You guys are just unhappy with (1) the loss (whichever loss we're talking about at any particular time), and (2) the frustration over the loss that causes you to want to blame someone.  If McDermott explained exactly what happened in 13 Seconds, people would criticize him for making the wrong choices.  He doesn't explain, so people criticize him for not explaining.  Can't you see that McDermott's right about this?  He's damned if he does, and he's damned if he doesn't, and talking about it only prolongs the focus on the history.  Anything that takes the focus off getting better today is a waste of time.   McDermott owns the past lives with it, and works to get better.  It isn't very satisfying to us, because we'd like to understand more about things that happened, but enhancing our understanding doesn't make the team better.

So do you think that every time after a game where Josh gets in front of media and says “it’s my fault”, “I can’t make that pass”, or “I have to be better for my teammates” Sean thinks he is not helping the team win?  Why does he allow Josh to always fall on the sword but finds that if he did that “it doesn’t help the team win?”

  2. McD will never be close to Reid

McD will never be as good as Spags in playoffs

Allen will never be Mahomes (And we literally game him to Chiefs and then drafted a DB)

Veach is significantly better then Beane

Clark Hunt much better the Terry.

The 4 pillars of elite NFL success Owner, GM, Head Coach, QB is 4-0 Chiefs and some by a super large margin.

  3. This fan base is just so worn out, every year it’s just blind support and hope for so many.  I guess that’s why Pegula feels no pressure to actually win a Super Bowl.  For Terry hope is just as profitable as doing what it takes for Super Bowl level success.

But sure, just run it back the same again and hope we get lucky some year.  Sounds like a good plan.  Go Bills.

Been told over and over on this forum that the offense has been at fault for playoff losses, including last week.  Guess those people probably won't respond in this thread.

It’s the offense fault only in the sense that McD playoff defenses are awful and the singular goal of the offense should be to do whatever it takes to score at least 30 pts.

I'm just curious, who would've been a better hire, putting McDermott aside

Seeing McD just said last week the he was a disciple of Andy Reid, one would have thought a 7 year Reid OC, a Super Bowl winning OC, currently available OC might have gotten at least an interview.  Guess like many things McD is just talk.

  6. I like Lamar and hope he wins.  But are we prepared for all the narratives we will get of Mahomes, Burrow and Lamar all getting to a Super Bowl and 2 of those doing so by beating Josh in divisional round in Buffalo along the way?

Josh then becomes the 4 best QB in his own conference and there will be nothing we could say to really disagree with that.

After he went 4-11-1 and refused to fire his oc.  That's a far cry from anything McD has done.

Everytime this comes up I ask which year did the Bills lose in the playoffs with the better team? There isn't one.

Allen is one of the top 3 qbs in the league.  The Bills have only lost to the other 2 top guys.

At least 1 guy in the thread is being honest.  He hasnt moved past 13 seconds.  I feel everyone who wants him fired is in the same boat.

There must be a lot of new posters here on the board or just blind McD loyalists.  The reasons so many think the chances the McD ever wins a Super Bowl with the Bills are extremely low have been posted with lots of data, statistics and reasons like maybe 100 times.  Literally.  There has also been EXTENSIVE talk about other examples of coaches being replaced with much better resumes than McD.

If anyone at all cares about a reasoned arguments, whether you agree or not, they are so easy to find on this board in tons of places.  My guess is at this point neither side is changing each others mind.  The reality is the only person whose opinion matters on this topic is Terry, and I don’t get the sense that there is anything McD can do that ever gets him to replace him.

  8. This has been talked about ALOT on this board, so I thought I’ll just put data review out again for those wanting the data.

1). John Madden is the only coach of the 73 Super Bowl coaches in the history of the NFL to have gone longer than McD without making a Super Bowl appearance.  Madden did it in Season 8.

2). Only 11 coaches won their 1st Super Bowl season 7 or later, only 3 (Tom Landry, John Madden, Bill Cowher) did so with their 1st team as Head Coach.  John Madden the only one of these 3 that didn’t at least have a Super Bowl appearance.

3). In fact of the 35 different Super Bowl winning head coaches, 29 of them won their 1st championship within the first 5 seasons.

4). No team has ever started the same QB under the same head coach for more than 5 years and seen that duo win its 1st championship together.

    - These historical stats, along with the current trend the 10 coaches from last 5 Super Bowls of only 1 was defensive coach (Belichick last SB in 2018 season).

    - As of today the coaches of the top 8 Super Bowl favorites are all offensive head coaches.

    - As of today 8 of bottom 10 teams coached by defensive head coaches.

    - As of today this season records of offensive head coaches is 114-88 (.564%), defensive head coaches is 58-90 (.391%)

    Two general questions.

    1. Is there any first time NFL head coach in history who went to their first SuperBowl after 7 seasons with their first team?

I know Cowher both won and lost with Pittsburg, but Cowher lost a SuperBowl within his first 4-5 years as a head coach and then won one.  McDermott is the longest current tenured coach along with Shanahan that has not won a title with their current team.

    2. The posts about Harbaugh, Slownik, Johnson, or Bieniemy being Coach are interesting.

Serious Question: is there a coach out there who you really believe would be available, interested, and capable of taking the Bills to the SuperBowl in the next 3 years?

I ask because I don't see Reid or Tomlin coming here. Sean Payton is new in Denver and also no coach has won a title with two different teams, so McVay and Bellicheat would be out with that historical stat in mind.

Is there a veteran coach out there who would be an upgrade? Otherwise, its McDermott or the less proven.

    Curious about insights.

John Madden is only coach to ever make his 1st Super Bowl appearance beyond season 7.  He did it in Season 8.

    1 hour ago, Thurman#1 said:

Landry. He was in his 12th year coaching Dallas when he won his first SB. And Cowher as you said. Those are two terrific coaches, by the way.

Oh, and by the way, "I know Cowher both won and lost with Pittsburg, but [justification, excuse, justification, excuse] only shows how you want this argument to fall. You can always find a justification for excluding a guy if that's your previous prejudice. But doing so only shows what you want rather than having any real logical force.

There are two: Landry and Cowher.

More, the problem is that the question, when stated that way, automatically acts to exclude guys who proved very very capable of winning Super Bowls.

Tom Coughlin is a good example. Eight years of coaching at Jax and not winning one, though he had some great rosters. Without a year off, he went to the Giants and won one in his fourth year. Did he become a different coach? Nah. Things just came together for him. He was good enough to win in Jax but it's hard to get things to come together sometimes.

So, how many coaches were fired at some point because the team thought they'd never win a Super Bowl, but that turned out to be wrong? Several.

Belichick. George Allen. Vermeil. Pete Carroll. Dungy. Kubiak. Reid.

    That's a squatload.

Tom Landry made his 1st NFL Championship Game appearance(pre Super Bowl) in Season 7.

Again, John Madden is only coach to ever make his 1st Super Bowl appearance beyond season 7.  He did it in Season 8

Let me start by saying I fully expect him to be back. He ain't going anywhere I agree. But just to put a spin on what you said because a message board is a place for debate...

    1. I'll agree that's a good point. But twice we've been bounced by the QB Pegula allegedly wanted (Mahomes) and McDermott talked him out of and another we laid an egg at home. Both those facts have to burn.

    2. This to me is even more reason he should be fired. No, he cannot control injuries. However, 2 of those 3 major injuries were replaced. Lost Jones, got Joseph. Lost Tre, got Rasul. Now, granted All-Pro LBers aren't grown on trees. But when you hire a coach that specializes in one side on the ball, you should count on him being able to do more with less. He hasn't.  And even with what he does have there is still more talent on this defense than on many others that play better. I feel he's actually UNDERACHIEVING with what's left.

3 & 4. I tie these two together. Both Dorsey being on the Bills, being promoted to OC and McDermott taking over at DC are choices that Sean made and/or signed off on. Neither worked. And those 2 choices basically cost the Bills games this year. And those games will ultimately cost the season in all likelihood. This after 3 years of regression.

Those are all VALID reasons that the fans want him gone. We can see the writing on the wall. I've noticed that when it comes to HCs fans usually have the right view point about a season earlier than the owners.

For Pegula, there's more than just "Bye Sean". A choice to fire him basically fires about 50 other people. Coaches, trainers, scouts. And that does, I'm sure play into it for a guy like Terry. He'll bring Sean back feeling he and his people deserve the right to get it right because they did it in 2017. And we will likely be in the market for a new coaching staff next season.

I looks more and more like the Pegulas are more committed to stability and sustainability then to winning a Super Bowl.

  11. My questions:

Does Beane have the authority to fire McDermott?

Would Beane fire McDermott if he had the authority to do so?

Any way Beane would stay within organization without McDermott?

Does Terry ever attend Bills games home or away?

Are any of the Pegulas actually in WNY ever?

We have now lost 6 games all by 6 points or less. If we had those 3 players healthy, what is our record?

We obviously lost the jets game even though they all played. Our other losses after the Jets include:

Jaguars - L (I think they would’ve still lost this game due to the weird circumstances and jet lag)

Patriots - W (even though they didn’t play good until they went no huddle at the end, our defense wouldn’t have let Mac Jones take the lead in that game)

Broncos - W (This could’ve been a dominant game similar to the dolphins game if completely healthy on defense)

Bengals - L (Bengals have our number. Score probably would’ve been the same)

Eagles - W (Bills win this one in overtime. Milano would’ve single handedly won the game for us with a some turnovers and a stop in overtime)

9-3. You can’t lose your starting defensive tackle, all pro linebacker and starting cornerback from a great defensive team and expect them to still be great.

Welcome to the board Mrs. McD.

    Just wait until tomorrow.

He's going all out to defend McDermott tomorrow, you know it.

He will DEFINITELY say “they all need to be better including coaching” but then say the HC doesn’t run the routes, HC doesn’t miss FG and he agrees with defensive TO and knell down.

Bet a lot of $$$$ on it.

That genius response is exactly what I was referring to when I say ‘mentality’.
Firing a coach is an action. A solution is hiring a replacement who is successful-though it may take a a season or two to measure that success. Comprende?

    1) If you have read many of the 50 threads on this topic, including just 3 pages previously on this one, you would have read about several good replacement names.

2). Do we know that those names would for sure 100% be better than Sean, no.  Is it EVER possible to know for sure that who you replace ANY coach with will be better, no.  That can’t and shouldn't ever be the standard for firing any coach.  That’s living scared and not a standard you or anyone else would use in your life.  Do we for example always know if a change in a job, change of where we live, or a change in girlfriend/boyfriend will be better then what we have? No.  But sometimes we know in life something has gotten stale or worse and needs to be changed.

3). Many other teams in NFL and other sports have fired more accomplished coaches than Sean and have immediately maintained or even exceeded the performance under new coach.

Ex 1). John Fox with the 4 seasons with Broncos: 4 winning seasons, 4 playoff appearances, 13-3, 13-3, 12-4 his last 3 seasons, a Super Bowl appearance.  BUT, 3 divisional playoff losses, 3-4 playoff record and fired.  Gary Kubiak hired and won Super Bowl the next season.

Ex 2). Doug Pederson with Eagles:  a .531 winning %, 3 playoff appearances, 4-2 playoff record, a Super Bowl win. BUT, loses in divisional and wild card rounds, and 1 bad season was his last one.  Fired.  Replaced by a little known assistant Nick Sirianni went immediately went to playoffs the next season followed by a Super Bowl appearance.

These type of posts are why I chuckle at this board sometimes when Josh freaking Allen is the problem with this team.
This actually reminds me after his game against Pittsburgh in 2021 when people threw his jersey on the highway after this game.
This fanbase treated Jeff Tuel and Kyle Orton better than they treat this guy.

Joe Marino longs for the days when we where trying to get Kyle Orton out of retirement he often blames Josh for just about everything wrong with this franchise

This fan base literally funded a whole wing of a f**king of hospital for Josh, GMAFB about how he is treated.

You can both appreciative of Josh and also criticize when warranted.  If not your just a fanboy.  Grow up.
