract extension, which was also denied. The Pegulas planned on keeping him but didn't have any plans to mess with his current contract or any of his assistant's current contracts. At the time he quit, he had his agent in his ear telling him he was "guaranteed" the Jets HC job. But then he went to interview with them and evidently gave a horrible interview. Rumors I read were that when asked why he left the Bills, he talked in circles and really just didn't have a convincing reason. On top of that, the dude is straight up moody as hell and players would say they'd come off a win and come back to practice the next week and Marrone would be sulking around as if they just got blown out 58-3. Teams usually adapt/adopt the attitude/persona of their leadership and if the leadership is kickin' rocks all day because he couldn't handle a press conference then it's not gonna be a really conducive work environment.

I'll give him some credit for the 9-7 2014 season but I'll give more credit to Jim Schwartz and that defense. And many of the veteran players were over his "old school" style from pretty early on. The dude wanted to run the show like a college program but that stuff doesn't fly with guys who've been around the league for a while. On top of that, he was rigid to his game plans/schemes and either refused to adjust or just couldn't. Someone else mentioned how his boss is now Coughlin and that Marrone should be careful but Coughlin is one of Marrone's idols. I'm sure he's more than happy to let Coughlin run the personnel and follow whatever instruction he wants. Either way, to me, the guy is always gonna be an L-7 Weenie.

The Jets HC job was supposedly his dream job. There were also rumors that the Bills front office called up other teams to blackball Marrone after he did us like that. I can believe it. A rookie head coach that went 9-7 (with a franchise like Buffalo) would be a pretty hot commodity on the open market, and he was only able to land as an offensive line coach.

To the original post, I'd put Marrone higher on the list. I'd also move Lynch way down (probably out of the top 10) and put McGahee up there. Lynch was run out of town by the media/fans and never said anything bad about Buffalo afterwards.

  5. There's going to be a lot of QB's to compare Allen to. Mahomes, Watson, and Rosen are all guys that we could've picked instead of him. Watson was having the best rookie season ever until his injury.

Something that gets glossed over a lot, but the Star Lotulelei contract is absolutely terrible.

I think a lot of people on here are willing to overlook questionable GM decisions because Beane ended the drought. I'm willing to be patient, but there's a lot he could've done differently. Time will tell

I think Graham over Wilson has to be the answer but we should stick to the 1st round or 2 at most. Stars that were drafted later were missed by everyone. Swinging and missing early sets you back. I’ll try to use just 1st rounders vs. other 1st rounders. Also i will try to take guys that made sense at the time. With that being said:

    - Mike Williams over Ed Reed

    - Whitner over Ngata

    - McCargo over Mangold

    - McKelvin over Talib

    - Maybin over Orakpo

    - Spiller over Thomas

    - Dareus over Julio

    - Gilmore over Cox

    - EJ over Hopkins

    - Sammy over Mack

FWIW, we really didn’t pass on a lot of great QBs. We had a shot in 2017 at some good ones but got our guy this year. We will see how that plays out.

That's true, most successful 1st round QB's in the last 15 years were already off the board by the time the Bills picked. Biggest misses: McKelvin at 11th instead of Flacco at 18th.

And for a huge "what if": we traded our 2005 1st rd pick to select Losman in 2004. That 2005 pick ended up being 20 overall, some guy named Aaron Rodgers was still on the board at that time (he was the 24th pick).

In hindsight the Dareus pick really hurts. There's about 5 future HoF'ers we could've realistically picked there.

  7. Such a frustrating game. The Bills could get first downs, but we kept stalling near mid field. 20 first downs on 260 yards (complete lack of chunk plays).

Tyrod was pretty awful, but I'll still say he outplayed Bortles. Bortles had a couple of really easy throws that he threw into the dirt and killed some drives.

Offensive playcalling was so vanilla it made me want to pull my hair out. Defense played great, but it was disappointing that they never adjusted to Bortles scrambling.

  8. As has been mentioned many times the 6-3 abomination against Cleveland is the worst game I've attended. That was the first game I attended where I could legally drink, and I decided to be all responsible and not get blackout drunk. I still regret that to this day as I vividly remember the 9 false starts by the Bills and winning QB Derek Anderson going 2/17.

    Honorable mentions:

10-3 loss to the 49ers in 2008. The 49ers scored a TD on their first drive and did pretty much nothing for the rest of the game. Bills offense could move the ball consistently, but we consistently blew it on the 49ers side of the field. Lindell doinked 2 FG's off the uprights. Rainy, cold weather and the realization that we would be extending the drought after starting the year 5-1 made for a thoroughly depressing game.

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=281130002

15-10 loss to the Dolphins in 2010 (home opener). Both teams sucked. Trentative was at his worst. He threw a checkdown on 4th down with <10 seconds left in the game and the Bills down by 5. Needless to say we didn't convert that 4th down and the Dolphins knelt to end the game.

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=300912002

47-10 loss to the Saints in 2017. I remember sitting there at halftime thinking we're "only" down 17-3 if we get a defensive stop and score a TD on our first possession of the 2nd half we're right back in this. The 10 play 94 yard drive where the Saints ran the ball all 10 plays and ended it with a 7 yard Drew Brees rushing TD was probably the worst defensive effort I have ever seen from the Bills.

There are (sadly) many other awful games to chose from. Those are just the one's that I've personally attended.

Difference being that Elliot was suspended for breaking the rules of play. Not code of conduct.

If they try to suspend him for breaking the code of conduct, without any evidence that he did, he will sue them.

I'm baffled. What is the "rules of play"? Everything I've read said Elliott broke the NFL's code of conduct. Including this article on NFL.com (emphasis mine).

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000877852/article/ezekiel-elliott-withdraws-appeal-will-serve-suspension

Elliott was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in August following a year-long investigation into domestic violence allegations made by Tiffany Thompson, his former girlfriend. The league concluded he violated its personal conduct policy, which mandates a six-game suspension for first-time domestic violence violations. Elliott, 22, was never charged and has denied wrongdoing.

Again. That was proven in a court of law.   As I 1st posted in response to you, it would have to be proven that McCoy orchestrated the attack on her. Absent that, there is nothing to suspend him for.  What are you missing?

I think you're missing the fact that Ezekiell Elliott was suspended for 6 games even though he never even faced criminal charges, let alone a conviction.

If this story drags out and causes a black eye for the NFL then Shady will 100% be suspended. Regardless if he faces criminal charges or not.

  11. 1 minute ago, 26CornerBlitz said:

Both were directly involved in some capacity.  This is different with McCoy not being on the scene.  Apples to oranges.

I guess by your definition Rae Carruth wasn't "directly involved" in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend? He wasn't directly on the scene after all

  12. Just now, 26CornerBlitz said:

Nonsense.  He wasn't on the scene to attack her and the only way they have anything on him is if they prove he orchestrated the attack.

Ezekiel Elliot was never criminally charged and was still suspended for 6 games.  Adrian Peterson was out an entire year because he took a switch to his kid (pretty minor criminal charges).

  13. Mccoy doesn't need to be guilty (or even charged) to be suspended by the league. If they deem Shady is hurting their public image they can suspend him for any number of games under the personal conduct policy.

I think the only way he can avoid a suspension is if this story is resolved very quickly (payoff). Worst case if Shady ordered a posse member to rob and pistol whip this girl it's probably the end of his career.

  14. It's hard to know what type of value you can get in a trade for a player in the NFL. The value of a player can fluctuate pretty wildly.

Marshawn Lynch was traded for a 4th round pick. So was Bryce Brown.

Tyrod Taylor (who the Bills were almost guaranteed to cut) was traded for a 3rd pick. AJ Mcarron (who was reportedly going for a 2nd+3rd rd pick before the Browns deadline snafu) walked as a UFA. Jimmy G was traded for a 2nd round pick.

Generally I would say Beane has done well on trades. I would have rather kept Ragland and Dareus (especially Ragland), but I can see why they were traded. Keep in mind with Dareus that we are still on the hook for about 14mil in dead cap in the 2018-2019 season and that his original contract had a potential out after that season ended. Trading him netted us a 5th round pick and about 2mil of cap space in the 2018-2019 season.

Sure have guaranteed contracts so players could get Planters Fakeitis and collect for salary for free and they ALREADY do that without guaranteed contract.  I am sure no player will reveal an offseason injury, say tripping over the dog going to door to get pizza, and just wait to training camp where it will  magically appear.

The other major sports leagues have guaranteed contracts and that doesn't seem to be a problem there.

But he was going to start right off the bus. I recall that comment

IMO they expected him to start and play the season.
IMO that was silly considering what was seemingly known by other head Coaches.
Not a fan of Adolphus Washington either. Both heavy Rex influenced picks IMO.

    What about Ragland ?

I am sure Whaley was doing his Coaches bidding went it came to draft weekend.

We can only hope both Adolphus and more so Lawson, Shaq , show up big in training camp.

Ragland had a very solid season for the Chiefs after McBeane traded him for a hill of beans.

I don't really want to trade Shaq at this point. We'd be selling low on a guy that has a lot of potential (similar to Ragland trade).

  17. I find when people say "overly politically correct" or  "I'm not a racist, but" that almost nothing they say is worthwhile.

That "article" didn't make me change my mind (I'm actually annoyed I went for the bait and clicked on it).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Hue saying that Tyrod will be the starter. Tyrod can be a perfectly acceptable bridge QB for them to start this year while Baker adjusts to the NFL. It's probably the smart thing to do to bring Baker along slowly.

There's also nothing stopping Hue from changing his mind and starting Baker if he looks amazing in training camp/pre-season. Coaches have been known to say things in May that end up differently in September when the season starts...

  18. Did that hit ruin Trent Edwards career? No, No, No, No, and No.

A lot of Bills fans cling to this idea, and it's demonstratively wrong. The best game of Edward's career (vs Chargers) came AFTER that concussion.

Edwards was NEVER good and the 4-0 start to  the 2008 season was born of lucky scheduling. The best record any of those 4 teams had at the end of the 2008 season was 5-11

Letting rookies sit is a myth. If he can't handle the pressure he never will. The world weights the same this year as it will next year. If anything the pressure will get worse as Tyrod puts up ****ty numbers.

Aaron Rodgers comes to mind. Although it is impossible to know what his career would've looked like had he started from day 1 .
